Affordable Mass Production of Parts for the Enhancement of All Our Devices

What I am going to show you is new to most, very old hat for me. It doesn't matter the device you use in our forum....there is the potential to possibly modify it...(there are many new devices here which I have not sat down & had the opportunity of looking at
Those I have I believe can be physically modified. This particular topic here for the moment pertains to the n900 /neo900.
People with different devices should not walk away thinking this post cannot pertain to them & their devices.
Success is inevitable for the n900/ neo900 part whether it gets produced...or I finish it it for myself.
The model works & affordable casts in plastics or resins can be done.
After this I intend to turn my attention to other device models.

...it's about options for the n900 and neo900 ..options for a whack of things ...

How About...

So I'm just throwin' this out there...
How about:
1- not just alu as a material option?
2- high density plastics or resin too? ( less likely to:
a- conduct a shock (reducing liabilities)
b- get very hot..
c- metals are strong but have little "give" on
impact..possibly jarring internals.(If there is a choice
I'd rather have a cheap & easily replaceable part
that would crumple on serious collision, absorbing
impact than a bulletproof pristine body with god
knows what mangled damage inside.)
3- better cell reception than a metal body?
4- a fraction of material/ production costs a consequence of the
preceding...
5- blindfolded? (no one else's data or specs, proprietary or open
but my own..I mean)
6- making it just thick enough for..say :
a- 2 battery thicknesses...for say a mugen-esque battery?
b-...the ability to squeak in say.. something the size of
standard usb ports?
c- more gear.
d- if the n900 or neo900 owner was
able to modify the microsd cardslot there would be the
potential for a port there ...so you could pop cards in or out
on the fly without removing the back?
e- Hell there is an Android smartphone out now with a taser
built in...hmm...can we compete and fit something like that
in?...doesn't have to be a taser..per se ..a zip-gun?....naw
too violent....sleeping-gas pellet gun?..something
weirder..POTATO GUN!..THAT is what I want.:D
7- no glare back?
8- no camera probs at all? So far anyway :D
hopefully the model once finished won't be “off” at all..
and disturb the cameras view properly through the
shutter. Hmm...gotta foresee as much as possible to
avoid that kinda thing..
9- doing it ...by hand?

Let's make it interesting...allll the preceding & how about in less than 2 days...44 hours actually..(I didn't work the ENTIRE 44 hours BTW) finishing to the rough (4 days ago.) Another 2 weeks (seems long...& it is....it is the truly meticulous work from this point...) & its ready for the final step.

What I do.

I paint, illustrate, make harps, violins, all kinds of hybrids..play as well..acoustic and electrified... & carve...I have worked just about every material there is shy of the radioactive.
I have used cnc equipment, laser cutters, etc....all the cool toys.
I have cast metals, bisq, etc.
I don't do casting anymore...nor do I bother with alll the fancy equipment any longer. Pulled me away from my work.
I like to make things ...not produce.

The prime material & it's benefits.

The 1st art...the 1st tools used by humanity still dug up in fabulous condition from places like stonehenge & the like...
5-10-15- 20 000 yr old tools...very resilient. It can take incredible physic pressures as well as blunt & sharp force impacts eyebrow-raisingly fabulously.
That same 1st material used for direct casting of silver & gold...since it could withstand the heat, retain it's edge without cracking or melting...
It can be cut & shaped to the point it is so thin as to see the fingerprints of your hands through it.
I intend the very moment I can to provide a demo for your viewing pleasure.

I enjoy in my spare time doing period piece work from around 5000 B.C. up to about the 9th century.
I have done and do restoration of items & weapons as old as the 12th century. I've worked on 19th century cane swords.....18th century to the current dated damascus steel (beyond count) ...17th century court swords, flanged maces...list goes on in weaponry alone I have embellished and restored.
At the moment I am working on a (verified of course :D) 16th century Scottish cleaver...thing is beautiful.
I digress..

