Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
MWC is getting nearer and we have had some rumours/tweets on new features that are to be presented in Barcelona. Some more information in this news article (in Finnish) titled:
Jolla has high hopes for Barcelona - "News are on their way" http://www.tekniikkatalous.fi/ict/jo...saquot/a966903 Summary: -New features (as expected) and some more information on TOH -Jolla have 100 squaremeters of space, ~20 people from executives and sales, a big investment says CEO Pienimäki -They are meeting operators and other partners, no deals expected to be made but they are starting the conversations -They have shipped the pre-orders in Finland, some tens of thousands (not quite clear whether this includes all the pre-orders or just those from Finland). Next up is Portugal, webstore is of course already open. -Expectations on China have been toned down a bit, it requires localisation and volume. -Their goal is to sell several hundreds of thousands of phones this year. -The next phone is being designed, but right now they want to concentrate on launching the first device. The launch of the second device will most likely be during 2015. -They are trying to improve the OS and apps so that the platform would raise interest among the other manufacturers. -As they are using the same components as Android phones, they are able to order more devices fast. -There is a interest towards Jolla due to Android and WP are seen as less trustworthy due to NSA. -They employ around 90 people at the moment, looking for mostly some exceptional talents although they get a huge amount of applications all the time. So, what features do you expect them to present in MWC? Something that has been discussed/requested in jolla.together? Something totally unexpected? |
Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
Really disapointing interview.
Seems like they haven't really advanced at all on the business side of things since they annouced the DNA deal long long time ago. Release in China seems to be cancelled, so its more of a backward movement. |

Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
Unfortunately their failures in China were quite apparent past 6 months thinking what they had talked yearly last year. Europe was their home market, but China was the wild card volume market. That's what I always got out of their talks.
Possible set backs with D.Phone because of he delay? Who knows. It's a market they absolutely need. I just can't see them selling anywhere near their projected sales this year with Europe being the main market. Whatever the reason was to delay next phone till next year, that's probably the right thing to do. |
Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
No point in releasing new phone until they can sell it somewhere.

Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
New device in 2015? That's something, but quite a long wait still.

Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
they have limited resources and they are fighting against behemoths. they have to prioritize how they attack the market. we don't know the full inside story so cut them some slack and show them as much support as you can if you like Sailfish and Jolla.

Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
I'm glad to support them, but I hope they won't leave their potential users out until 2015. I.e. I'll support them with buying the device when I'll be able to use it on my network with 3G or LTE. Other than that I support them in different ways.

No point having a company that don't Sell anything so let's say we have to wait until mid 2015. Who is paying the salaries? Who is wasting money in the company at the moment? |

Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
I hope they show Sailfish OS running on high end tablets and phones from generic Chinese manufacturers just to demonstrate the potential that's there.
Anyone who expects big name Android manufacturers to put out a Sailfish device are living in dream world. The best hope is a generic manufacturer who hasn't signed up to the Open Handset Alliance to take a chance with them. Google will never allow the OHA partners to put out a device that does what Jolla does with Android. |
Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
It's really disappointing that they delay the release of the phone in China.
I really hope I can type traditional Chinese with Jolla, but so far no details about the update :( |
Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
tens of tousands devices sold? I REALLY doubt.
10 000 as total is my guess... I do beleive in Jolla engineers but I do beleive Jolla has big trouble if they don't start sell more device to the operators right now! Now they probadly draining money very fast. Its cost have employed people and also if they have lot of warranty issues they drain even faster. Now that is the only reason to not be fast with operators. Since they get chance to get rid of nasty bugs in HW/SW but at the same time... Anyway, I really hope they have big plans for MWC 2014 and get alot good attention because they need and deserves get more attention. |
Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
they can run their OS on Android hardware as they said. this is the strategy to allow them easier entry into the market with high end hardware.
the problem they face now is polishing the OS. the first set of Jolla Phones have been released for this specific purpose - to polish the OS and build more native apps. i just hope they have enough cash to pull it through. :( |
Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
I really think they are aiming for those Android devices mentioned at the hardware adaption wiki. Nexus 7 and 4, Samsung S3. Those are the most common devices amongst the people who have accustomed for changing roms, and they are eager to try something new. Every android hacker in XDA-developers has one of those devices (and plenty of others too in the drawer so they can spare one).
This means that they'll have a chance grow the Sailfish OS user base exponentially in a single night. This is brick and mortar of their business no matter what they are planning to do in the future. Currently there is a gap in the device ecosystem that was left by HTC. What happened to HTC was that they lost their wind as a hacker device manufacturer. They did it plain stupidity by locking their bootloaders, if only for a brief time. They didn't realize what they had in their hands: Number 1 status amongst the Android community of forerunners that eagerly give their views and opinions to anyone who is interested about getting a new phone. Now HTC has to compete with the big players without any special advantage, and is losing it badly. |
Re: Jolla & Sailfish in MWC 2014
Good* news for me and other Estonians - Jolla is arriving to Estonia. It is presented to the public on 28th of April. Phone is going to be sold by mobile phone operator Elisa.
News article in Estonian: http://www.aripaev.ee/article/2014/4...jouab-eestisse *Hopefully it makes all Jolla repair and accesory purchase related matters easier/cheaper and faster for us. |

Yes. Among top 3 as we only have 3 operators... :)
Market shares: EMT (owner: TeliaSonera, Swedish) - 42% Elisa (owner: Elisa, Finnish) - 31% Tele2 (owner: TELE2, Swedish) - 27% Estonian population is only 1,3 million. Area is bit bigger than in Denmark. |
