DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Easiest util I've found so far is handbrake. Using the windows version. Google handbrake to find it.

Rather than type all the settings in here, just send me an email if your are interested and I'll send you the profile.hb file with the settings I am using.

Thanks for makling your settings available. This is a project which I shall be getting stuck into shortly and your experience should save me a lot of trial and error.

In the meantime this has come available

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Let me go another step and explain more, don't know if this helps anyone.

I am using handbrake to convert DVD video discs that were already ripped/copied , with the copy protection removed.

I use AnyDVD running in the system tray of Windows XP, then I start DVD decryptor. These two tools I use to copy all DVDs that I come into contact with. All of my copied DVD's have no copy protection, it is all stripped away.

AnyDVD can 'see' and remove the protection on the original, and DVDdecyptor rips to a 'clean' ISO image, free of protections. DVDdecryptor can then be used in write mode to create copies of the ISO file stored on hard drive. Delete the ISO file when done. This makes perfect 1 to 1 copies of the DVD without having to mess about with compression or editing.

Whenever I want to see/save a movie on the Nokia, I just put in the DVD disc (my copy, with no protection) and run Handbrake to convert

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

It's not necessary to use AnyDVD & DVDdecryptor. One or the other will do the job. AnyDVD is a device level de-CSSing tool whereas DVDdecryptor is a standalone de-CSS & file or ISO image copy tool.

AnyDVD can be used with any DVD capable media copier like Nero whereas DVDdecryptor is self contained.

Of course, it goes without saying, that either program's use should be within the legal constraints in your home country for copying copyrighted material for one's own use

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Wrong. DVD decrypter doesn't break the many of the newer DVD releases, especially if they are from Sony. I can name a couple if you want to try and you'll see what I mean.

When Sony started playing around with new copy protections , DVD decryptor choked.

DVD decrypter is no longer supported by the author, I think support/releases stopped with version 3.5.4.0

AnyDVD on the other hand is actively supported.

Now I could just use AnyDVD by itself, but I really like the ISO ripping and burning ease that DVD decryptor offers , it's small, fast , and offers DVD-DL support. Also, I have grown used to using it for ISO rips, cause it was free and works with pretty much all the DL burners.

AnyDVD breaks everything and DVD decrypter pretty much is only doing the rip to ISO for me, and the burn back to DVD-DL if I want a disc copy.

THx

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Craigy, I have been playing around with Handbrake including trying your profile.

Using my test setup your profile created a final file size of 143,374 whereas my own 'optimum' settings produce a file of 80,420. I don't see any discernable difference in quality, if anything my result might even play a little smoother.

I am happy to post a zip of my profile if you are interested in trying it?

My aim is to encode dvd's in one step, 5.7Gb dvd is now a 607Mb mp4.

Also my Handbrake files will only play on Nokia Media Player, MPlayer doesn't like them. This is a far as I have got.

The profile_Xvid.zip is attached.

A word of explanation as to what the settings are and the assumptions behind the choices.

Resolution: 400 x 240 - The ideal 1/2 of the N800 native 800 x 480 screen resolution
Container: mp4
Video: -
Encoder: Xvid - Superior to Mpeg4 and H.264 is not supported on N800
Bitrate: 512kbps – Sweet spot compromise between quality and file size
Frame Rate: Same as original (usually 25 fps) – helps maintain sound & video synching
2-Pass Encoding – Helps Handbrake to get a more accurate fix on the encoding variables.

Audio: -
Encoder: AAC – Superior to mp3, ogg vorbis is not supported by Nokia or MPlayer
Bitrate: 128 or even 160Kbps – equivalent to 190Kbps for mp3
Audio Sampling: 48khz – Highest available
Audio Track: Auto
Audio MixDown: 2 Channel – for listening through earphones

Please feel free to challenge or correct my assumptions. I find this a complex subject and much of what I have gleaned is only over the past few days and I look forward to your comments.

Nonetheless I am very pleased with the results. The only nagging doubt is that I might prefer it if the files were playable on MPlayer.

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

OK, Craigy, understand how you come to AnyDVD + DVDdecrypter use now.

Personally there hasn't been anything that DVDdecrypter hasn't worked through.

I also use other options, CloneDVD2 & DVDShrink. As my DVDrw drive only does DVD5 discs & haven't felt that it's worth buying a DL one because of the price of media. CloneDVD2 requires a CSS free readable source so AnyDVD would work if I enounter your issues.
My usage is primarily to create backup copies for my 6 & 8 yr old "cherubs" so recompression of the movie isn't a heavy consideration.

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Geez... so complicated....

Here's mine... (I had to use a Window comp, though :( )

1. Get Handbrake http://sourceforge.net/project/downl...irror=internap
2. Rip DVD with low settings (it really doesn't matter at this point)
3. Get Media Converter https://garage.maemo.org/projects/mediaconverter/
4. Convert the file Handbrake made into an even more optimized file.

My full length movies came down to 140-170 MB and they look great on my 770.

Hope it helps!

Yet another Handbrake Profile

1 Attachment(s)
Thanks for mentioning Handbrake everyone. I've been experimenting with Nero Recode (with AnyDVD), but haven't found a set of options that the N800 can play back yet.

However, a little playing with Handbrake and I've got a set of options that make very nice N800 clips.

I tried to make the clips .avi format (which seems to be a more commonly playable file container for videos), but the clips seemed broken, and were not playable on the N800 at all, so I've stuck with .MP4.

