is there hope for running sailfish os on n900

is there a hope for n900 to run sailfish os

Re: is there hope for running sailfish os on n900

Remember - porting is one thing (and I know not wots wot there) and usability / enjoyment is another. Sailfish - 2012/13 OS; n900 - 2008/9 hardware. Hmmm.......

I would love to be wrong.

I thought N900 users are more experienced users and there won't be a dumb thread like this, I'm wrong.
Luckily no one is asking it for N8x0 (for now)

What about other hardware? My dream is to be able to choose my hardware and my OS separately, does Sailfish bring that dream any closer to reality?

Yours and everyone else's of a FOSS mindset....

Sadly, no as no OS can operate without hardware drivers and those are what phone manufacturers are notoriously bad in releasing as opensource. Thus the n900 still labours under the burden of specific binary blob hardware drivers. Sailfish would need such to operate on one or other pieces of kit.

There are completely open handsets - google around - but cutting edge they 'aint.

This comment will show how very little I know about any of this...but why is it possible to get Android to run on the N9 and N900 then? But not the reverse.

Elrond: Why do you linger here when there is no hope?
Arwen: There is still hope.

I heard from Jolla on Twitter that the N900 is *un*-officially supported, I may have misunderstood the topic from them, but I understood that it IS supported. However, there is hope for everything :)

Re: is there hope for running sailfish os on n900

LoL, either it is supported or NOT! It can be unoffically supported from a Compony! Its NOT supported!

But that doesen't mean its impossible to run it! Let's wait and see!

I like the word Compony.. So correct! And it is supported. Just like the N9/50.

AMD, I have no idea where you get your information from but Jolla never said it supported N9 or N900! However, they said that some smart-*** dev/modder could easily port it. They will never ever support these Nokia devices, they even can't legally ;)

I know, gosh. Just please get my point, what I meant is when they said "Technically, yes it's supported but we can't provide official support for it in any way." Okay, THAT'S what I mean by supported. That someone (not Jolla) will be able to port it, POSSIBLE. See what I mean?

Re: is there hope for running sailfish os on n900

Technically it s possible BUT :

* Only 256Mb of memory will require a lot of use of swap, will make the os slow.
* GPU drivers are closed source, not sure if it ll be useable : so mean a really really slower UI.
* Not multi touch screen where ux is designed for multi touch

So it could run but not good enough for a daily use ...

What about "fully functional"? And as I saw on the demo, it runs smoothly enough on the N950 which means the same on the N9..

On n9 it s a different case (1gb of ram, better cpu, faster gpu), not the same hardware than the n900, we were talking about n900 here ...

Oh, sorry, I thought you where talking about the N9 (I knew there was something wrong going around).

Me too, that's way I use it. :D are you saying that the three amaegos are supported by Jolla? Or what are you saying?

Well, the OS does run on all 3 devices. But by supported, I mean, not Jolla will port it. But they confirmed that it ran on the N900, but not as functional as on the N9/50. They aren't going to be ported by Jolla (To Jolla, support means port, which they won't do). They said that a hacker out there is doing it, he will port it as soon as he reveals the tutorials. They only tried it to confirm that it works on those 3. A hacker will soon port it to our devices.
Concerning the N900, it will work but it doesn't confirm or assure that the device won't lead to further Hardware faults due to porting it. It will make the HW just weaker, it won't be that good to be daily used. But for the N9 and N950, it will be smooth enough that you can even replace Harmattan with it ;)

I thought N900 users were open minded and always keen for any kind of disscussion concerning our beloved N900s.
Not calling rude names on people who just have questions and ideas.

I'm wrong.

Luckily no one has shot us in the face (for now) .

sorry your grace, hyno111. we cannot compare with your great mind.

Nothing wrong, I can't put my finger on it, it's just fun. I especially love the part with the hacker.

The Jolla presentation has shown a Raspberry Pi device, so it seems Sailfish OS is RAM efficient.

heh, I've got one of those:

http://www.swagman.org/juice/12120002.jpg

Should I install Sailfish on that?
Or maybe I could put it on my trusty 48SX lying there under the berry :p

Re: is there hope for running sailfish os on n900

Correct me if im wrong but I thought the N9 and the N900 used the same GPU?
So if it works on the N950 it should work on all of them?

Re: is there hope for running sailfish os on n900

But guys.

I don't understand how can you say it works perfectly on the n950 - what we saw is that it can open and close apps, play music, and nothing more.

They didn't show phone calls, web browsing or anything else that might be related to the hardware capabilities, so we can assume wifi, phone, bluetooth and all that huzzahh does not work in Sailfish on the n950.

Let the sdk be released first...

Dave999 2012-12-08 10:35

Re: is there hope for running sailfish os on n900

Yeah, where are the binaries???

Jolla has updated the sailfish OS. Org with this. Delay delay delay... Error and danger! :(

Instead of coming soon we now read:

"
SDK Binaries
We are improving based on the feedback we have got from the community and the SDK will be available for download in early Q1 2013. Stay tuned on these shores."

What feed back? I want to give feedback. Closed source feedback! It's not open if it's not open and available to everyone.
