n900 hildon desktop stuck at Landscape only
 

Hi guys, I'm new to this thread and new owner of N900

I've just hard-reset my N900 but after reinstalling CSSU-stable version, my hildon desktop won't work at all

it is initially worked after reboot, but after nokia finished loading all apps in desktop, it reverted to Landscape and stuck there

I've installed orientation lock applet but the problem persist

I flash my eMMC using this file [RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin]
and my rootfs using this:
[RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin]

I've also tried using [gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/ui_can_rotate -t bool true], but still cannot go into portrait mode

I also tried to change turning control in Phone, but also cannot turn into portrait

I've also tried to remove battery for 30 seconds but still cannot change into portrait.

and no, my accelerometer is doing just fine

Can anyone please help me, is what I'm doing wrong?

Although why on earth would anyone want to use a nice device like the N900 in portrait is beyond me.

Alright, I'm the wrong person to say anything (not only do I always use my phone in landscape, I'm one of the few curmudgeons left here who still hasn't installed CSSU on his N900s), but let me ask you something:

First, are you absolutely sure about that? If nothing rotates, not even the apps that normally do so without CSSU, the accelerometer might not be working perfectly...

(As a corollary to this, let me ask: does the phone otherwise work fine? Browses the web, places calls, etc.? If there is something else that also is not working right, that might help pinpoint the issue.)

Second, I'm sure you've already done so, but have you checked your "/usr/share/hildon-desktop/transitions.ini" file? Not only to check whether the [rotate] section looks right, but also just to see if the file itself isn't messed up in some manner.

As an absolute last resort, you might try reflashing the phone to PR 1.3.1, but without upgrading to CSSU. Then, test to see if everything is working perfectly. Just to make sure that this is in fact a CSSU related issue...

for the Phone apps, it is true, nothing rotates. after booting up for the first time, the system can rotate, but after it loaded the apps, it just flip back to landscape.

all of the apps work fine even though they are stuck at landscape only

Hmm. "Photos" app won't rotate the picture being viewed when you turn the phone? The browser won't rotate if you open up the menu and go to "options", then "settings", and then check "Enable rotation"?

Hmm. Nothing seems wrong to me here, though I am not really an expert. :)

That is, I think, the correct file for the PR1.3.1 root filesystem. If you want to reformat absolutely everything in the N900, you'll also need to flash the "EMMC" as well; there's a separate .bin file for that. If you haven't already seen it, there's a page with a lot of info about this process at:

(This is another area where I am probably not the right person to say anything, as I've only flashed an N900 once...)

Don't get confused with forcedrotation and h-d rotation many do and they are completely different.
I try to refrain from using "Portrait Mode" for this reason.

The gconftool you posted above or the lock-applet should allow the desktop to rotate.

I think maybe what you are looking at there is the helper app for the browser, which just collects and manages bookmarks. If you have an actual web page open, the set of options from the drop-down menu should be different ("New window", "Reload", "Find on page", "Save page as", "Downloads", "Details", and "Options").

But yeah, if photos are rotating correctly, then the hardware should be fine.

Hmm. At this point, it would probably be better for me to wait for someone who actually uses CSSU to comment on what is going on here... :)

I't doesn't sound to me like you have a problem. Most of the n900 doesn't support portrait anyway. The rotated browser doesn't have all the options of the landscape. The phone has it's own rotate option. CSSU stable only allows you to rotate the desktop to portrait. The icons have to be arranged for portrait though. It doesn't do it automatically.
Feel free to correct me. I'm not 100 percent on this.

Yes, that might be it! If the keyboard is open, the photos app will still rotate pictures, but the web browser will stay in landscape mode. But does the CSSU actually care about the keyboard status?

yes it does just like on the stock original firmware. if you notice that you're keyboard stays lit even if you close the slide, or if you see that you're phone automatically unlocks your screen(which is very annoying especially when it's in your pocket), and ofcourse even in phone mode does not go into portrait mode, my best bet would be you lost the magnet on which the slide sensor see if the slide is closed or open, or the sensor itself is broken. if you're lucky you might just be dealing with dust pileup between the sensor and the magnet. me not so lucky:( i tried cleaning the sensor and the magnet but to no avail. you can try to check it if you can open your phone. and yeah, it also sucks the life out of your batteries since the keyboars stays lit and your display always open once in while..

hi all. my keyboard didn't stay lit all the time. And when I slide open my keyboard, the keyboard LED is stays off rather turn on automatically

usually when I lock my phone and after that i open the keyboard slide, it unlocks the screen immediately and go to landscape

so, is it the problem with keyboard slide sensor?

The easiest test that comes to my mind would be:

1) Open up a web page in the browser.

2) Make sure rotation is enabled (as described above), and hold the phone vertically. The page should be displayed in portrait mode.

3) While holding the phone vertical, slide open the keyboard. The page should change to landscape mode.

If this works, your hardware should be fine. :)

answering your question:
1&2. yes, i have opened my web browser and go to settings and tick "Enable Rotation", but still cannot go to portrait mode

3. when opening the keyboard while holding my phone vertically -> display still lock at landscape.

but, i noticed one thing. when typing or when i opened my keyboard while my phone is still locked. the LED on keyboard didn't lit. it only lit when turning on my phone. could this be my keyboard slide sensor problem?

Yeah, that does sound like the phone believes that your keyboard is open, even when it is closed. I don't think the keyboard light should turn on when you switch the phone on; but, I just tried turning one of my N900s on while the keyboard was open, and yes, it did light up the keyboard.

At this point, I think the link that devilboy posted above probably has the info you need to continue from here; you could either manually tell the phone what state the keyboard is in (by editing the /sys/devices/platform/gpio-switch/slide/state file), or fix the problem directly by repairing or replacing the magnet/sensor pair located just above the "P" key...

have you tried to reflash your phone again? make sure that you have the exact stock firmware version specifically for your phone

install midnight commander i think it's from extras repository you can edit it from there just navigate through the directories and click edit. be careful though you could brick your device since you're going to edit system configuration

Actually, that's pretty easy; the file is generated by the operating system, and contains just one word: either "open" or "closed". You'll need to gain root access, then edit the file with your favorite editor and change the word to "closed", at which point (hopefully) it will then believe that the keyboard is closed.

However, I just tried this on my N900, and the OS immediately set it back to "open", so I don't know just how well this technique will work for you. :(

I'm really not a hardware guy, so I can't help you on this. :) I have no manual dexterity, so I've learned never to open my machines, lest they be battered and bruised to bits...

that confirms that your sensor is malfunctioning. I'm sorry I don't have any spare. I too am dealing with the same problem but had to live with it. replacing it would be hard too you'll need a fine point soldering kit if you find a spare sensor. your best bet would be to buy a new n900 which is really cheap if buy it from someone who does not know the power of this mini computer :)

There is another possibility that the sensor is not so much mulfunctioning as it is just short-circuited by a piece of dirt, trapped moisture or some such. I would start by opening the phone and giving it a good clean inside. You will be surprised how much dirt you can find there. Just a gentle brush with an old soft toothbrush plus blow the dust off would do. Do not brush too hard or you may rub some components off.

You'd probably have to stop MCE first... it will update things like the status of the keyboard, LEDs, etc...
