Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

The user experience thread is great but it is primarily for people who don't have a Jolla Sailfish to ask questions.

This thread is for owners to spread hints and tips.

For example what apps stores are there to compliment Jolla and the Yanex. Amazon for one but there are more. Please list any you have found.

Also one i would like to know is a way of syncing contacts from the N9. I have an N900 at work so maybe I could use that.... in a convoluted manner.

Recommended apps may be best for a separate thread?

Actually, you may want to maintain a list of categories (organisers, IM, social, etc.) in your OP and list whatever is recommended, especially for those categories where Sailfish hasn't filled the gap yet. That'd be extremely useful for those who want to start quickly with the device.

E.g., I read that whatsapp and line work fine.

Syncing contacts from n9:

1. pair jolla and n9 with Bluetooth
2. use the n9 sync app to send contacts to jolla

Syncing contacts from OSX:
Contacts > click on All Contacts > File > Export > Export vCard > Then send the vCard to your paired Jolla device via Bluetooth.

Aptoide is another good alternative app store. http://m.aptoide.com/installer?lang=AR

Sideloading .apk files is easy. Send the file to your device via bluetooth. Don't forget to click on Accept. Next go to System Settings > Transfers > Clicking on your file installs it in a second.

You can also install APKs by first installing OI File Manager (for instance from Yandex.store), and then browsing to the folder that has APK, and then clicking the APK-file.

Amazon store apk-file can be downloaded here:

You would think wouldn't you. Pairs some but none with Facebook entries it seems. Tried removing jolla Facebook account but still no joy, then also tried individual names to little success. I think it has a lot to do with the Facebook integration on the N9 as it won't sync with my Android tablet either.

Seriously? Why store SMS??..?..?...?.

It like storing every receipt you ever got.

Nothing wrong with that. Just a bit odd ;)

Aptoide was hinted to me by a DNA employee, doesn´t require registration.

I managed to sync my contacts using the same advice as below.

Re: Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

I would advise people to get a mail.yandex.com account before their device arrives. Some people had issues signing up using their phone numbers on first launch. Logging in with an existing Yandex account eliminates the need for a phone number. The same goes for getting an Amazon account before installing the Amazon Appstore.

Re: Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

Old ad-blocking methods apply on Jolla:

Get a hosts-file. Check that it does not contain anything fishy.

Enable dev mode. Set SSH server on and type the password.

In terminal type:
devel-su (the password was set in the SSH server configuration of DEV mode)

Backup and replace these files:
/etc/hosts
/system/etc/hosts
/opt/alien/system/etc/hosts

First is what Sailfish uses, the latter ones for Android.

Before replacing files it may be wise to add the original hosts file lines to the top of the ad servers blocking host file.

EDIT: Added /opt/alien/system/etc/hosts path. Seemed to help to get rid of the ad banner with Foreca app. Plain /system/etc/hosts helped with the Firefox. Hint for the alien dalvik path from the google apps installation instructions.

Re: Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

Success, I imported all my contacts from my N900. The transfer from the N9 did not work on Jolla or my Android tablet. I can only guess it is something to do with how the facebook/twitter integration in the contact lists works. Any contact without social links would work and those with ONLY social links would work, but merged or subsequently edited contacts (the majority of my address book) would not.

Could you elaborate on this?

I have not noticed any problems. All contacts, facebook integrated or not, were added from my N9. The new phonebook seems a bit more "simpler" than that of N9 or N900, but seems to work ok.

Not sure I can Boxeri

I did have a lot of issues with my N9 address book which was forever unmerging and losing contacts. I think because many of the contacts were a 3 way or more, merge from my N900 (which used Hermes), plus Linked in and then add twitter and Nokia Contacts sync to that lot and it gets a bit of a mess. So now i have a fresh start and all looks promising.

Can't we sync contacts via CardDAV and calendar via CalDAV rather than bluetooth? Or are those protocols not supported yet?

Not at this point, it's documented in this FAQ: http://piratepad.net/ep/pad/view/ro.MLba1kXW2/latest

Re: Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

TIP for Finnish Jolla users. Might of course work for others as well.

The android comparability layer is so well build, that it can "fool" even banking applications. Osuuspankki Pivo-lompakko and their OP-Mobiili both work on Jolla device. I once tried this with Bluestacks and that didn't work. But as said this does in Jolla. I didn't want to draw the APK's from any site or unofficial store because of being afraid of risking some really sensitive information. So i installed the applications on my Android phone from Play store and then draw the APK from it to my computer and then transfered it to my Jolla. This method that has already pointed out works like a charm on this as well and you can be sure that the APK has nothing "added".

Yes that works, if you trust Play store and Google. Do you?

