Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
Has anyone tried connecting a Windows 8 device to an N9 Wifi hotspot?
Recently, I have decided to get a Windows 8 tablet. I chose it over Android because the latter cannot connect to ad-hoc wifi (surprisingly, Asus Transformer pads can see and connect to the wifi, but not the internet). However, when I tried to connect to the wifi network created from my N9, the tablet could not connect. My 6-year-old MacBook and my sister's iPad 2 can connect without any problems, but the Windows tablet does not. Additionally, after I try to unsuccessfully connect with the Windows tablet and then connect with the iPad, the latter establishes the connection with the phone, but cannot load any pages. After a while of trying to load a website, the icon on the N9 next to the iPad changes to the idle state (the one with Zzzz's). Can anyone shed a light on this problem and help solve this issue? Thanks. |
I'm not sure about Windows 8, but i know my Windows 7 PC cannot use ad-hoc wifi.

I've read on Win8 being slightly more difficult to create ad-hoc networks so I'm sure if the tablet is a Win8 Pro not RT there must be a way to connect to ad-hoc networks via some obscure method... Not too sure if Win8 RT supports ad-hoc though I'm pretty sure just like Android devices having work-arounds to allow device to connect to ad-hoc there must be some work-around for RT too... |

Well I have succeeded in connecting Windows 8 PC to N9 Hotspot. Not sure about tablets though.
Works flawlessly with PC. |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
Ad hoc networks You cant create an ad hoc network in Windows 8 and Windows RT, but you can connect to an ad hoc network if one is in range (unless your PC is running Windows RT). There are third-party tools for creating ad hoc networks, if you need to do this.

Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
A Windows 7 laptop is able to connect to the N9. My Windows 8 tablet is able to detect the wifi signal from N9, but cannot establish the connection.

Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
Dinho,
You still haven't stated if your Win8 tablet is regular Win 8 or Win 8 RT... That would help steer discourse much better... |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
It's a Win 8 tablet, i.e. it is not an RT version.

Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
My win 8 laptop never connects to the hotsopt N9 created. This only happens on Win8.
Dispite win 8 says it can connect to ad hoc. Still no fix. |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
My friends win 8 desktop PC can connect to my N9 hotspot

There is this magic thing called google that could help. :p

Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
Of course I googled for it. It is not applicable to this situation. My windows 8 CAN connect to wifi but apart from N9 hotspot. In fact it can connect with BB10's hotspot. So N9 side it has problem as well.
I appreciate your help, but remember not everyone ask question here haven't googled for answers. |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
(1)
So was a sol'n to this ever found, Win7 works but supposedly Win8's still problematic w/ad-hoc, how to get around that? (2) Also, can anyone point to a sol'n for OSX, having some issues with that, surely ad-hoc support is built-in or available via 3rd-party sw? |
N9's hotspot doesnt is not visible on android and windows phone but visible on ios, windows 8 pc and symbian.. Anyone facing this issue???
|
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
It's probably because they don't support ad-hoc "out of the box"...
According to this thread even Win8 doesn't work, it's visible, but it doesn't actually work. *BUMP* to my post.... http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...18#post1372818 |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
this is clearly ad-hoc vs infrastrtucture hotspot issue..http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=82684

Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
I have been using my laptop to connect to the internet using my Nokia N9 hotspot successfully for a year or so.
Yesterday I upgraded the laptop from windows 8 -> 8.1 and now can't see the N9 hotspot. I've tried rolling back the laptop WiFi driver but still the same. I can still see and have used 2 other WiFi connections, but not my N9 one. (using one now!!) Does anyone have any idea's or solutions to this? |

Have downloaded a program called WeFi as a temp solution, but lots of internet talk saying it's possible malware... http://www.wefi.com/download/ |

