N9 Won't start, 0% Battery - SOLVED

Symptoms:

Plug in USB, semi-dimmed LED comes on solid, and stays on.

Sometimes LED just turns off, sometimes LED flashes, hard on, hard off (pretty sure it's the recharging indicator).

Sometimes pressing the power button works, the LED illuminates as expected, but when it vibrates, it isn't the standard vibration.

No matter what, it doesn't start.

Dualbooting,
No OC.
Flasher can connect to it, (flasher -i), but after a couple of seconds it too will disconnect.

If you have these symptoms, you probably have a completely flat battery.

Running:
flasher -i
Code:

flasher 3.12.1 (Oct 6 2011) Harmattan
WARNING: This tool is intended for professional use only. Using it may result
in permanently damaging your device or losing the warranty.

NOLO version 2.3.6
Version of 'sw-release': DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_005
Success

After this the phone will have a fully illuminated LED, which remains for a few seconds before it powers off, disconnecting from everything completely.

Running this:
flasher -F <firmware-image> --flash-only=kernel -f -R
If you're dualbooting run this command instead:
flasher -a <firmware-image> -k zImage.pr13 --flash-only=kernel -f -R
Code:

flasher 3.12.1 (Oct  6 2011) Harmattan

Charging battery,  0 % battery level (11 % required). Ctrl-c to exit

Flasher will connect to the phone like before, but now it will maintain it's connection. This will allow your N9 to recharge.

Code:

Charging battery,  1 % battery level (11 % required). Ctrl-c to exit
Charging battery,  2 % battery level (11 % required). Ctrl-c to exit
Charging battery,  3 % battery level (11 % required). Ctrl-c to exit
Charging battery,  4 % battery level (11 % required). Ctrl-c to exit

This is what it will look like whilst it's charging, I successfully disconnected mine at 7%, then plugged into the stock N9 wall-adapter to finish charging.

You must disconnect your N9 before it completes charging, or the program will proceed to wipe your phone. When you're ready to disconnect your N9, press ctrl and c simultaneously, which should show:

Code:

Cancelling flashing
      ...

This should fully resolve your N9's 0% battery troubles, if none of this works for you then this probably isn't your problem.

A few questions for the pros out there:
Wil running flasher -F <firmware-image> --flash-only=kernel -f -R leave everything but the kernel untouched if somebody forgets to cancel it?
Is there a command that would allow the phone to charge, but wouldn't actually flash anything to the N9 in case it executed?

Re: N9 Won't start.

your battery is dead...

press the power button for around 8seconds to let it turn OFF completely then plug it into flasher with commands flasher -i and let it charge for an hour... Then plug into wall charger for another hour or two...

optimaxxx 2012-11-04 06:22

Re: N9 Won't start.

Done, turned off completely, plugged in with flasher -i

returns:
Quote:

The device then has a fully illuminated LED, which remains for a few seconds before it powers off, disconnecting from everything completely.

thedead1440 2012-11-04 06:33

Re: N9 Won't start.

then do flasher -f -F rootfs.bin

it'll tell you that not enough power to flash as battery is less than 11%... Let it charge to 10% and then plug it out and connect to wall plug...

Dousan 2012-11-04 06:35

Re: N9 Won't start.

Plug it into a wallcharger and every time the led dies turn the phone of by holding the power button for 8 secs as thedead1440 said and repeat this untill you see the multiboot screen. Then boot into Nitdroid and let it charge there till it has about 10% then boot into MeeGo and charge it.
Meego somehow needs more juice to boot than Nitdroid?
It happend a few times for me that I ran out of juice in Nitdroid and it seems to fully drain it in Nitdroid to the point of no boot. Anyway this was the way I got it back to life. It takes some effort and time to make it charge to booting state ;)

Dousan...

This sounds like how mine behaved after I changed the screen when it got cracked. I only switched it off with a short key press so I think it detected what it would assume was a hardware failure when I disconnected then damaged screen, and prevented itself from being switched on, it also behaved like yours. Solution was to open it up and disconect the battery then reconnect it, after that it booted fine.

floyd03,

Firstly, stop posting in random threads!

Secondly, describe exactly what you did and what is the problem now? By dead N9 do you mean that trying to power it on does nothing? No blinking white LED too?

floyd03 2012-12-18 10:36

I tray to install nitdroid_n9_jellybean_alpha5.tar

everything was ok until I installed apps2sd_fix_alpha5.tar, because I wrote the wrong command it should be entered like "tar xjvf / home/user/MyDocs/apps2sd_fix_alpha5.tar.bz2-C / home / nitdroid /", and I was entered tar xjvf / home/user/MyDocs/apps2sd_fix_alpha5.tar.bz2-C.

and since then I can not run MeeGo system.
white LED is working, I have comunication with phone.