Antler by the way is not bone...it is just tightly growing hair or nails..nothing more.
It just happens to grow so perfectly ...that the grain of it is better than any wood. More resilient and flexible than stone and metal..holds an intricately detailed fine edge...is in essence a fabulous carving material. I have made literally countless pieces...for all kinds of purposes. I have directly cast silver and gold with it even...& retained the original carving with only a slight surface scorching easily removed.

Essentially if a soul can think of a thing with physic properties & dimension it most likely can be made out of antler.
The quintessentially perfect medium for making things, pieces and parts as well...as it just so happens......

Now I must admit I have been doing such work (in antler alone) for more than 35 years....so I have a slight advantage than most.

Depending on environmental stresses on the animal which dictate what I consider to be poor to excellent grades of antler...deer is fine for small pieces..the density tends to be fine for good work. Elk I favour not just for density but the proportionate size of the work that can be done. As well elk tends to a perfect white clean appearance. Moose tends to have a more mottled dirty look & an open grain in compare to either deer or elk ...but is still better than any wood or manmade for it's strengths...I favour moose only to do VERY large work. Consequently what is here below...is a small piece... in moose antler.

My work here fits perfectly.
The whole thing fits together..perfectly. A nice tight fit.
Everything functions properly.
The original photos are timestamped if anyone wishes to doubt me. I was very meticulous in that.... amoungst other aspects.
Yes it is not a back cover...
I saw that as pointless material waste and a waste from many other standpoints. But that is my thinking...
Pragmatically I thought why get rid of the back at all?

If I did a whole back cover I wouldn't stop there...I'd do a complete body replacement.
I have the material.

But I happen to like the body it's got... I do however see the attraction of a thicker middle....for some to have a bigger battery or possibly extra ports... & more gear inside.

The Options...

So this is what I am proposing...it's roughed....finished except for making it smooth for mold making.....( all the spit and polish done in 2 weeks )everyone should discuss whether or not they would like it in plastic or resin...keep the colours simple 1 or possibly 2.. ...ie...black or white. We can tally numbers and IF it seems viable by the number of possible orders...we are a go for mold making and production... (should be anyway...after it has left my hands...saying of course a calamity doesn't happen to Tom Hanks with my package on the Fedex plane...."Wilsonnn!!!"... :D)...

However If By the 11th of July 2014...one month later...

A- not enough people are interested in it that is cool..really...
B- If a consensus cannot be reached 'tween us fellows ...that's sad, but that's ok....
C- there is argument...& it gets ugly (don't like that...I like everybody happy, laughin' & joking ) ....

= I'll simply call an end to it all..

I'd like mine you see & (honestly.. realistically ..I'm not going to wait forever sooooo that being the case)..I will then enamel the model..& ...well..I got mine... until it needs a fresh coat of enamel...repairs ...or it finally breaks from wear & tear..& then I'll just carve another

If however ...enough people are interested.... hurray! It will get finished & will be ready for mold making. After that ...all that will be needed are the tiny side catches which could be added in the process.

The Next Step

Technically speaking ...moose is my last choice compared with elk or deer for mold making. It is the sheer size alone which makes moose the candidate. I do not expect this particular part to withstand multiple makings of molds even with my foresight in reinforcing it with antler lamination. A certainty is it will withstand multiple cooler mold making processes. 1-2-3 possibly 4. It could handle 1 possibly 2...but no more... very hot mold processes...(for say...metals and the like.) My recommendation is to do the 1st cooler mold...inspect the original & mold upon completion...if it can take it...do a 2nd...stop there...and prepare for 1 hot mold making process...& do not expect it to survive ...if it does...do the hot again.
The more molds the better esp. for different materials.
Worst case scenario it gives us only the 1st mold & gives up, or only 1 mold came out well. Doesn't matter. We still win. From that 1 mold up to 100 copies certainly can be made. 1st gen. The best of those SHOULD be taken and molds made from those immediately AT ALL COSTS.
Then from those molds assembly line production very affordably can commence.
The models purpose is to be the sacrificial goat for the molds. It surviving intact the processes multiple times is neither likely nor expected. If it does...make more molds (backup. :D store them for future necessity) until it can't take the strain.

