There isn't an official app, but there is Chromium, which is basically the same thing. Look it up in the repositories, I'm not sure in which one it is...

Re: download link for google chrome browser

possibly. because G is hunting down where its stored, and, most of the "pirate" mirrors are deleting after a given period of time.

Oh, and sorry, btw, I dont intend to be rude. But, do you really trust any other sources that have this filed ?

I dont, so, I wont provide links to any sites as is

badhon_raj 2014-08-05 17:45

Re: download link for google chrome browser

Hmm, i'm not sure whether I should trust any other source or not.
I wanted to have another good browser beside microb. Opera doesn't handle html5 sites good.
Uses way much cpu.
Also the lastpass plugin is another good reason.

Does anyone have a copy of the deb that can be trusted?

oh, is there any other good browser available?
I've tried midori, it was crashing a lot.

Please let me know if you find that deb file. Will give that a try.

Bear in mind, it was removed from repo due to patent issues !

Found liable checksum though: 1a50431a84f792466586c1976795bd29

Funny, chromium is in Debian repositories, but can't be in Maemo ones due to patent issues? I don't think so. I would guess that someone overreacted.

BTW, AFAIK the whole patent issue turned out moot, and parties (like Debian) ignoring it were proven right.

Anyway, one can use chromium via EasyDebian - not the newest one, but still far better than outdated thing from repos. Unless someone update it, I would suggest avoiding repo one - not due to "All American(tm)" software patent nonsense, but due to common sense feasibility.

thought of that but iceweasel is heavy. it takes long time to launce and render pages.
i thought chromium on easy debian would be same.
chromium 5 is running better than iceweasel. not as good as microB but usable. problem is I couldn't find any way to install extensions yet.
will try chromium on easy debian.

Amen! Show me the court ruling in your favour and then I will "cease and decist". Anything else is just giving too much power to lawyers and other parasites. All the talk in the other thread about being safe is just a load of b*ll*cks.

Sorry to get drawn into this like that. It would otherwise be a non-issue for me as I would not touch anything that Goggle has touched so one missing Chrome or three, who cares? But stupid reactions like this really ruffle my feathers.

It depends. If you as potential infringer are not sure that you're going to win then it makes sense to stop using/distributing the software -> minimizes the damages you'll have to pay.

We don't know what was in that particular version of chromium. So we cannot even speculate :)

If you're sure to win then of course you do what you want.

Since when is BSD/MIT/LGPL-licensed stuff non-free to distribute?

Is this a serious question?

OK. Let's say I write a program or produce a product which is covered by some patent. I license it as BSD, MIT, GPL or public-domain for all I care. Does that in *any* manner invalidate the patent? Obviously not.

Google is notorious for doing stuff which they license as open-source, saying "hey, it's free to use it", however ignoring any IP associated with whatever they've done (see VP8/VP9/Android/Chromium/what-not).

So they get to be known for making things "free", while the rest get to clean up the mess after them.

--
Add. for extra clarity: let's say I make a nuclear bomb and give it a free-to-distribute license. I hope you see the "issue" with it.

IP = ?

But if it's patent restricted, doesn't it violate the open source license?

Not really. The thing is that if I now write an open-source program I may not necessarily know whether I'm infringing some patent or not (or where, as patents are national).

So when I distribute the program I don't know. Until I get a letter asking me to stop. Then I have to decide if I stop or if I fight.

The decision is not necessarily a "technical" decision. It depends on who has the bigger $$$.

pichlo 2014-08-07 12:15

Re: download link for google chrome browser

Yes but in this case the fight was between entities A and B. Nokia was entity C. I would first ask A and B to fight it out between themselves before I did anything. Doing anything else was tantamount to presuming that A was right and B was wrong. Worse still, it was tantamount to publicly announcing the presumption. Things like that are even illegal in some juristictions.

Anyway, it has already happened and is not going to unhappen so all this talk is pointless. I just hope that our future councils won't be so spineless.
