Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
Seoul: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd on Wednesday launched a variant of the popular Galaxy Note smartphone with a curved display, moving a step closer to introducing wearable devices with flexible screens.
The Galaxy Round's 5.7-inch 1080p (14.4-centimetre) display has a slight horizontal curve and weighs less than the Galaxy Note 3, allowing a more comfortable grip than other flat-screen models on the market, mobile carrier SK Telecom Co Ltd said in a statement. It's 7.9mm thick and weighs 154g. Its back cover features a leather-and-stitch-inspired design, just like the Galaxy Note 3. Powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, the Galaxy Round has a 13 megapixel camera and 3GB RAM. http://static.ibnlive.in.com/ibnlive...und-091013.jpg Its Roll Effect feature enables users to check information such as date, time, missed call and battery by slightly 'rolling' the phone over towards one side when the home screen is off. When the Galaxy Round's display is off while the music player is running, a short press to the left of the device will play the previous track while a short press to the right will play the next track. Samsung Galaxy Round is available in Korea in Luxury Brown, and it will be available in more colours soon. Curved displays open up possibilities for bendable designs that could eventually transform the high-end smartphone market by allowing mobile and wearable gadgets to take new forms. LG Electronics Inc plans to introduce a smartphone with a vertically curved display in November, a source familiar with the matter said this week. Samsung's new phone, available through South Korea's biggest mobile carrier SK Telecom, costs 1.089 million won ($1,000). http://static.ibnlive.in.com/ibnlive...round-0910.jpg http://static.ibnlive.in.com/ibnlive...round-0910.jpg http://static.ibnlive.in.com/ibnlive...round-0910.jpg http://static.ibnlive.in.com/ibnlive...round-0910.jpg |

Ugly. When I read the title, I somehow imagined it curved the other way.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
The faux-leather stands out nicely here, not so well on the N3.
Alls needed now... to mold your arse into the shape of the device ! |
Re: Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
Beautiful evolution.
We are allowed to hold a round shape once again. The ergonomics of the touch screen remain to be tested to find out if this is a design gimmick or something useful for human's to love. But it seems to me that a concave display shape prevents it to rest face down on the display coating. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
Samsung announced it as LG had announced two days ago that they are already manufacturing a flexible display device. This is a "face saving" announcement from Samsung.

I wonder if flexible display will translate into flexible/moving devices.

Next step. Disc phone.
You can attach remove it and use it as a wrist watch. |

Re: Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
5,7" .... "phone"...i lol'd
its a f***** brick, not a phone...you can easily kill someone with that piece of crap still think, that this "phones" look so stupid while calling. oh i know the next revolutionary thing they could come up with: a "cool-looking-hipster-headstrap": for people with phones ~6" who cant hold that thing for some min...yeah, imagine that, you will look so cool...walking around with a headstrap while you phone somebody. at least you'll have two hands free =) i know its off-topic, but so this piece of junk is. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
@v0id,
I absolutely agree. I also prefer a phone that fits comfortably in the hand. But, to each his own. I guess that for some people, it's a single piece of equipment that replaces at least four: a phone, a PDA, a camera and a desktop computer, and those people are willing to sacrifice some comfort for convenience of another kind. The next step will be a 7" phone. No one will be able to hold that to their face so it will come with a handle at the back that will make it look like an iron. The handle will also double as a kick stand. Heck, perhaps I should patent that idea, sell it to Samsung and make a lot of dosh! |

This device has been getting surprisingly a lot of hate around the web. I think its amazing. First phone with a proper curved display and for a Samsung the device looks nice.
I would get it, if it was available here. Quote:

It's too big for me to be useful as an everyday phone, but I like the design and you can't complain about the specs. Looks premier, solid and curved like a sportscar  I'm going for Jolla either way... |
Re: Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
nothing can beat n9's curved display
ROUND!!! lol |
So it hugs your leg in your pocket? I just don't get it.
The curved glass on the N9 et al was just the glass on top of a flat display. What does curving the display do to viewing, say, a movie? Would their be viewing angle distortion? Just strange... |
Re: Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
Look at the back of it. Is that... leather? I doubt it, but it seems that Samsung is FINALLY trying to change their design. I mean really, currently all their phones look the same.
On the phone itself: why would I need curved screen? Whole 5,7 inches of it? For me perfect size is about 4.3 inch - slightly larger than N9. It seems to me Samsung tries to say "Hey, look people, we made world's first phone with curved screen, just because we can". I haven't heard anyone saying "Darn, I wish I had a phone with curved screen". It's just pointless IMO. |

Competition for Samsung: LG launches G Flex curved-screen phone
South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc unveiled a curved smartphone on Monday in a move to catch up bigger rival Samsung Electronics Co. Curved displays and flexible screens are the new battleground for phone makers as the screens open up possibilities that could eventually transform the high-end smartphone market. Curved smartphones provide a more comfortable grip than flat-screen models, but the lack of must-have features means they are unlikely to be big consumer hits anytime soon, analysts have said. Manufacturing costs also remain relatively high. Both Samsung and LG’s curved phones are only available in the South Korean market as they seek to gauge consumer appetite. Samsung launched a variant of the popular Galaxy Note earlier this month as the world’s first smartphone with a display slightly curved side to side. http://s1.firstpost.in/wp-content/up...ggflex_opt.jpg The model launched on Monday by LG Electronics has a vertically curved six-inch display. The company said the phone will be available from next month through South Korea’s three mobile carriers. Its vertically curved display offers more immersive video watching experience and the phone uses a curved battery to support its form factor, LG said. Changing form factors of the battery as well as phone’s chip board and other components remain a challenge in achieving flexible devices. LG is among a slew of smaller companies struggling to compete against Samsung and Apple Inc, the smartphone leaders that account for almost all the industry’s profits. LG reported last week an 80 billion won ($75 million) operating loss from its handset division for the third-quarter due to marketing costs surrounding a smartphone launch in August. The company plans to increase marketing investment in the current quarter to raise brand awareness in the high-end market, which it hopes will help expand sales later in the mid to lower-end segments. Technology analysts and media reports say Apple is also working on a smar****ch, potentially with a curved screen, but there has been no word from the Cupertino California-based company about its plans. |
Re: Samsung Galaxy Round: World's first curved display smartphone launched
A link would have been nice. The LG's contraption looks better than Samsung's. It's curved the more natural way. I expect problems with structural stability though. These things will start breaking like toothpicks in customers' pockets.

Boy they are late to the game.... :D
I had the Nokia "Banana phone" 8110i long long time ago, in the forgotten mists of last millenium. (I still have the device BTW, last saw it some months ago in my garage...) |
