Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
A new version of Kagu Media Player for maemo is out! You can download it here:
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/kagu/ This new 1.0.4 release includes: * Many performance enhancements (including faster AVRCP commands!) * New theme * Playback modes (repeat/repeat one/shuffle/normal) * SongPositionView for seeking in songs and audio books. * No more OK button in Album/Song/NowPlaying views. Instead, just tap an item to select it. Everyone currently running 1.0 or 1.0.2 should upgrade as this release is an all around better performer. **NOTE: We released a 1.0.3 version earlier today, but it was b0rked, so we re-released with a fixed 1.0.4! Thanks! |

NOTE: You have to be actually playing a song/book and it has to have a length in order to access the SongPositionView. That last part might seem silly, but sometimes the players (i.e. OSSO or Mplayer) take a few seconds to report the song length or don't report it at all. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4

Don't bother with the python 2.5 on maemo.org/downloads. It doesn't work. I don't know why. :( |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Stunning work here trevarthan
Just scrobbled my first tune from my N800 :) Gonna take this out with me on the road tomorrow. Many thanks Dave |

For example, the bulk of our new playmode support is disq's. In addition, maemoscrobbler is disq's work (without which we could not scrobble), and frankly this Kagu release (and every Kagu release before it) would never have made it out the door without his packaging effort. :) Honestly, I'm leaving a good deal out here. I really can't communicate how much he helps the project. I wake up nearly every morning and spend a large part of my day trading ideas with him. unique311 worked very hard and contributed the ground work of the new theme that you see. We weren't even using PSD files (i.e. layers) before he chipped in. The theme that ships with 1.0.4 has changed greatly from his original contribution, but without his work we probably would not have a new theme. Of course, I work hard on Kagu too, but it's really unfortunate that my name is on the release since Kagu is the collective effort of many. We intend to keep it that way too. Kagu is a community project. We hope you will join us in making Kagu better. We need theme designers, programmers, and testers. But most of all we need you to continue using Kagu and continue to give us feedback and ideas. Those things are what will make Kagu great for everyone. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Very nice, guys! Very nice! I like the new theme *much* better, and the deletion of the OK button makes it feel more "natural" now, compared to what I am used to on media players. Bluetooth icon now matches the connected/disconnected color of the Nokia toolbar icon. The shuffle and repeat modes are welcome additions.
Install went without a hitch, my A2DP still works great. I also updated mplayer since it had an update in the repository. One question: when I first ran the new version of Kagu, it wanted to scan for my songs. Does this just overwrite what I already had scanned in 1.0.2, or does it create another storage directory for album covers? All of my songs right now are on 'mmc2'. Not a big deal, I just figured if there were some files I could delete, I would do it. Anyways, congrats on the new version guys...hope more people come around and give Kagu a chance. I for one appreciate all the hard work, it's made my N800 push my iPod a little bit further away. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Great work ! Thanks a lot guys!

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
I have Python 2.5 installed and no previous versions of your player. The 1 click download did it's thing and I have 2 new apps in the "Extras" folder, the player and the scanner.
Launching the player pops up the app loading window... then nothing. Launching the scanner also does nothing. Am I missing something here? |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4

The best thing to do is SSH into your tablet and run `kagu-scanner` from an xterm. Please paste the last 10 lines of the output here. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Actually, i had the same issue. I tried the scanner and the app and got nothing. It turned
out that /home/user/.kagu was owned by the "root" user and group for some reason. I did 'rm -Rf .kagu' and then ran kagu from the app menu and it worked just fine now. .kagu is now owned by "users" instead of "root". |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
How do things get owned incorrectly? I have the same issue as above, and have never included any "hacks" to the device to allow root access etc, so how does that particular problem occur?
Also how do you fix it without the need to get xterm and go hacking things about, surely an app installed from the application manager should "just work" for every user. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
uh. That will be a problem for new installations. I fixed it in trunk, we'll probably roll a new release in a few hours.
edit/answer: It's caused by the fix we made in 1.0.4. The postinst script runs kagu-scanner to remove the previous db, but runs it as root, and if it's a fresh installation prefs directory is created with root permissions. The new code in trunk (possibly 1.0.5) will run the initial kagu-scanner as "user", it will also fix /home/user/.kagu permissions before doing so. Sorry about the setback. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Great. Nice answer and even better to have a fix in the pipeline :)

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Released 1.0.5, fixes the above problem as well as some enhancements we managed to get out of trunk:

Again, sorry about two borked (so far :P ) releases in a row. |

Also, 1.0.5 includes some fixes for SongPositionView. In 1.0.4 it was failing to jump to the current time when SongPositionView was first opened. This should be fixed now. Also, using the dpad to select a time in the SongPositionView would fail to reset the timeout and the view would close after 5 seconds while you're trying to find the time you want to seek to. This is fixed too. Dpad works like tap and drag now and both actions will reset the 5 second timeout properly. Frankly, 1.0.5 is what 1.0.3 should have been. It's a much nicer release. Oh well. Release early, release often. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
I don't know if this would be the right thread to put this, but I have a group of songs that I have put under a directory and gave them all an album name (granted its a bogus name) with the hopes it would come up in the album list. The scanner lists the bogus album but of course doesn't find one. When kagu runs, the bogus album doesn't show up, hence I can't find a way to listen to the songs in that directory then. I could look into the source, but thought I would ask here first. Would this be a feature (ie, only known albums are playable) or a new request to extend the application?

