Who 's for the rat?
Who would like XFCE for their Internet Tablet? I just wish to know if I should take the time to try and compile this...
|
Re: Who 's for the rat?
I don't actually own a IT yet, but if this works that would seriously make me want one more and make me that much more ready to do it. I'm a linux user and xfce is a clean and easy to use GUI.
I'd love to see your results. |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
Results? ^^'''
I'm just getting the first few libraries to finally compile... It'll take me quite a bit of time, but, with a bit of luck, we'll have something usable :) But, so far, KDE and a few other windows managers have been ported by Penguinbait. Type in "KDE Available" into the search function of the forums to check it out. |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
I've got PB's KDE 3.5 port and it's great. XFCE would be nice as well.
Something not as bloated as KDE but with full access to the Hildon apps (and menu) would be excellent. |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
never used it before but it looks cool, looking forward to this

Re: Who 's for the rat?
I am willing :)

Re: Who 's for the rat?
Wow... I was really hoping no would wish death on me ^^;
Small update! I'm a jackass and decided to rig the configure script so it would work with the current version of GTK2 scratchbox has... Not a good idea... So, before I can coninue compiling XFCE, I have to get GTK2 latest working, which means getting Pango and Cairo compiled... Cairo goes without a problem... but Pango... that may take some work.... I need time... and maybe a cookie... ;) |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
I'm curious as to what benefit or value you expect from setting up XFCE to run on the Nokia tablets?
|
Re: Who 's for the rat?
I think xfce on the IT is an excellent idea. I use xfce on several older machines and it's very light and as such seems a good choice for the IT. In terms of benefits/value I can think of several; it can be configured much more than the current UI can be, xfce has some nice lightweight applications like orage, thunar, xfmedia etc ...
|
Re: Who 's for the rat?
My understanding of XFCE being lightweight was that it was lightweight compared to Gnome and KDE.
When the basis for comparison is hildon, I'm not sure that description still applies. But I'm interested to find out - the XFCE port will be an indicator of hildon's success in developing an environment for embedded devices. If you just like the XFCE UI, then all the better, more power to you. But as for being lightweight, we'll see how well that holds up in the maemo world. |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
Ah, I expect it to perform very well, actually. ;)
I have KDE running on my 770. Yes, and smooth too. So... if KDE runs well enough for me to use, I am expecting XFCE to be even better. You should try Penguin's KDE, though. It's awesome. Eh, I just think it is a load more usable than hildon and that people who love to experiment with their devices will enjoy this little port. UPDATE: Cairo, Pango, Glib2, GTK2, all compiled :) Redoing all the XFCE libraries now. |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
I'd rather have a more configurable window manager than the Hildon thing right now.
ALl that wasted space on the left and top aggravates me to no end. Keep on keepin' on with XFCE and if it's compatible with Hildonized apps then I'll probably switch over. |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
WOO!
Ok! XFCE is completely compiled along with the latest GTK2 and various other libraries... Now... I just need to create a stopmaemo script :) I'd love to have people test the damned thing, so if anyone wants the tarball for alpha testing, post here! ;) |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
would like to try it.
|
Re: Who 's for the rat?
Slap that sucker online somewhere and I'll test it out.
I've got a spare 2GB SD card around here somewhere I can repartition/reformat for use. But include some idiot-proof instructions as well. ;) BTW, I want my setup to mimic the one below... http://labor-liber.org/images/linux/xfce.jpg |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
^^
Ok! When I get home, I am hoping that the tarball will be done compressing... I have no idea if my homemade scripts will work... ;) |
Re: Who 's for the rat?
****!
Major setback -_- I got home and it was done compressing... The tarball was 3 gigs... Wth? Eh, I'm workin' on it... I think it did some weird symlink inclusion thing... I don't know... I'll get it soon! Sorry bout that ^^'''' |
