tar: invalid tar magic
Command exited with non-zero status 1
real 0m 0.02
user 0m 0.00s
sys 0m 0.00s
/home/user/MyDocs

Step W - Install Sailfish using only Windows (thanks mikecomputing)
Wa - Download Sailfish image of choice
Wb - Boot into Harmattan (and install developer mode if you haven't already) and connect the phone as "Mass Storage Device"
Wc - Copy souren_sailfish_n950_20131208.tar.bz2 to the root of your MMC.
Wd - Disconnect the phone from the PC.
We - Launch Terminal on Harmattan (or SSH in)
devel-su
rootme #or your root pass
cd /home/user/MyDocs/
ls
# you should see all your MyDocs and souren_sailfish_n950_20131208.tar.bz2

mkdir /sailfish
mount /dev/mmcblk0p4 /sailfish
time tar --numeric-owner -xvf souren_sailfish_n950_20131208.tar.bz2 -C /sailfish/
# this will take a while as its extracting on the handset
# now exit out or jump to Enable root SSH access on Sailfish, starting at "mount -o bind /proc /sailfish/proc"

man tar may help.

The correct (minimal) set of options is xjf (the file comes after hte f).

"v" is for verbose.

no, lol. try to rename image.png to music.mp3 and try to listen it :D
just stop it. current sailfish builds and methods not for you. even if (with god's help) you successfully install it you will continue asking "how to install XXX", "why YYY not working and etc" :D

p.s. original instruction have explanation about bz2 archive. try to read it carefully ;)

I find it easiest to bunzip2 the archive on PC before transferring to device... unless, of course I did wget it straight in the device in the first place :D

Re: Nokia N9 Sailfish OS How to make partition?

Sorry guys, the original image was not a bz2 so was just tar hence why just xvf and not xvjf.
Have updated it to souran's latest version and made sure all are .bz2 and xvjf!

Re: Nokia N9 Sailfish OS How to make partition?

Hi all,

Somebody know how to revert to the N9 16GB default partitions?

I installed Jolla and now I want to revert back to the default settings and I have an error with flasher:
mmc: Partition table mismatch (start=18464768, sum=10272768). You may want to use the no-preserve option or flash an erase image.
mmc: Could not remove mount directory /tmp/sudmmcOmMAzG/mnt: No such file or directory
[Pipe 4] Finishing in error state with status 1

I already search the forum but i did not find anything related to reverting the phone to the default partitions... :(

Thank you very much!

There's the solution right there in the error message for you, if you just read it :D
Just do what it says:
sudo flasher -F emmc.bin -F firmware.bin --no-preserve -f -R

Show me how your partitions are right now.

Else see above #17 but be aware you will loose all and get back to default closed mode!

Re: Nokia N9 Sailfish OS How to make partition?

Hey guys i need help here. I have a Nokia N9 16GB and managed somehow to install Sailfish OS in a third partition. Then i tried to resize the partition since the sailfish partition was only 2GB, so i shrinked the other two partitions with gparted and leave like 12GB for Sailfish, but now when i choose Sailfish, it says it cannot find the kernel and do a maintainance reboot. I only changed the sizes, not the order or name but i tried flaging as bootable some partitions with no succsess. Is there any partition thaht have to be flagged as bootable? Whay can i do? I read somewhere that the beginning partition sector if changed, it will fail. Is there a solution for this? maybe a default partition scheme and at least recover the original meego inside? I have the mail.bin, flasher and stuff, but i really do not know what to do and i have a bricked N9 otherwise.

Please help.

Can you boot to Harmattan normally?
If so, check your ubiboot log (/home/user/MyDocs/boot/ubiboot.log) to see what's the problem.

Re: Nokia N9 Sailfish OS How to make partition?