Now the question is who to trust more? Google or Yandex?
Google accepts anything into its Play Store and only pulls stuff if it gets reported. Yandex OTOH virus-checks everything before it enters the store.
Yandex is a russian company that is seeking to get recognized globally. Google OTOH is probably NSA's no. 1 source of information.

Excellent points! This time I was referring only to the idea of getting the APK as directly as possible from the developer.

In general what actually do people think as the best source of APK's? Yandex the number one to go?

I have now Yandex, Amazon, F-droid and Aptoide installed.

Amazon stopped working for some reason after installing an application through it and only shows blank page upon launch...

Aptoide seems to have best selection of apps from remaining three. (Even offers to updates to some apps installed through other stores)

Re: Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

Hey guys!

I have been using this phone for quite a bit today, mainly trying to learn its secrets and whatnot. I have also spent quite a while in android appstores yandex and 1mobile market.

I noticed that most of apps I downloaded from 1mobile market, don't work on jolla. Even tough they were featured and most downloaded apps (games mostly).

Firefox works beautifully even supports landscape, so I'm going to use that as a default browser until the we get an update for the native browser :)

most games don't work at all and some apps work just and just. as an example Whatsapp doesn't show any names in the contacts, just phonenumbers and push notifications dont work either. Only when it's open, the lockscreen gets an icon when receiving a msg, but it still doesn't notificate by sound or vibration. Anyone else got this problem?

Other than that I've been stunned at how great this phone works even tough it's their first and just out.

wanted to add here that I just downloaded ooklas speedtest app. from 1mobile and it gives following figures from 3g ping 42ms dload 20.04 uload 2.29

operator says max 21mbit/s so I'm more than satisfied how Jphone handles :)

I had quite a bunch: asphalt 8, despicable me (I believe thats the minion rush), the mansion: a puzzle remains, ducktales: scrooges loot, redline rush. These atleast and I didn't get even one of them to work for some reason. As soon as I started them they just close themselves or report an error "application has to close etc."

Angry birds, fruit ninja and drag racing do work so I am kind of confused as to why?

ok edited

I uninstalled the 1mobile appstore and switched to amazon, so far CSR racing game and minion rush works, so it might have something to do with the 1mobile appstore. Have to uninstall whatsapp and download it again from amazon to see if it works fully that way. So if anyone else is having problems with android games or apps not working, try downloading it from a different store. Don't know how thats any different, one would think its the same apk. file but guess not.

Amazon have not only review process but also submission costs a bit more, so better quality apps are to be expected (no single button fart apps from play, 85k vs 1 mil tells quite a lot about percentage of worthwhile apps)

Here are some good open source Android apps I've installed from the F-Droid app store.

K-9 Mail: Simple setup, works with IMAP, POP3 and Exchange 2003/2007 (with WebDAV) accounts.
RedReader: A really good Reddit client
AntennaPod: In the absence of Gpodder thus far, I've found a podcast client that searches the gpodder.net directory and accepts opml imports of your existing subscriptions.

Tip: If you issue halt from terminal and have trouble starting the phone:
  1. take the battery out
  2. wait a moment
  3. put the phone back together
  4. press the power button

IIRC the preferred commands with systemd are "poweroff" and "reboot". The "halt" command is basically useless.

Tsippaduida 2013-12-06 18:06

Re: Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

You are correct. Halt is useless as it shuts everything down in Jolla. The phone plays brick until you give some air to the battery. It might be of some use for e.g. hardware development if the low level functions have to be shut down,

By the way, poweroff says "Must be root", but works anyway. Reboot just works, phone asks pin code and locking code on start-up (if you have them).

Re: Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

Would this be a good thread for reviews and conversation about accessories for Jolla, or should there be another thread for accessories? Like which headphones work with the phone and what kind of pouch it would fit.

Re: Jolla Owners hints and tips and app sites

Tip: I found that the screen protector for Nokia Lumia 1020 (made by panzer if it matters) has a perfect width for Jolla device, height needs a little DIY clipping to avoid it being over the camera & speaker (don't know if it even matters but I still clipped), and it doesn't cover the whole bezel on the whole screen height, 2mm from both to upper and lower bezel are left uncovered, an area that at least doesn't irritate me at all.

Strange that the URL address found on the package doesn't work...
EDIT: Oh, the link needs www to work. Thanks Stskeeps.

PS: @ hana, strictly speaking, all software-related discussion of Jolla phone's software belongs in SailfishOS subforum and all discussion directly related to the phone itself (like hardware extensions, accessories, etc) belongs here. Maybe even this thread. Not that I mind them both on being bundled in this thread, but it might prove to be problematic in the future when this thread gets more posts... Also this should be looked at in case by case basis, sometimes Hw & Sw sections of the topic are so much overlapping it'd be unpractical the separate the two aspects in their own topic.
