[ANNOUNCE] Defense Gear - a 3D tower defense game
 
Hi people! Haven't been here in a while. I'm proud to announce our new game "Defense Gear" is available for Maemo now. It's a 3D tower defense game with some twists (targeting areas and manual aiming on demand, etc.) We're in a competition again, so please support the Android version by downloading and rating, it's available on Google Play and would mean a lot to us.

As far as Maemo version is concerned, I guess it's a game that should run at 60 fps, but I'm no Carmack and I set it up in a way that (mostly) holds 30 fps. It's made for Androids primarily, which are diverse, and the game can scale with frameskip and detail settings. Defaults are 30 fps, medium-res textures and high geometry and effects. That's a preset I'm happy with on my N900. If you want to tinker around, you can open up settings.ini and set frameskip to 1 (target 60 fps) lower the settings in-game, overclock and whatnot. Antialiasing setting doesn't do anything, didn't have the time to remove the checkbox. Also, as with my previous games, I still don't know a way to enable VSync, so there will be some tearing. All in all, I think it's a playable port. For now, I'll just post the archive for advanced and adventurous users to try out for now. Please let me know if you have any problems running or have any general feedback. Depending on how you transfer the game on your phone, you may need to do something like this:

I don't have a N9, nor any SDK (or experience) for it at the moment. I'd need to take a good look at those first. Any quick tips from other developers would be welcome.

Awesome, tower defense is always good!

Edit: Ok, Wow. Litteraly blew my mind. Good graphics and extremely smooth. (900MHZ). The 3d aspect is awesome. Was expecting a normal top view but this is awesome. Will soon install this on my Nexus 7 and give some rating :)

Thank you very much! Glad you liked it :) I looked around and couldn't find any tower defense games in 3D for Android, it could be the first. I wasn't sure I could pull it off, this was my biggest technological leap yet, but I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

EDIT: but please still support the N900. the S3's my wife's, the N900 is mine and I'm the one who plays tower defense games. :D

@HtheB, yeah, I only lurked around at times, since I'm not using my N900 actively anymore. But basis of my tech was written at a time I only had my N900, so it compiles there, and it would be a shame not to publish it :)

It is actually explained in the first post.

1. Download the .tar.gz

2. Unpack it in any directory you want. (I used filebox)

This should create the directory: DefGear-meamo, inside are the gamefiles and the executable.

3. Use this command:

sudo gainroot
You need RootSH.

4. Navigate to the directory of DefGear-meamo with XTerminal.

5. Run this command:

sudo chown -r user DefGear-maemo
This will allow files to be run as user

6. Use this command:

chmod +x ./RevDefense
This will make RevDefense executable.

7. Run this command:

./RevDefense

Downloaded on Android and rated!

I think there might be problems if you try to install both SDKs, so it's probably easier setting a debian/ubuntu virtual machine and building it there. besides that it works pretty much the same way as N900's sdk, using scratchbox. If you need anything else just ask :)

If you copied it to FAT32 partition (MyDocs), then you can't make it executable. Copy it in /home/user. Also, do "sudo chown -r user DefGear-maemo".

Sorry, I missed something in my explanation. You will either need to do: sudo gainroot. Or make the directory executable with: "sudo chown -r user DefGear-maemo" as stated above by ThaBurek. To do so you might also need the gainroot command.

If it can run on Maemo so nice, it can fly on MeeGo :)

Not sure since I can't test this at the moment. With this code I have put RevDefense in my /home/user/Revdefense.

1. Create a RevDefense.desktop file in "/usr/share/applications/hildon/"

2. The RevDefense.desktop should contain
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=0.1
Type=Application
Name=Defense Gear
Exec=/home/user/Revdefense ./RevDefense
Icon=

3. Reboot to see the shortcut.

Not a clue if this will work since I killed my N900 yesterday. There are serveral posts explaining this on the Meamo forum though.

@TheBurek,

Good to see Maemo is not forgotten.

Any reason why there is no deb file? Starting from the command prompt is always somewhat inconvenient. And I see a lot of people struggling with that over here.

That's why I create a deb file myself, of course with credits to gedoragames included. If the reason was just lack of time, I hope I can hand it over to you. I don't like to provide it here without your permission.

Hi again. Thank you all for your interest! I don't mind having a DEB, just haven't got around to making it myself. I contacted ade, and I guess we'll have it available for download very soon. There's also considerable interest in N9, as far as I can see. I can't promise-promise I'll make it, but I'll definitely look into it, let you know as soon as I know more.

I'll update the first post in the next few seconds. You should be able to just open it and install via GUI, or alternatively, use something like sudo dpkg -i Defense_Gear_1.1.0-0_armel.deb.

T-t-triple post! Sorry for that, but I wanted to ask, now that I'm here, how do you feel about the game balance? Too easy, too difficult? Do you feel that some towers are useless or overpowered? Any other (reasonable) suggestions for improvement?

Not me at least :)

Did you install the deb file, or did you use the tar.gz file?

If you used the tar.gz file: did starting from the command prompt result in an error message in x-terminal?

If you used the deb file:
In x-terminal:

cd /opt/DefGear-maemo
./RevDefense.sh
And see if any error appear after your crash.
