Refreshing the N9 (unibody and screen replacement)
I have been thinking about doing this lately since I have been in the process of replacing my wife's Lumias shattered screen.
Her digitizer (not including lcd) was around 100 USD, CRAZY! So I was a bit scared to look and see how much the unibody and screen would cost for the N9. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I could get both for around 50 USD plus shipping!!!!!! My screen was scratch free after everyday use for 2 years, but during a football match I asked my wife (hulk hands) to hold it for me during the game, after I came off the pitch she hands it back to me and guess what I see, 2 scratches, not bad, but now they bother me to no end. The unibody was ok, but I was carrying it without the case that came with it, and it slipped while I was trying to put it in my pocket and landed on the corner near the simcard, so it took a little damage there. After always having it in the case I noticed that it started to rub and discolor parts of the unibody. So I am really starting to want to refresh the old N9. Anybody else do something similiar? |

Re: Refreshing the N9 (unibody and screen replacement)
My screen is also scratched and after replacing my Wife Lumia 800 screen I am considering doing the same to my N9. Quite keen on a white case too.

Re: Refreshing the N9 (unibody and screen replacement)
Questions about the screen and housing
My original screen looks different on the back to this one? it has small metal teeth things?do you need to dismantle anything from the original display? I have just done a white N9 conversion (more info on the white N9 thread and the shredded screw thread :) ) but was a little disappointed with my housing and the fitting of the original screen! The metal strip on the back is slightly raised around the lens. I'm not sure if i did this by over tightening the screws or if it was already like this? secondly the usb door isn't completely flush. I think its bent. and lastly the screen i have is too raised so there is a flat sharp edge whereas my old housing it was smooth from plastic to glass (edge to edge). Top to bottom is fine. I think the newer N9 has less plastic and more glass on the sides and this being more curved than the early models, really would like someone to confirm this? Has any one got a couple of N9s? ever tried swapping the screens around? If I got a more curved screen it may line up better? also wondering if screens on ebay can really be fake? surely not? it would be too hard to replicate? and get away with selling them without negative feedback? My housing for example i reckon was rejected on quality grounds? |

Unless their made in the same factory and the logo was removed? Any ideas why one screen would be completely black on the back and another with metal teeth things? |
I believe that the ones that look completely black on the back are without frame. I've read that in that case the frame has to be removed from the old screen and installed on the new one.
As I haven't done it myself yet I don't know if that's an easy and safe process or not. Maybe it would be easier to buy an lcd assembly that includes the frame and just swap the part. I'm looking for suggestions as well before buying the part and replace my broken lcd (just the glass). Thank you in advance |

And FYI, if the screen does NOT have the Nokia logo, it is definitely not legit. However, just because it has the logo doesn't make it legit either... |

if you rtry to separate the glass and the oled screen you will have a nice useless black screen. |

I'm not willing to try to replace just the gorilla glass: even if the glass of my phone is cracked and the lcd is still ok and actually I'm still using the phone anyway, I'm following with a lot of interest this discussion to try to have a feedback from the users who have already bought the complete lcd part in order to buy one for my phone as well. Despite that, it seems that some sellers are also offering just the N9 glass for around 10$, even on ebay, and on youtube there are a lot of videos showing people replacing just the gorilla glass on iphones and other phones. Apparently it seems that the glass has to be completely cracked and removed first, and that looks like a very tedious and aggressive job even if they say that the process is easier after warming the glue film (silicone?) between the lcd and the glass with an hairdryer. Even in case that this would be possible, replacing the whole part sounds definitely much more convenient to me :) |

now we are talking the same language :D the only thing that you will need (and i am almost sure that the new screen does not have it) is the proximity sensor... just put the old sensor on the new screen and that's all! check this post (in spanish) but very helpful for this issue. cheers! http://www.taringa.net/comunidades/n...comment-437316 |

i did not know about the led light... buta that depends on the type of the screen, right? |
Re: Refreshing the N9 (unibody and screen replacement)
I got my screen today! and transferred over the sensor and LED! all went well and now alongside the white housing it all sits flush again!
I had an early N9! and glad I was right here! the new screen curves in properly now! and all lines up better! I found it much hard to clip back in than the old screen which I had out a couple of times (maybe the old one had loosened? |

Re: Refreshing the N9 (unibody and screen replacement)
Just to report that last week I received the lcd screen and I've replaced it. The quality of the screen is at least the same as the stock one despite the low price paid.
The replacing process has been quite straightforward. Probably the only tricky part is to migrate the proximity sensor from the old screen to the new one. And also after connecting the two flex cables the phone was apparently dead, I couldn't turn it on anymore. I had to disconnect and reconnect the battery internally in order to have it back working again. Thank you again for your suggestion guys! |