I've altered the profile that Rebski gave as follows:

Widescreen DVDs are 16:9 ratio (width:height). 400x240 is actually slightly less "widescreen" than it should be, so I've altered it to 400x224 which is closer. That means that people don't look a little too tall and skinny, and the black bars are slightly bigger at top and bottom when you play it back. Maybe a helpful video pedant can apply a little source cropping to make it match 16:9 exactly, but as I understand it you want the output height and width to be multiples of 16, so I used 400x224.

"Normal-screen" DVDs have 4:3 ratio source, and so I've included a 320x240 profile, which will fill the screen vertically, and have black bars at the sides. I haven't tested this profile but it should be fine.

In both cases I've moved the audio and video bitrates down. I can't tell the difference playing them back through the N800 with headphones (tested with a Matrix Revolutions clip).

Hope its useful,
Steven

===
Edit: In the attached profiles I dropped the video bitrate from 500 kbps to 250 kbps. I think my initial setting must have been ignored, because the test clips I made looked very good, but the files are big. It is actually pretty obvious when the bitrate is down at 250 kbps, so I think I'll stick with 500 kbps in the future!

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Thanks for your overview. I had previously made some sample videos at 400x224 but decided my priority was to fill the screen. I shall run a comparison with 400x240 to look again at the issue of the correct aspect ratio trade off with the black bars.

My experience of Video 250 bit rate was not good, so much so that the extra file size for 512 is well worth the price. 762 file size was just too big to accept for the small extra quality gain though.

As for audio settings, I want the best sound possible through my Shure E2's. The extra file size is not that much and good sound enhances the whole experience. I shall make some tests using your audio recommendations too.

This exercise has got me looking into encoding my dvd's at max quality and presently I am running comparisons between DivX Converter 6.6, Avi.Net and Handbrake. Coupled with MPlayer I am finding Handbrake to be very impressive.

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

I still claim (in my biased view) that on Mac OS X, Linux and Windows it's still easiest to type:

Code:

770-encode dvd://1 'Coupling - 01.avi'
It'd be trivial to do a GUI version, but we seem to have a glut of those.

Rebski 2007-09-04 14:01

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

aflegg, i have total CLI phobia which induces serious dyslexia . I just hated DOS.

If you felt inclined to make a GUI version then I for one would welcome it.

aflegg 2007-09-04 14:17

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

I've absolutely no inclination to do a GUI version - as I said, everyone else has done ones for their own (overcomplex, IMNSHO) converters.

Rebski 2007-09-04 20:43

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

I only asked you because you said it was trivial, personally I am very grateful to those who have put in the time and effort to give us a choice of converter apps. Far from finding them over complicated, I relish the options they offer.

FWIW I have typed the command you suggest into my Vista console and it doesn’t work.

The best result for me so far is the one I outlined previously, i.e. one stage DVD to mp4 using Handbrake. Any second stage conversion degrades my file.

Rebski 2007-09-21 10:05

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

My concern with the 2 pass process is that quality becomes degraded. The one pass Handbrake works very well but results in a file that is only playable on the Nokia Media Player and not on MPlayer.

A solution is to merge all the dvd vobs into a single .vob file using pgc.NET
http://www.clonead.co.uk/

This complete vob can then be converted using Media Converter or N800 Video Converter to an .avi which is playable by both media players.

Glitches such as unwanted audio track selection and aspect ratio problems can manifest themselves but these will be specific to each dvd. N800 Video Converter has the capability of correcting aspect ratio issues, so far for me at least.

Subtitle support would be a useful facility to have.

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Great posts. thanks everyone, especially for the info on screen widths and resolutions. I am a new 770 user. I am using DVD decryptor and AutoGK. AutoGK does a good job of adding subtitles, which I need on the train sometimes. If I use Media converter to Optimize and crop the video to fit however, the subtitles might be cut off. Anyway, AutoGK is going great and adds the subtitles for me.
So on a PC, you may have to use DVD decrpytor before you can use Handbrake. So not really a one step process.

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

I have done a minor set of experiments with Handbrake, and was able to get a video_ts folder done with DVDShrink (shrunk to 4.7Gig) down to 300Meg. Some minor artifacts, but watchable nonetheless.

I'll try to remember to post the profile.

BTW - You can change the audio encoding and it will play in MPlayer. I forget which, but AAC works in one player, and MP4 in the other.

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Novice here..

I took the profile.hb posted here and ran Handbrrake on my PC to Mp4 format. Upon completion, I uploaded to N800. Canola displayed Error. Mplayer opened but no audio and ghostly image. Mediaplayer said resolution not supported. Am I missing something?

Figured something to do with optimization and tried launching mediaconverter on my PC after running setup.exe for windows from the software website. when I start it, it said this on command prompt

javaw -jarmediaconvertor.jar
could not find main class. Progran exited.

Somone please walk me through. I really want videos to my N800. Most of my rips were created using ANYDVD. Any help appreciated.

Re: DVD videos on the N800 using Handbrake

Sorry to hear of the issues you are having. Are you aware that there is a new version of Handbrake, now, v 0.9.1?

I am not sure how much of the thread you have read but my post on page 1 is pretty detailed and that method produces good results, albeit payable only with Nokia Media Player and I have made no mention of Media Converter because it is not used.

Since then I have been trying other methods and I am currently using avi.net
http://www.clonead.co.uk/

Results are excellent and the file plays on MPlayer. Again, MediaConverter is not needed for this either.

Rebski

thanks....I just had to disable anamorphic Par checkbox and force 240x320 and now it works as an MP4 file and no choppiness...

If only the resolution is a little better, it would have been nice...Have you tried other settings?

Yes, disable anamorphic, try the settings I posted on page 1 of this thread. I think I even posted the profile for it.