Re: N9 Won't start, 0% Battery - SOLVED

Now it seems like you may have re-written system files with nitdroid folders...

The easiest method would be to do a rootfs flash which would mean your ~/MyDocs/ partition wouldn't be affected but other data like logs, messages, apps etc would be erased...

You can read this guide to do a simple rootfs-only flash...

If you have important data or want to try to fix this issue by accessing your file system you may want to follow FIX MALF STATE steps till step 7 and once your device is mounted on your Linux/MAC system you can do whatever you want to it...

You mean you want to do a reboot on your device? Why can't you use the power button? Anyway its flasher -R for rebooting...

Ok you want to reflash right? I linked you to the guide follow it and its pretty easy...

Still if you need help this is how it goes:

- Grab a firmware image from Navifirm
- Put it into the flasher folder on your PC
- run flasher -f -F rootfs.bin -R in cmd to flash...

Your better picture cuts off the top of the output! Please post full outputs, its hard to see them without xray vision :D

Anyway from the pixels I think its a case of your phone being on pr1.3 and you using a pr1.2 image to flash so just get a pr1.3 image and flash...

Use navifirm to get a firmware image for your product code...Please specify the colour, capacity (16/64GB) and product code of your device if you can't get it from navifirm and need direct links...

Yup those images are correct... Use the first one as that's the rootfs.bin while the second one is emmc.bin which you don't need to flash currently...

Re: N9 Won't start, 0% Battery - SOLVED

You see on navifirm you showed me you a pr1.3 image but again you are flashing with a pr1.2 image!

Please use pr1.3 image and do the flash!

The image name for pr1.3 contains 40.2012 while pr1.2 is 30.2012 so you are using a 30.2012 image to flash...

Re: N9 Won't start, 0% Battery - SOLVED

i never had to do that ... I just let it turn on, and keep the power button pressed about 8 to 10 seconds, to forc it to shut down, connected to the wall charger. It automaticly will boot into MeeGo Off Charge state, and stays with the battery symbol and start offline mode charge.

(sorry about my english)

You always had 9GB as mass storage... Check in Settings->Device->Data Storage the values they sum up to be 16GB...If not post them here...

Re: N9 Won't start, 0% Battery

Hi, this is the second brand new battery (BV5JW I buy for my N9 but when I replace it, it won't charge. So the residual juice that comes in the new battery eventually dries out and it wont boot or charge again.

Clearly, it is not a problem with the new batteries being defective, as they were bought from different places, however my N9 does not want to recognize the new ones for some reason. When I put back the old one, it boots and charges normally.

I feel like I am being very stupid in here but I looked for other threads and I could not find anything related to my problem other than this one. Any idea of what is going wrong? Has anybody replaced their battery in their N9 successfully?

by the way, I tried the methods recommended in this post, but none of the work.

Thanks

It is not the usb port, If I put back the old battery, it charges again (the led blinks), but it wont happen with the newer batteries (led off all time). So I believe it must be something else.

I wonder if the phone does not recognize the old battery it wont charge any other like if the battery would not be present or something. Has anybody successfully replaced their N9 battery before?

Calling from Nitdroid is still work in progress, as mentioned in the 4.1.1 announcement.

And hello,

Bumping this thread because I have a similar problem to OP's – N9 won't boot, LED does not flash, is undetected via USB.

I have tried the guide on everythingn9, but with no avail (on Win7 Enterprise):
  • Navifirm can't connect to firmware server (auth error, have to get back on this because I am at work atm)
  • Flasher won't start

Luckily I found the flashing N9 wiki via search. I shall keep you posted with progress.

Re: N9 Won't start, 0% Battery - SOLVED

I have let my N9, with nitdroid installed to my little daughter to play with, so every week or so I have to use flasher to refill its drained out battery. I used the proces few times without problems.
But this week it doesn't work anymore.

Instead of telling me the tipical "phone at 0%" and start charging untill it gets 11% (control-z let you charge to 100% without installing anything), it returns what i print bellow.

The led don't turn solid white, but blinking solid white.

Have anybody find a workaround?

Any clue?

Re: N9 Won't start, 0% Battery - SOLVED

SOLVED: (I reply myself)

I ran the one kernel command instead of the dualbooting one and now it is charging.

flasher -F DFL61_HARMATTAN_40.2012.21-3_PR_LEGACY_006-OEM1-958_ARM.bin --flash-only=kernel -f -R

My N9 runs both meego and nitdroid. I hope nothing got mixed up. I stopped the process (control+z) at 1% of battery level, so flasher should not have copied anything to the phone yet.