Some updates

1) The phone does not boot into meego, that's totally fine because i fall completely in love with Sailfish

2) The phoen does boots into Sailfish OS with no trouble

But there are a couple of drawbacks that i need help with

a) I have no USB connection to the PC (debian Linux) so i have to transfer files through the telnet mode with the phone plugged at startup

b) I transfered some gigs of music in the /home/user folder but the music app does not refresh the library although the files are shown in the Sailfish terminal. File/folder permissions? What is the media folder to store mp3?

c) The 8MP camera is not working at all, it shows a stucked image half wallpaper/half camera controls, no buttons responding whatsoever.

d) Cannot download any app from the Jolla Store. Any trick there?

Any ideas? I totally can live without the camera but not without the mp3 man.

Some overall comments

1) keyboard is not shown when spanish input languaje is selected so cannot write Wifi's password and stuff
2) interaction is sometimes choppy but can live with that
3) When muting sounds and re-enabeling sounds, sounds don't come back at all, phone still muted, a reboot fix this
4) I miss the option for remove the text suggestion which i believe slows down a bit the rapid keyboard writing
5) When starting sms, most of the times have to execute 2 times because the first will crash, but then is starts ok.
6) Calls are ok, wifi ok, browser ok, even the battery life is better??

Thanks i really need to be able to listen to my mp3!

Is there anyway to completely remove Meego and stick with Sailfish forever in a single or minimum number of partitions?

Is there any site where i can be keeping posted of new sailfish developmente versions to try out for my N9? There are so many maemo forum pages that sometimes i get lost.

Sailfish totally blows my brains out, please help.

You know, the problem was that the phone was completely discharged so it was like dead. I managed to recharge it a bit with flasher doing flashing attempts (but no actually flashing anything) and then the phone booted up sailfish. Meego does not boot at all. The phone simply stays display off, no signs of booting process, no vibration, no white led... no nothing. Then yo have to press the lock like for 10 seconds for a reboot. Weird. Any ideas?

Your log looks perfectly good to me, the part about not mounting devices 4...7 is OK since that ony applies for people who have larger number of partitions. (unless you DO have partion 4, which you well should have if you have Nemo or Sailfish installed...)

As for booting the device, I can see from your log that the booting kernels are found correctly:
Feb 16 06:56:37 (none) user.notice root: Loading kernel /boot/Harmattan/boot/zImage_2.6.32.54-openmode_l2fix
Feb 16 06:59:03 (none) user.notice root: Loading kernel /boot/Sailfish/boot/bzImage

Now there's one thing I do not understand, where is the device loading the Sailfish kernel from since you do not have partition 4?
Do you have some nonstandard system in place? Or have you replaced your Harmattan on mmcblk0p2 with Sailfish?
And if you have, then where is it loading your Harmattan kernel from??

Could you show me your ubiboot.conf, have you made some mofification there?
Further on, if you have problem with booting Harmattan, are your preinit files correctly installed? Usually when kernel is loaded correctly but device hangs with black screen, the reason is missing/corrupted/permissions of /sbin/preinit_harmattan file.

I always had 3 partitions and i always thaught there were 3 partitions, one for each OS (Meego and sailfish) and the Meego's Nokia N9 partition. I followed this how to and i think maybe the 4rth partition was not created. Now i reflashed the Harmattan stock flash and lost the bootloader and cannot boot sailfish anymore. I was ale to use flasher to launch the moslo kernel and initrd but when it tries to load the 3 partitions and poup up as mass storage, it fails and prompt to the telnet green screen.

I would like to have a sailfish with a working mp3 player and wifi tethering or if this is not working yet, go back to meego, if it's possible, repartitiones for saving space. I used this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ugb4vosobg
Tell me, is this a correct guide?

Re: Nokia N9 Sailfish OS How to make partition?

I'm trying to follow this to do a repartitioning, mounting and resize with gparted, but the N9 stucks on the warning advice and no further going. Now it boots fine in MeeGo, but i'm missing the 10gb partition that i made for sailfish in my first post. How do i recover that space? Is there any partition reset script or tool maybe using flasher?

