[ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

This is the documentation for porting Kali Linux to Maemo/Meego
Kali Linux ARM
And download link for pc's
Kali Linux
I'm downloading it now when I have a minute to try porting Maemo / Meego.

That's all well and good but im not trying to build my oun. I should beable to boot the ARM img. from my SD card with out all that. Does someone know if could i use the same method for booting up meego just useing the kali ARM img. or something along thoes lines?

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

I have been having trouble transfering the .img after extraction of the .xz of the armel image of kali. I seem to have gotten to 2.00 gb and then the transfer just crashes.

Does anybody know what the default format for the mini sd card in the back of the phone?

Some formats for drives have limits on the size of data that can be transfered. I know with ntfs you can't transfer anything over 4gb. I am curious if there is a restriction. Kali is 5.2gb and I also tried transfering it to the phone. I was able to sync my phone and transfers images to the phone, but something with kali I think being too big is causing problems.

Any one know how to extract an .xz file on the n900?

instead of NTFS use exFat

You do know that exfat won't mount on a n900. So how do you suppose I do that? Instructions Please.

Shouldn't be too difficult to port exfat to N900, as the patches have been applied to N9. A kernel is just a kernel :D

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

what kernel? All I can find on getting exfat to work is fuse-exfat, but can't find any proof that it works.

I am interested too in dual booting maemo with Kali Linux, but I don't know if I have the knowledge to do this :P

For the xz file, after a little search, I found out this:
unxz file.xz

and I am doing it right now and it seems to work...(but it is really slow!)

Edit: I tried it on my pc(Kali Linux) but it didn't work:
unxz: kali-linux-1.0.5-armel.img: Write error: File too large

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

Hey guys have you tried to do this:
Install backupmenu, connect your phone with your computer via usb, make a partition on gparted of the emmc, dd the image(after extracted on the hard drive of the pc) to this partition...

I think that it works(I did it), but I don't know what am I supposed to do with uboot to get it work! What else should I do and what should I write to the .item file to get it working?

Is there a pro out there that can help us port kali linux to the n900 step by step? We really need it..
Thnx in advance

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

I have it running in chroot similar to EasyDebian by following the instructions on the Kali Linux website and mixing that with some of the EasyDebian scripts. I'm not sure what Kali Linux will give me that I don't already have on the native maemo system though...

Most of the good apps are already ported or just work already on Maemo, or the n900 is just not powerful enough to run properly anyway.

bill_klpd 2014-01-15 18:32

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

I know that it is possible to have it running in chroot, just like Backtrack....
What I/we want to do is to make it work in dual boot, with uboot or multiboot. In this way it will run faster and better(I think) in comparison with the chroot.

shawnjefferson 2014-01-16 03:06

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

Well, that will be much harder, since you will have to either get the Kali-Linux system running with the older kernel that Fremantle uses, or try to get the hardware to work completely with a 3.x version of the kernel.

At least that's my understanding of what will need to be done to truly boot a Kali Linux system and have things work.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

Just an update, I have Kali working pretty well on my n900 in chroot (using the Easy Debian scripts just modified to not interfere with Easy Debian). LXDE works well.

Metasploit works fairly well with postgresql, but the metasploit service pretty much brings the n900 to a crawl.

What about a dual boot? Have you tried anything like this? :D

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

No, and I won't... too much effort involved there for me, sorry.

But I would have to ask why? It won't speed things up appreciably... to get some speed-up over the loop mounted file system, you can actually use a specific partition with chroot instead (see the forum posts about doing that with Easy Debian.)

If you want a more recent kernel, etc... see the many forum posts about the difficulties involved with that and why it's not likely to happen anytime soon (maybe the Neo900 crew and related Fremantle Porting Crew will deliver it.)

A dual boot would use less RAM though.

Hi,I think the source you should be taken from here

True.. Maybe some enterprising soul will take that on. Was that ever done with Easy Debian with any success?

Those are the instructions I followed to make the image, and a few hints from the Easy Debian thread(s).

Please, how big is that image ? Can you share it ?
Thanks.

shawnjefferson 2014-04-23 05:26

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

It's about 5GB... I had to put it on an ext3 partition on my sdcard, as MyDocs is FAT32 which only allows 4GB files.

If you don't mind to share it i'll try to find out some place big enough to you dump it... BTW i took a look at the build process and it is a quite complex task for me. So, thats why i'm asking the img.
Thanks for your attention.
PS: As for the FAT32 issue, it wouldn't be a problem because i already have a ext3 partition on eMMC from where i'm already running EasyDebian.

can anybody give me a chroot script for kali.img, please?

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

Here's how to run Kali in a Root - Information gleaned from the Easy-Debian thread -

Construct a rootfs according to the Kali Documentation
- http://docs.kali.org/armel-armhf/kali-linux-arm-chroot
tar up your rootfs

Download both easy-chroot and easy-deb-chroot from the repos on to your N900

create a partition on your EMMC or SD card, and copy the rootfs to that partition (minus the container folder (/kali-armel/)

edit the .chroot (nano /home/user/.chroot) and delete the # before one of #IMGFILE (ex: IMGFILE=/dev/mmcblk1p3)

set the IMGFS= (whatever the Filesystem of your partition - ex. IMGFS=ext3)

set the mount point to a folder you created -
ex. I set my mount point in root to /.kali/ -
CHROOT=/.kali

save the edits in .chroot

go back out of the Terminal and click on Debian Chroot icon. The script should automatically run, and mount your image partition.

Alternately, you can use a .img instead of a partition, but I feel the partition is preferred due to not having to worry about image size.

Congratulations! Your Kali Chroot is now mounted!

Hi zeriniel,

I have a question: do I have to make my own kali image, or it is enough to download the one placed on kali website (1.0.8 armel image)?

Thanks,

jm

JM,

I couldn't get the (I used 1.0.7) Armel image to mount using either qchroot or using the Debian chroot. I think it was a file system thing. I didn't put that much work into it, because honestly, building my own rootfs just became easier. I don't recall the errors I had, and you're more than welcome to try it out. Creating your own also offers the benefit of being able to add in only the packages you want and selecting what you want your default GUI to be.

zeriniel,

thanks for your answer!
I asked this because I tried 1.0.8 and 1.0.9 beta and failed. I think the command "sudo qchroot .img /somewhere" should work - as it is working with backtrack5 and easy debian/ubuntu -, but when I try with kali it failes to mount. I do not know whether it is the img file itself, the version or the fact that I extracted the .xz on a windows machine (maybe NTFS messes things up...?).

Anyway, I shall build my own beacause of the reasons you mentioned; I only have to install kali on my PC (:

Thanks,

jm

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Kali Linux - BackTrack 6 ARM

One problem I'm having with my Kali chroot, is I can't logout from the LXDE gui. I'm sure this is something that the Easy Debian guys fixed long ago, maybe I should ask over there.

I also should package up the scripts I have for Kali, based on Easy Debian, and put the img file on dropbox or something... or hopefully someone else will get to it before I do!

Upload a minimal and compressed armel image too if possible(with only base), and yeah easy deb like scripts would be great.