The N9's hotspot/AP only does Ad-hoc, MBP/OSX also supports Ad-hoc (although I personally haven't been able to get it working properly). *although if you root it & install Cyanogenmod or similar, you can add ad-hoc support |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
This might be a problem with Windows 8 drivers.
It seems thδt at least Intel Centrino Wireless N2230) have issues with the drivers that came with Windows 8. My brothers Lenovo Thinkpad e530 started working with Joikuspot (sama as N9 hotspot) after he downloaded and installed Intels latest drivers: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...+2230&lang=eng |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
It may be a laptop driver problem. There appears to be issues on Windows 8 drivers to Intel Centrino Wireless N 2230.
Lenovo thinkpad e530 started working with Joikuspot (preinstalled hotspot in N9) only when installed drivers from Intel download site. |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
Good old compatibility problem... Iphone 4 cannot connect to PowerBook via BT - Android cannot connect to not androidBT - my galaxy tab 2 cannot connect to N9's hotspot either... tried both ad-hoc and the wifi-hotspot thing... so the drivers are just BSing us - we should avoid those companies at all bases! It is so frustrating with not being able to see behind the curtains of those closed operating systems... (yes I know I can root android and I am tempted!)

Right now i'm using an old laptop with windows 8, connected to the N9's hotspot, because the internet service of my home is having technical difficulties due to high winds outside :P But my new ultrabook with Blue 8.1 can't see the Wi-Fi hotspot, no idea why :( |

Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
i'm pretty sure it's Windows 8.1 that removed the functionality. Windows 8 RT just didn't support it at all. Both my surface pro and Sony laptop worked fine with the N9 hotspot running windows 8 pro. But now that I have upgraded to 8.1 with both machines, none of them can detect the network.

Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
I don't recall ever trying it while on Windows 8. Now that I upgraded to Windows 8.1, the tablet/laptop just doesn't see it. It is working on the wife's ipad (not upgraded to iOS7 yet), Windows Vista, and my Ubuntu box. IMHO, I think MS purposely gimped Windows 8.1 of this functionality.

Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
IIRC ad-hoc's considered as more-or-less a vulnerability in some circles, + it's a inferior approach when it comes to WLAN's, so maybe the legacy baggage has just been jettisoned, sadly.
Still, I'm sure there's ways around that on both Windows and OS X... |
Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
I have found this possible solution, it worked for me!
Sorry for my english!! I was having the same issue. Below is something that I found on the internet which helped me out It turns out that Windows 8.1 doesn't show ad-hoc networks and it's by design, and the hotspot created by Joikuspot is an ad-hoc network. There is a way to manually connect to that network, however. Note, this is NOT about how to create an ad-hoc network to share your Internet connection with another device! It's about how to connect your Windows 8.1 PC to an existing ad-hoc network created on another device. How to connect to an ad-hoc WiFi network in Windows 8.1. Because the wireless network picker in Windows 8.1 doesn't show ad-hoc networks, connecting must be done by hand. To see all networks in range, including ad-hoc, run this command in command shell (cmd.exe): > netsh wlan show networks SETUP This must be done only once per network. go to "Network and Sharing Center" click "Set up a new connection or network" double click "Manually connect to a wireless network" enter the SSID of the ad-hoc network (as shown by "netsh wlan show networks") into the "Network name" field configure security settings accordingly uncheck "Start this connection automatically" (important) click "Next", then "Close" Run this command (important): > netsh wlan set profileparameter <ssid> connectiontype=ibss Replace <ssid> with the SSID of your network. CONNECT After setting up, run this command whenever you want to connect: > netsh wlan connect <ssid> Replace <ssid> with the SSID of your network. Hovering over WiFi icon in system tray will show the name of the network that you are currently connected to, even if it's an ad-hoc network (the network picker will not show it if it's ad-hoc). The name is also visible in "Network and Sharing Center" window. DISCONNECT To disconnect from the ad-hoc network: connect to a different network, turn off wifi, or run this command: > netsh wlan disconnect CLEANUP To remove the network profile from Windows, run this command: > netsh wlan delete profile <ssid> Replace <ssid> with the SSID of your network. Re: Can't connect Windows 8 to N9 Hotspot
sounds like a lot of work. i've actually found a workaround for this that is much simpler.
just download the wefi app (it's free on their site). then run it, and it will show any ad-hoc networks, and you can just click on it and connect. you can leave the app open all the time and use that to connect to networks, or just close it and run it each time time want to connect to your hotspot. |
