Re: what is better. Nokia n9 or Lumia 820??

If you like meego/Harmattan; buy the n9.
If you like windows; buy the 820.

Simple! How hard can it be?

I say go for N9 since you are here. umia will have one more update. The n9 will not. Noone is better than the other. Strange isn't it :D

Out of curiosity. How did you came up with these two options?

Re: what is better. Nokia n9 or Lumia 820??

Personally I would never opt for a Windows device that connects to the internet. I kind of like Windows, as long as it is not connected and it seems to be a pretty stable OS, that way. Or at least, it works for the machine I play games on, use to photoshop and make electronic music.

So, for me, I would take an N9 any day over any other smartphone device.

That does not seem to be a generally accepted opinion though...

Have a look

Re: what is better. Nokia n9 or Lumia 820??

I had an option to buy a white n9 for 250€ or get a l820 for free and went with n9. L820 definetely offers better web browsing, camera maybe, larger screen but come on, it's not meego.

Depends what kind of cat. I would say a dog is stronger and better than most of the cats, but if you talking big cat like a tiger i would definitely go for the tiger.

so stay in nokia N9??

tonyhuynh 2013-01-21 23:17

Lumia 820 is better when no more model comes up. N9 is better as long as the crowd stay here!

Re: what is better. Nokia n9 or Lumia 820??

The thing is, l820 is just boring. What can you do with it except calling and texting? I don't think about myself as a geek but I like to do some stuff with a phone. Even with symbian I could do some modding in firmware and I know you did that too (I didn't like your cfw but it's not the case). I cannot tell you which one to choose, these are too different phones for two different markets. I'd pick L820 if I wanted to focus on my studies and use a phone for calling, texting and web browsing. L820 is also good if you don't have a car as the touchscreen is sensitive enough for you to operate in regular gloves while it's quite cold in Poland recently.
It's a tough decision and only you can make it. I'd say go for l820 if you want to leave any forum activity or stay with us with N9 and I'm sure the community will not disappoint you.

Re: what is better. Nokia n9 or Lumia 820??

N9 for open source software, "tweakabilty", and Meego. 820 for stable Os (ironicaly), good web browsing and updates.

I used a 800 and ditched it for a N9 because of closed Os (very difficult to tweak the os or get open source software, although possible), and because most of apps are real crap (I can't count how many useless apps I found in the marketplace). 820 with wp8 and nokia apps could be enough for some though.

On N9, I have good and robust apps for my every needs, even though app catalog is really limited. Power of love vs money I think ;)

Also, keep in mind that good community make good devices ...

Without your needs and uses listed, that type of criteria would allow for people to give you a better answer instead of the above opinions only that might not coincide with your needs/wants.

And for the record, who would ever buy a smartphone in this day and age and not want it to connect to the Internet? That's like buying a HDTV and never turning it on.

N9, for sure!
Also, N8, N900, Nokia 701 (Symbian, not 710)

WP sucks!

In my opinion N9 is a better device but unfortunately right now Windows Phone is far more commercial and there are more apps for it.

Having lots of apps is IMHO one of the least useful criteria for a device :D

Re: what is better. Nokia n9 or Lumia 820??

all of the apps that I use daily on my N9 are nowhere to be found on WP8 (either the specific app or something that works as well)

N9 hands down.

WP is way too limited

N9 is no longer supported. So if you require any warranty work, you're going to be stuck.

tonyhuynh 2013-01-22 23:11

I once used wp7.5 and could not bare it more than one wk.

Nokia 820 is WP8. Let's stay relevant.

Far more apps for what ? N900, even N810, has some softwares (in some areas) that Windows Phone users only can dream of.

The first post of this thread is non-sense if the desired use is not specified. Maybe a Nokia Asha 302 is better than a N9, depending on the user needs.

this, my N9 has way more useful apps available than my wife's L920

she had an Android before and it had way more than both my N9 and the L920

I dont get this WP8 ecosystem argument.

Although I am a Symbian developer I don't encourage you to buy Symbian devices any more :( couple of days ago Nokia announced that Nokia 808 PureView is the last Symbian device which means that the OS is dead and software developers have already ramp down the development and support of apps for Symbian.

Re: what is better. Nokia n9 or Lumia 820??

I am to make this decision as well. I was very happy with my N9 except that it didn't had some apps I wanted and although it's performance wasn't that bad, it wasn't as fluid as WP8 or iOS, either. Also there were no updates for the stock apps and I wasn't very happy with some cons of Twitter and Facebook app.

I'll probably buy Lumia 820 (already sold my N9) but I'll definately miss the great user experience on N9. The swipe gestures and the buttonless UI design is simply unmatchable by any OS out today. Also the typing experience is better on N9. Also I was in love with camera quality of N9 and looking at the camera quality of 820 makes me wanna cry, although I heard some people saying the sensors are identical. The sample pictures taken by Lumia 820 appears to be losing details and too bright. One other point is that 4.3" screen is a little too big for my hand, I like operating my phone with just one hand and it is hard on 4.3" screens.

On the other hand, by buying Lumia 820 you will get a better overall performance (while doing everyday things like browsing web, Facebook, Twitter, using navigation). You will also get an OS that constantly gets updates and new apps. I can only count 2-3 advantages of Lumia 820 but these advantages are really important on daily usage so...

Re: what is better. Nokia n9 or Lumia 820??

my wife's Lumia 920 froze for a good 2 hours yesterday, she was sending a text when it froze, none of the buttons worked, the screen stayed on the message.

I tried holding all of the buttons for lengths of time.

I finally found the way to reset it, hold volume down and power button for 10 seconds and it will restart.
