[Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

The public repository is here: https://github.com/sailfishos/sailfish-browser

We intend to work as open as possible and hope to get contributors and get a chance to get our embedding code now more easily accepted to Mozilla upstream.

How will that work with UI code? Will you accept patches there too?

Re: [Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

If they don't you can always make your own branch

Preferred way is first file an issue to issue tracker to discuss and review the the idea that you want to do.

Byt yes, we will allow pull requests also to UI side of code, but those pull requests needs to be approved by our designers. Thats why its better first file issue to issue tracker to discuss the changes. Ie. to avoid possible disapointments that you make a huge pull request just to be rejected if it conflicts the design documentation (which will also be available soonish https://github.com/sailfishos/sailfish-browser/issues/2).

Re: [Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

Thanks Jolla! I hope the trend will continue for other core applications as well. This helps promoting trust which is a key for browser, e-mail, instant messaging and other communication tools.

coderus 2014-02-11 17:17

Re: [Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

@shmerl browser became opensoource because of Gecko license :)
core applications won't be opensoured, i think.

shmerl 2014-02-11 17:32

Re: [Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

Not really. The UI is bound with Gecko in such way (IPC) that the license doesn't affect it (unless I'm mistaken). So it's a gesture of good will. Jolla phrased it this way:

Quote:

Our objective is to make this the first step to get official support from Mozilla Corp. to a mobile browser based on Gecko and embedded in Qt.
https://joindiaspora.com/posts/3630622

And I expect them to open other applications, primarily all communication ones which are critical from privacy perspective.

warehouse does that when enabling repos, so, thats def. not the issue.
But, I think I have seen this happen with some of my packages also.
Not really an issue (for me, I usually install from terminal)

Wow, Andrey big thanks for this !!!

One little bug that I found, when I copying text from the page and want to paste for example to Note app, I see the icon for paste, and it work without any problem but it not show text in the same line of the icon...

EDIT: My mistake, it somehow copied empty line too, this is a reason that text not shown in paste line :D

2 requests if it possible:
1. Please add more options for SHARE like Mitakuuluu..
2. Please add folder Downloads or another options for uploading files if it possible (for now it have only Documents, music, images, videos)

THANKS!

After deinstallation of the nightly browser (via warehouse) and when trying to get a browser back it says: missing xulrunner-qt5 >=29.0.2.7

Can someone provide a way to get the native browser back, with or without the nightly version?

Edit: pkcon install sailfish-browser :)

Re: [Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

Re: [Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

why package is named sailfish-browser-sertting in openrepos? Is that why it wont install?

Makeclick 2014-06-20 13:08

Re: [Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

yes. long press and you should see 2 balls :). You can drag them around.

Re: [Announce] Sailfish Browser is now Open Source!

The sailfish (the fastest fish, 68 mph) is speedier in the water than the cheetah (the fastest land animal, 62 mph) is on land. However, in a Phone sailfish is pretty slow. Anyway to speed it up in browser? Overclock only option?
