[SOLVED]How to flash N900 when hardware key (“U”) does not work?

Some of my hardware keys do not work including “U” (I F Y) also does not respond. Right now I use virtual keyboard for massaging and stuff. But I was thinking if I want to reflash my n900:( ?

Is this only hardware issue, or software?

I have a suggestion can I somehow swap my hardware keys?

i flashed it today (04 apr 2013)

here is the solution-
i run flasher without connecting the n900(usb) when it says "waiting for suitable device" i plug N900 into pc while holding the "P" key ( i dont think i would need to press "P" )

and WOhaaa it started flashing...:)

Yeah sure. Use xmodmap to rebind your keys.

An example of what your /home/user/.Xmodmap file might look like.

keysym F1 = u u

Here's a list of some key symbols you can use.

what is Xmodmap???

i dont have any file or folder under home/user/.xmodmap

mean while i hv found this link

http://wiki.maemo.org/Remapping_keyboard

but that page says

Quote:

Do not place the copy in the nokia_vndr folder or it will stop your phone from booting.
as i cannot reflash my n900 so i can not take any risk at this time, also i am noob so this risk increases because of my noobness

what i want from you. Please take my rx-51 (located /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/nokia_vndr/rx-51) file and swap my "U" key by "K"

it is just because i am noob and i dont want to break my n900(i love it)

as it is time here to sleep for me,so i would update this thread tomorrow

Thanks in advaced

Re: How to flash N900 when hardware key (“U”) does not work?

I can't help you in remapping your keys but how about a clean backupmenu backup in case you ever wanted to flash your N900 as your keyboard U key is not working why not just restore the clean backup then to have a N900 with factory settings ??

Re: How to flash N900 when hardware key (“U”) does not work?

You don't always have to press U to flash your device, so you might be OK. I don't think I've had to when I've flashed mine.

If it is a big concern, remember, even now, devices can be replaced, so as long as you keep backups on an sd card or elsewhere off the emmc, you can always recreate your setup.

holding U key is necessary to enter N900 into flashing mode without pressing it will simply put N900 into charging mode.

I have always pressed U key whenever i wanted to flash it.

Re: How to flash N900 when hardware key (“U”) does not work?

When flashing from a Linux PC, my method to flash is to remove the battery, run flasher command replace battery, and insert usb cable.

From the wiki

Quote:

Note: You may not need to hold the U key - it seems to automatically flash if the flasher is ready at boot time.
Reading other parts of the wiki, it appears that pressing U is important when flashing from a Windows setup to enable drivers to be installed. This is genuinely not the case from an Ubuntu Linux setup when I have flashed my device in the past. In fact I need to do a reflash over the next couple of days, so I'll try it to confirm.

Re: How to flash N900 when hardware key (“U”) does not work?

I've seen keyboard replacements for the N900 on eBay. Also, does the N900 have xev? you could run that, press the U key and see if it's the hardware or software (well that will at least determine it's not something particular programs are having issues with.)

http://www.ebay.com/sch/?_nkw=n900%2...d=410696682985

There are some replacement flex ribbons.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Black-fu...item2a13cebe89

And there is a keyboard / case.

@nicholes have you ever tried to flash your device in Linux ? as written in Wiki and confirmed by mrsellout that it is not required to hold U key while flashing N900 in Linux.

It's possible this will work on Windows as well as long as you've already (successfully) used your Windows installation at least once at flash a N900 before.