Production and material costs should be negligible with casting...

It also doesn't matter the method of copy or reproduction...the necessity of cleaning and polishing the finished product always remains...more finicky & costly depending upon the type of finished material

Understand: this isn't a prototype. Or a one-off.

Understand please I like to make the cool stuff...not produce it. So I won't be doing any casting sorry.

And yes the model is BUTT ugly...to look at...that is the mottled dirty colour of moose for ya...combined with the necessity of the antler laminations. It isn't pretty...but it is smooth surfaced..THAT is relevant since mass produced copies will look and feel like the coloured enamel or plastic or metal that they should.

I was originally going to show what I've quietly been working on...the n900 case I mentioned....but it is far from completion yet...I'm in the process of adorning it with time consuming artistic embellishment in topically relevant detail carving...and when finished was going to unveil it..but I also see the practical needs here of our community and so set aside the case...and moved some of my professional work time for my business clients and patrons around to accommodate the making of this...”sandwich” part.... thus far it has only been 44 hours from start to roughed finish...fine smoothing and prep for the mold work will take 2 weeks at best...must be meticulous..so it is not a huge loss of my time...yet

I have promised nothing ...asked for nothing.
Just delivered the rough model...which shall...crossing fingers all goes well....be finished and ready for mold and cast work in a month

If people want this..then we can talk dollars and cents after I've shouted “alriteythen! Done! Perfect! We are a go!” :D
I'm not interested in making a mint from this contraption I've made. A humble and modest percentage of the profits would suffice (I do need after all more Work-Beer :D ...that IS essential...summers here.....keeps my fingers nimble and quick...

I'm not ...and my work isn't cheap...but for this place and all you guys...I'm affordable. :D
..Until now I have refrained from doing cross-over work from what I professionally do and personally do …..
in creating this and letting it loose here on TMO...and how I comport my business normally is not the same as what I am offering here...let alone here and now...). Making something that is practical and affordable for everyone that can be taken off or put on easily...is something I'm interested in.
Open source?...as open as the skill in my hands which carved it.
Free?...as the deer and the elk and the moose that yearly shed their antlers.

Is it a Better idea than others? Sorry not interested in competing....also the question is too obtuse... that is really a matter of personal desires, wants and perspective.
I think the real issue is about purpose, functionality ...do you lose or gain it, aesthetic, cost, and time to produce.
Can you afford the alu back?
or are your finances super-tight? and you can hopefully, possibly only afford a small amount ?
Is it important to have an alu back?
or full body with the bigger stand ?
or are you happy with what back and kickstand you have now?...
is that an issue for you the individual?
That is what I think it's all about ...nothing more ...personal wishes and preferences.
One or the other? Who said it has to be an either or?
If you have the money...Why not get the alu and the plastic/ resin “sandwich” part? ..
I know I wouldn't mind having both …

Here are the pics.
(Please note the incut on the inside end ..
It isn't a mistake or flaw. It is deliberate. It is easily filled in for a finnicky catch slot...but at the time I wasn't about to ruin my only n900 (backcover catch) in the process of playing around with the making of this.)

Update: Due to an overwhelming lack of interest in production and my desire to use what I created... ...
the N.C.S. part here...
has been enameled....
making it uniformly the same colour and look of the n900 black body...
perfect for daily use...
but making it now unsuitable for reproduction casting.

This particular mass-production project is terminated.

Re: The N.C.S. part

thanks for the effort. that was way too long. sorry didn't finish reading everything. :D so you're making a body replacement out of antler? and wants to know if people are interested?

