Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MirSpec
It sounds worse and worse to me, seeming like Ubuntu plans to isolate itself completely from the rest of the Linux world (not unlike Android?). Why can't they use Wayland? Their explanation on the page is very vague. In general it sounds like a horrible fragmentation attempt. |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Probably because everybody criticizes them and probably won't help them in any way.
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
To help them to fragment Linux?
Think for example of graphics drivers and games developers. Now they work with X.org. Next big shift - Wayland. Their head already spins. Now Ubuntu blows things up with their Mir. I already imagine games developers say - forget this mess, stick with Windows?? And driver developers even more. Nvidia will just shrug and say - forget it. And there will no Wayland driver... |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Go your own way if you believe in it! Make it or break it...

Good summary by Aaron Seigo, though he doesn't address the potential drivers fragmentation issue.

Canonical is a cancer
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
This one is even more interesting, I can't figure out how they plan to do that in a year:

Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
I really hope the drivers they are pressuring Nvidia and AMD about will be working with Wayland. At least some possible positive outcome from this.
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Or maybe they'll eventually make it a truly open initiative, one which longer-term will result in a merging (of sorts) between Mir + [Wayland(Weston)].
After all, they/others have benefited from (& contributed_to/refined) Sailfish's libhybris, one can dream... >.> :( |

Everything about input sucks :D
That's what makes the issue here not MIR. Lol EGO bruised  |

Chris Halse Rogers, the Canonical employee, was quick to joke around that "It's [Canonical's] turn to pull a systemd!"* Kristian was quick to let the Canonical developer know he doesn't agree with Mir and that "the technical reasons on the Mir page just don't add up." In particular, "everything about input" that the Ubuntu developers say as shortcomings with Wayland. Kristian added, "don't go out and tell the whole world how wayland*is*broken*and has all X's input problems...that's what pisses me off...you can do*whatever*youwant*and you don't need my permission but don't piss on wayland in the process."* Chris Halse Rogers saying Canonical was unsure if their contributions would be accepted into upstream Wayland, followed by the Canonical developer admitting, "I'm unfamiliar with wayland's input handling."* Kristian ended up responding to Rogers saying that he doesn't think Canonical meant to "piss" on Wayland by saying, "so don't go and tell the world it's broken if you don't know what it is." Kristian additionally said, "I'll have fun explaining how that's not the case to everybody for the next few months."* |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Google+ session all about Wayland coming up, plus some Q&A's:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c...7nl5eglddlju00 One Qn canvassed already is; Relationship between Plasma's recent efforts & Nemo/Sailfish, & where that can be further refined/improved. |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
What is the way to particiate in questions there. One needs to be a G+ user? I have Google mail/XMPP account as well as Youtube one, but not G+.
Where is the question about Sailfish there by the way? I couldn't find it. |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Daniel Stone (who worked at Collabora on OS200x/maemo/Meego devices) did a good presentation about 'The Real Story Behind Wayland and X' back in February. It might help provide some context whilst we're on the subject:

Yep, that's a good presentation.

Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
add to this the news that now Canonical is pushing into the tablet market and looking at how to manage DRM content.......
Seems like business always gets in the way of OSS. I'm now doubting if libhybris would have been opened up for them to use like this if the end game for Canonical was just to further their own business model.... especially when others closer to us have opted for the DRM free choice. then again, that's the fun of knowing that there's plenty of other linux flavours to enjoy... |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Yeah, that DRM part is in sharp contrast with Sailfish.

This is only at the discussion stage clearly, however it is worth bearing in mind that Canonical already has a close (did i say data harvesting? - Stallman called it spyware) relationship with Amazon, and DRM will be an issue that needs resolving if they want to push that relationship further with regard to a tablet ecosystem supporting media and streaming... |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Am I the only one here who is on the paranoid side and tend to think they named it to be similar to MER just create that more confusion in Linux mobile landscape?
"This new platform has MIR!" "Sweet, does it run SailfishOS?" "Sure....I think so..." When I had first heard the rumors that they were going to start using their own windowing system, I instantly thought, "wow, they think they have enough pull to completely split from everyone else and be like Android?" It, is like they want to be their own incompatible Linux stack... they are even talking about having their own SDK... http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...tem&px=MTMxOTg slaapliedje |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
I had such thought, but I doubt the name Mir will be even known by those who could be confused.
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Mir == Peace in russian, I think?
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Mir == space station
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Mir is "peace" and a sunken space station as well.
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Could also mean world...
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Ha ha! Wasn't Mir the space station that mostly fell apart in atmosphere and the toilet seat killed the girl from Dead Like Me and so she became the reaper known as Toilet Seat girl?
slaapliedje P.S. If you haven't ever watched that series, I HIGHLY recommend it. |
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
Are you sure it was the toilet seat? Haven't seen it but it sounds highly unlikely.

Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
I don't get what the problem is couldn't mir be used on other distros.
|
Re: Canonical announces their own graphics server - Mir
No, because there is no reason for other distros to switch into canonical nonsense.

I would also prefer weeeeland. At the same time I love companies moving it's own way like ubuntu and jolla.