Thanks,

When you have just Harmattan (like original, freshly flahed system), your partition layout is like this:
mmcblk0p1 - MyDocs (fat)
mmcblk0p2 - root (ext4)
mmcblk0p3 - home (ext4)

When you install Sailfish, you need to have partition layout like this:
mmcblk0p1 - MyDocs (fat)
mmcblk0p4 - ALT_OS (ext4)
mmcblk0p2 - root (ext4)
mmcblk0p3 - home (ext4)

(note that physically your mmcblk0p4 is "in the wrong place" as it is carved out from your mmcblk0p1 but logically it does not matter...)

Now, the whole business in the guide about the MOSLO boot and partitioning is to create the ALT_OS partition, mmcblk0p4.
If you do not have that, you have not followed through the guide correctly, and most possibly have now messed up your device completely.

Yes, then you need to start fresh, first by flashing your device to clean Harmattan.

So what exactly happened, do you get any partitions to show on your linux computer?
What exactly does the green text say?

One very common cause of MOSLO partitioning failure is that you do not have enough free space on your mmcblk0p1.
For best results, backup all your data you have on MyDocs, and then empty it before partitioning.

I don't know about that, I think video guides are not good way to do things.
The correct guide should be this: http://wiki.maemo.org/Ubiboot

Yeah, guess i'm a lucky guy, my phone doesn't got bricked. I managed to boot the ubiboot image and reformatted the N9 in 3 partitions and went back to stock MeeGo, the thing is that it does reformat the drive so any changes/resizes i do in partitions they got deleted too.

I would like to have like
12gb Nokia N9
2gb /
1gb /home

since i do not have many apps installed, mostly a chroot debian with a big img file and a bunch of mp3 files, so the larger the partition, the better for me.

My nokia N9 defaulted partitions are now

8.4gb or so Nokia N9
4gb /
2gb /home

right? Anyway to change this? I think i could boot up ubiboot again in telnet mode and resize with gparted, but i did that and then Meego has all the info on free storage wrong, it says "total space, 19.5gb" or so, that is not true, so i went back to original.

I need the wifi tethering to be working on sailfish to be able to migrate. Is that working? because i could not install any app from the Jolla store. I use tethering to connect to my laptop so is a life or dead must app. And another question, is there anyway to install Sailfish as the ONLY OS in the phone? like flashing the stock meego binary? would like toi have that if wifi tethering is working.

So i'm finally back to stock meego

Thanks,

Yes, that is the way to do it.
First, flash to stock Harmattan open mode, then boot to ubiboot console, back up all partitions to external Linux computer (as tar files), then repartition as you like, reformat and restore from the tar files.
That is how I have done it, and I have 6 partitions on my N9.

A very good question, I really do not know if the Jolla-version of terhering app works with N9, as the HW is different. If the application does not do anything too deep (as it should not need to do, really) then it should work OK.
However, 3G/WIFI tethering is easy to do also without any appication, you just need to fire up wpasupplicant and set a few rules in iptables.

Sure it is possible, there are at least 2 ways to do it;
  • 1. You can just repartition the device like you want, and use ubiboot to launch Sailfish.
  • 2. You can compile your kernel with static boot parameters (at least root partition and framebuffer is needed) and flash it as default boot kernel.

Re: Nokia N9 Sailfish OS How to make partition?

Now this is what happens. I can sucsessfully flash stock MeeGo and everything os perfectly ok, now, after that when i tru to flash the openmode kernel it fails with the error i paste down. It says the device is locked. I read that can be causeb by a bad bin image, but it is perfectly fine and i did it many times with the same files, even when i installed Sailfish OS:

any ideas?

Re: Nokia N9 Sailfish OS How to make partition?

Did you set the device lock on (security code to lock the device)?
You cannot enter Open Mode with securiy code set, you need to remove it first.
There exists a modification of device locking that you can use in Open Mode, but you need to install that afterwards...
