Is OS 2007 ever going to come?
 

Don't know about you all, lots of you are old-time users, but I bought the 770 in part because I read that the OS would be upgraded. I am particularly concerned about the "poof" issue with Opera, and the option to wake from sleep with alarms using GPE Calendar. (That's support for alarmd, I believe.)

Has anyone heard anything? What's with the whole "tell you we're going to do something in a few weeks, then say absolutely nothing for two months" deal?

It's just dumb. At least give some feedback, tell us what's up and who is working on it, please.:confused: Because the suspicion immediately becomes that you aren't doing anything and you somehow hope people will forget about it.

Has anyone heard anything? And please don't point me to the dead Garage page, or to some weeks-old thread. I search pretty regularly. I 'm interested in new info.:)

I'm sure it will come, last I read they've got someone on the case....but it's only one person and I doubt anyone has touched anything since the last version was released. So I'm expecting either the same core as before with fixes of the problems (plus fixes inc that other people have done on bugzilla) or they'll try to quickly hack together the latest N800 release, fix as many bugs as they can then release, where everyone will find many more bugs but they'll never be properly fixed.

I'm not keeping my hopes up but you never know! I say release it to the public, the clever people will probably do wonders, if that did happen then it would become more interesting, although that would bring it's own problems unless a certain select group handled the updates, rather than everyone releasing their own.

I already made a thread about this...they said soon on maemo last month. but then there hasn't been anything since.

to tell you the truth, this new OS isn't "official" even though it is a lot more stable than OS2006. So in Nokia's eyes, the 770 is EOL'd and technically shouldn't be getting anymore official updates which I think is crap.

Hi, just a pong to say that yes there has been more development on a new version of the Hacker Edition for the Nokia 770. The release expected to be delivered in some weeks is getting longer, but hopefully you will consider worth the wait when it finally comes.

That is pretty ridiculous indeed. Especially considering it's the main function of the Internet tablet device. I'm now using Minimo 0.2 which not only supports more websites (Web 2.0), but is also more stable after increasing the cache size (about:config, just like regular Firefox). :)

The only downside to Minimo is it's rendering time. On 'advanced' websites this can take up to 30 seconds. It's said this is due to all the extra javascript etc. it renders, which Opera normally just ignores (or crashes because of). I have found increasing the http connection limit (again via about:config) seems to counteract this problem somewhat*.

* might also be placebo.. heh!

I just installed GPE 2.8 and I got an alarm to go off with the cover on. I haven't yet had time to play with it extensively, but that may address one of your concerns.

Ditto. Thanks Qim for the update. I think most in the community are anxiously waiting for the update to the Hacker Edition. We appreciate keeping us informed, because when it gets quiet people tend to think the worst.

I delayed upgrading mine to the HE because I'm patiently waiting until the bugs are worked out and the new HE is released.

By the way, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of new US 770 owners (due to the lower price) out there. I know many on the "deal" forums know about the Hacker Edition, we're all looking forward to the upgrade.

Very true about the new wave of 770 owners... and yes, it's simply embarrassing how often Opera just vanishes. No "low memory" dialog. No "can't load this page" error. Just bye-bye. I mean, there's a lot of pages my S60 browser will choke on, but at least it stops to complain, and lets me navigate back through my history to browse something else.

I really don't think Nokia understands how much of this experience poisons our view of the platform (re: performance and support) as a whole, and that's a crying shame.

Anyways I would like to respond to the question about opera crashing. I am quite positive that other versions of opera will automatically bring up the old pages you were viewing when they crashed. It was a really handy feature which i used extensively on another internet appliance (ia1). It had similar specs to the 770 and ran opera 5. Opera was always running out of memory and would crash. I would then proceed to bring up opera again and a dialog box opened up asking if I wanted to restore the previous pages. BAM!!! i was back in action, my mail account was still logged in, etc... . So why hasent this feature been turned on in the 770 version?

What would you recommend for cache size? and is this memory cache or disk cache?

All right, this is kind of getting ridiculous. Can anyone tell me an actual date that we can expect this new improved 2007 OS for the 770 or is this just all talk? I really liked the first HE edition, but had to switch back to OS 2006 because of a lot of issues (mainly audio and video streaming, among many other issues)

I really doubt that anyone here can tell you a date unless someone from Nokia comes out and specifically says a target date is X. It is too bad they are being so quiet about when the updated HE edition is coming.

Really dun think any update version of 2007he will ever come! I will keep using it2006 until the day the 770 die itself.

I just got my 770 this past week and I have seen opera crash so many time that it is getting ridiculous. I hope they have an updated version of the OS soon.

What am I missing? I use opera almost all the time and don't see any crashes.

I've tried minimo but its lack of optimized view, and the fact I can't figure out how to copy and paste in it, always drive me back to opera.

Running a dual-boot 770 with 2007HE on the internal flash and fanoush's hack 2006 speed extensions on the MMC. Almost always boot to the MMC.

Just for clarification.

I came here to post my first message about the 770 just because one of the kind maemo contributors bridging ITT & maemo.org asked/advised to do so in the #maemo IRC channel.

My second post is just a link to an email from Carlos (responsible of the HE project at Nokia) sent to the maemo-developers list (an official channel).

People had been requesting us to be somehow responsive at least in some key discussions in ITT, and this is what I'm trying to do here. Nothing else.

Carlos and I have talked more about this in our blogs. This is another non-official channel but, well, it serves a useful purpose. Blogs (aggregated to Planet maemo and appearing at http://maemo.org/news is the channel we are using to comment things on future official releases as well, so there is no different treatment, really.

Please wait just a bit more and you will have the new HE released.

If you don't want to loose custom kernel or initfs with bootmenu, it may be good idea to extract just rootfs.jffs2 and flash it alone

May I add that the "what's new & main issues" section on this page is a good sight more that what before for most official releases of Maemo, so that effort is really appreciated.

But the best part, I guess, must be this :

Now THAT may change a few minds... I know I'm mellowed as a critic, at least :-)

No, 2GB is supported in Nokia kernel in last 2 IT2006 firmwares. But if you want also faster mmc then yes.

As far as I can tell, copy & paste is not enabled at all in Minimo.

But if you absolutely need a work-around (and I did, one time I was on a dictionary site that Opera wouldn't display right): select the text, drag it to the "find" bar, go to where you want to paste, then drag it from the find bar to the area you want to paste into. Once you've got the hang of it, it's just as fast as a regular copy & paste. Dragging works great in Minimo.
