Broken Screen Am I the first one

Screen cracked across the top single curved line just above the usable area and a small crack to the ear speaker.
No sign of damage or dropping, bit puzzling, first broken screen ever in over 20years of mobile devices.

Sorry, I´ll claim that title. =) I cracked my screen two weeks ago, almost all of the screen splintered. First time for me too. I had it repaired, took it to DNA on Monday afternoon and got it back on Thursday. Quite fast, I would say. Cost 210€.

I got the broken screen back as well and I can post a picture of the backside of it if there are some who are interested.

Holy crap that's expensive!

We all knew this would be very expensive. Small company, not many screens produced, Chinesse won't make a cheaper replacement. Better not to drop your Jolla or bend in your pocket.

Dropped mine today (stupid idea to make a call while riding a bike).

It made a couple of somersaults against the asphalt before it finally came to a halt.
No problems except a small dent on the OtherHalf and some scratches on the screen.

As always when you throw your phone into the ground - one has to make sure it lands on the strong edge :)

Hmm, so now what's really the advantage of capatitive touch screen? I thought that gorilla glass is supposed to be scratch & crack resistant. Now it seems to be only marketing words and in fact it's just fragile glass. So I've spent my money on something I'll be afraid to put in my pocket? There seems to be something wrong...

Re: Broken Screen Am I the first one

Gorilla Glass is scratch-resistant in that it's harder than metal (sand, which is even harder, can still scratch it, though).
But it's not crack-resistant. AFAIK the glass is put under extremely high pressure to make it that hard, which under some circumstances can produce cracks.
Ever seen an iPhone screen shatter to a thousand pieces? Yes, that's Gorilla Glass.

Sorry, I'll claim that title. Broke mine 4 days after receiving the phone.

13.12.2013 around 2 PM I dropped my steel credit card wallet on top of Jolla's screen from 10 centimeter.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...09416352_n.jpg

And 210 euros later I got my Jolla back from OptimaService. I also got the broken screen back. Apparently they had to change everything. Screen, touch elements and the gorilla glass.

It made me wonder tough that why did the glass cracked that easily? Now that I know how expensive the screen replacement is I purchased Insmat screen cover. Even it's not protecting against hits, but I don't want to scratch the screen either with sand, keys etc.

Sounds like a lot of bad luck or the screen is of bad quality. Gorilla glass 2 should be quite durable though

After seeing a tweet back in December of someone who dropped their Jolla and the screen cracked I bought an insurance for my Jolla right away. Hopefully I'll never need to use it

Re: Broken Screen Am I the first one

I'd say the screen is of normal durability these days. It's 4.5" and in Hount's case, the impact zone was very small, so that's what I would expect. Days of indestructible glass on n8 are gone. My friends SGS4 cracked in his pocked, my friends SGS4active cracked falling down 30cm, my friends Iphone5 cracked(no one knows what happened). I guess we just have to accept that screens are not as durable as they were 2" smaller.

Gorilla is just marketing ********, made by Apple, only *****s beleive in such stuff. I broke my n9 first month I got it. I hope I dont break my Jolla. But as I am often drops things on floor , already droped Jolla twice :( I should be more carefully if the price is that high...

Jolla should definitely be more 'sticky', I dropped it like a million times while sitting and it fall on my legs now I'm just waiting for the time it lands on the ground.

I think, Dragontrail screen is way more better, although it is slightly easier to get scratched, maybe? http://m.fastcompany.com/1719138/dra...ugh-glass-game

210€ is very high, maybe is it better to buy a new phone, because you have

- new screen
- new second batterie
- new TOH Cover
- new Charger + USB cable
- new PCB and spare Parts like microphone, headspeaker, kamera and and and.
- and dont forget... a new Jolla Package :D

I don't think I've ever seen an iPhone 4 with an intact screen...

Re: Broken Screen Am I the first one

a friend once dropped his SGS3 and cracked the screen... turned out you have to buy the a combi of screen, glass and electronics which costs 130€ - if you change it yourself... so 210 incl. labour sounds reasonable...

it's todays devices... mostly screen and glass are glued together so no dust sneeks under... downside is, you can't just change the glass...

also, gorilla glass really is quite durable... you need to take into account the thickness of that glass and the surface area... it is quite durable against scratches and impacts, but it's not unbreakable... the jolla is quite heavy and depending on the angle of impact, it might bend... if it bends too much, the glass will crack...

gravity sucks! :p

Gorilla Glass may or may not be a gimmick, but the hype doesn't come from Apple. Apple uses some kind of hardened glass in their products but they have not disclosed who makes it. Gorilla Glass isn't shatter resistant. It resists scratching.

Re: Broken Screen Am I the first one

The price is typical for an official service like Optima. Independent repair shops are usually cheaper if they can get spare parts, for Jolla they can't at the moment. But probably it would still be over 100€ for 4.5" IPS screen. As we can see from Huoltokukko's rates, the price depends heavily on the size and type of display.

It was Steve Jobs himself who used his reality distortion field to convince Corning they can make this incredible glass, at least according to Jobs' biography. And it's been confirmed that Corning is major supplier for Apple.

But Corning isn't bad at hyping their own products. Here's a video about Gorilla Glass 2 used in Jolla :)

Insurance company talked me out of purchasing new Jolla by paying 120 € for the repair. I still had to pay 90 € for that little accident.

Now that I've seen this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT8xI4PEU8c I'm even more confident that my small credit card wallet should not had broken the screen. There must have been some tensions left from manufacturing processes.

Hah! Problem is that you would have to attach cats at various points/angles, since there are so many different ways to damage a device by dropping it.

My wife dropped her iPhone 4 corner-first onto the corner of a table from a height of about 10cm, which meant I had to go to the Apple Store and talk to a Apple Genius.

I do not like the Apple Store. I also confirmed my suspicion that - at least in the case of the 'gentleman' I spoke to - the title "Genius" is not deserved.

I've had the misfortune to drive over my Jolla. That is a properly cracked screen :D
Device still booted though and it returned Thurs just in time for Update 5. The repairers even sent back the broken screen for some reason.

Yes I've got the same thing. Noticable during boot and updates where the screen is black but on.

I had about twenty hot pixels in the lower right portion of the screen. Sent the phone to the Optima Service, got it home after four days with a new screen.