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
I see this differently. I have a folder simply titled Various that contains many different songs. All the songs have had the album title removed, but they all show up under a single "various" album in Kagu with the artist being the name of the last artist in the folder!! .... shown with the CD icon :)
Same thing happens with compilations, the name appears correctly but the artist name appears to be the artist of the last track in the folder. |

I think this is the bug that we filed for it: https://www.guardiani.us/projects/kagu/ticket/64 It may not sound like the exact same issue you're seeing, but it happens in the same part of the code and I think fixing one would probably fix the other. This should be pretty easy for anyone with some coding experience and a compilation CD to fix. If no one jumps on it, then I might go out and buy a compilation CD this weekend. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Wow! This is an awesome application guys. Excellent work! :)
There's one feature I'd like to see if it's possible. The ability to zoom in on album covers would be cool. Keep up the great work, and thanks for the awesome Kagu. |

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
The thing about compilation albums and categorization is a little complicated, we're working on some ideas with trev. We'll try to fix that by next release, which should be this sunday or maybe early monday.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Out and about on a 260 mile round trip in the car with my N800 a Nokia N73 and kagu.
Listened to a whole bunch of music this morning and on my return trip a bunch of podcasts. I get home and hit my last.fm profile and there's my recently listened tracks all populated and up to date :) I once again express my thanks to the project team. On a side note my preferred method of syncing my audio content from iTunes on my Mac to my N800 is SyncTunes. Awesome app, It even converts one of my fave AAC based podcasts to MP3 on the fly as it syncs :) Thanks again Dave |
scrolling problem after first selection
great application, thank you!
BUT: I have a problem with scrolling, and I could not submit a Ticket because the registering process did not work at the KAGU site, so I post it here: scrolling works nicely as long as I select the first album and then go back to the album list. then scrolling does not work any more, only three (out of my 5) albums are shown static on the screen. Pressing around on the screen only selevts one out of those 3, but does not scroll. Same behaviour with the navigation pad: after KAGU started fresh, I can scroll thru the list and it wraps around when I hit the end, after first time selecting an album and going back, the list is static and does not wrap around any more. Restarting KAGU resolves the problem, but it does come back every time. Thank yo for any insights, karl. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4

I did notice one thing last night that was a bit odd, and I almost thought it was streaming Rhapsody thru A2DP. I was listening in Kagu over Bluetooth headphones, and I paused the song. I then started Rhapsody and started the music in there, but it came thru the speakers on the N800, but it also unpaused the song I had been listening to in Kagu and started playing my song over the headphones again. Somewhere, they are sharing something I guess. |

Where does Kagu get it's Album cover graphics from? On a few of mine, it downloads the wrong cover, which is not Kagu's fault, it's the album cover database it is accessing online. Is there a way to manually change the covers? It's not really a big deal, since I read the name anyways... |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Sorry for the string of posts all in a row, but I wanted to pass this info along. I picked up this cool little device last night, and it works great with A2DP streaming in Kagu:
http://www.anycom.com/products/bluet...&partno=CC3317 It's a tiny receiver that plugs into pretty much *any* iPod speaker dock or iPod car stereo adapter, allowing other devices to use the huge selection of iPod accessories. It is completely powered by whatever dock you have it plugged into...right now, I am using mine in a Logitech mm50 speaker dock. Even using a remote control to go to the next track, pause, etc., it all works as if there were an iPod there. Pretty handy little thing, lets me get more usage out of my iPod stuff. It's a nice complement to Kagu, since many people have iPod interfaces or cables in their cars already, some cars even come with them installed from the factory. |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
Please make Kagu able to play Ogg file... (via the Ogg player for example?)
|
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
trevarthan: I don't know if you noticed this but your wonderful media player got into the ars journals...
I'm still trying to find time to add that play all feature but you seem to be doing updates quicker than I can keep up with :) Nick |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
So i as far as i understand the ad2p cannot be used to listen to internet streams( correct me if i am wrong). So is it a software problem or a hardware issue? I mean if it is a software issue will it be resolved in the future with updates? If yes.... do we have any time line for this.
well the reason i am asking all these is because i am planning to buy the nokia bh 601 bluteooth headset. So aANYONE WHO HAS USED THIS HEADSET PLEASE DO REPLY ON THE PROS AND CONS OF THE HEADSET , SPECIALLY ITS COMPATIBILITY WITH N800. thanks |
Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.4
sachin007: The way a2dp is set up in kagu is by passing the name of the a2dp alsa device to mplayer. Currently only mplayer understands this option so only kagu (which uses mplayer for a2dp) can play music other, software needs to be changed to handle this option and possibly the alsa architecture as well (i think the key one would be for nokia to allow their media player to use a2dp but although it is on the roadmap don't expect it very soon.)
I believe you can get audio streaming working if you are happy to use shoutcast streams and enjoy playing on the command line. Maybe an app to handle these should come next... I had a play and if you save the playlist file into playlist.txt, then start a2dp you can run the following: Code:
mplayer -playlist playlist.txt -ao alsa:device=a2dpd2 -ac ffmp3 edit: just a quick update, you can put the stream url in but don't forget to escape the &... i.e: Code:
mplayer -playlist http://shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=1025\&file=filename.pls -ao alsa:device=a2dpd2 -ac ffmp3 |

Thank you nick for the quick reply. Well by internet radio i specifically mean shoutcast streams. So from what i understand you say that that will work... just that i need to make a playlist at the command line level. Actually i am a noob and i have not even tried using the ad2p with the saved mp3 's. The reason being that i am planning to buy the nokia bh 601 headset and i am just wondering my opitons if it is worht teh money..... since bh 604 is going to be released pretty soon. I use the shout cast radio streams a lot( about 6 hours atleast each day). So if they work then it would be like perfect for me. So can you confirm if you used ad2p to stream shout cast streams to the bluetooth headset? If so how was teh experience?/ i mean the quality?? I haave a bose triport headphone which i am willing to sell to replace the nokia bh 601. Is the quality in par with bose triport headphones?? And what about the battery life?? What head phone are you using. What do you recommend |