Re: The N.C.S. part

Unfortunately the post is long...It was much longer before condensing it to this...It is long to explain in detail and answer just about every possible question to avoid misinformation. The post is unfortunately long as well to try to illuminate the fact that THIS TYPE OF WORK IS NOT BOUND BY A SINGLE DEVICE MODEL...I believe with this process we can enhance other devices than just the n900/ neo900...the older and the newer here as well...I need to study the physic of devices like the n950..the n9 ...the jolla...I haven't had one in my hands to tell...I have no doubt the n800 and n810 can be enhanced...I have those models and am experimenting with them...for models I have never seen and studied I do not know the extent of enhancement if any can be done....but as can be seen when you take apart a n900..If I can jigsaw puzzle fit a mid section between the back cover and the body...which is no small feat....in less than 2 days...by hand....I do not think that other device's body's would be more complex...rather they will more than likely fit more simply. So...the question for everyone here is....If I could build expansions...say for EVERY model of device in TMO...we get them cast...CHEAP....why it's christmas time then ain't it people? :D If you can stuff bigger batteries in your current device but the damn back on it won't let you....or you want to stuff more gear in it but can't .....I just may be able to help with that :D....See where I'm coming from now?...I won't know until I study everything we got though. But for the moment the n900/ neo900...then other devices.....

There is no replacement body in any photos.
This is not a replacement body....the point is to avoid that...avoid the waste of duplicating what we already have....the point is to be able to have an easily removable middle to expand the thickness of the device...for larger battery...additional ports...etc.
The master is made from antler to take the stresses of the mold making process...retain it's form long enough before it is ghosted by the mold-making process...the antler model is to be the sacrificial lamb for more molds... and then produce in bulk either plastic...high density plastic..or resin or resin (and "other") (it is a "mid-device part "...resting between back cover and body as is clearly depicted in the photos and illuminated thoroughly in the process... in the post)... combinations...at a very affordable price.

There is no way I expect everyone to afford a hand carved original out of antler..let alone a full body hand carved out of antler...but I do expect the richest to the poorest of us here to be able to afford the "sandwich" mid-section made out of plastics, high density plastics or resins....THAT is what I want....everyone able to have this...it shouldn't just be for those who have buckets of money to throw at it....there are enough things like that in the world....for only those that have plenty of money....I'm trying to do away with that philosophy starting with this part.

For those trying to put a monetary value on the original antler part and what they guesstimate it may be worth...once finished...and if any one person could just buy one from me....No no one person can afford it. I can pump them out...but. I won't...my work time is precious ...and I am not an assembly line...My hands and eyes have a finite lifespan of work in them...I have never squandered that.

The value for example of this particular model I have made ..no one person could afford..I consider it pretty much priceless :D Because selling it to one person would disservice everyone who owns a n900 (and upcoming neo900)...and deny them the same options and opportunities. I can't do that. It's wrong. So we either are able (hopefully ) to develop this for everyone in mind...or it stays with me.

Re: The N.C.S. part

Took a break for a mo. to add....
I imagine I (so far)come across as some kind of mad carving monk on some kinda socialist or communist holy crusade...
I don't want that.
Observe whenever the latest cool tech toy or device or software whatever comes out...I don't think there is a one of us here that can't say we are very much like kids with our joy and our desire over such things...
I myself have seen stuff come and go here and in the marketplace that I wished at the time I could afford...but one thing or another I couldn't.
I know ...sad eh? boo hoo. :(
In my work I make and work things the wealthy covet...
When I was younger I used to do a lot of exclusive showings and such...(not many do exactly what I do)...
At some there may or may not have been modest or high entrance fees just to get in...regardless...I would see the wealthy ..for sure...but I saw alot of people...alot of families...alot of kids that obviously just didn't have much...the parents having brought them so they could at least see this stuff....At first ...I just would give this kid or that kid at those shows exactly what they eyeballed in my work...you could see they wanted it...but no way the family could afford that...YOU try turning people away..ESPECIALLY kids away because they don't have enough...I could never do it...
(sigh)...that was the prime reason I got into mold making and casting when I was younger...so I could do limited runs of copies ...so sure...the poor family or kid couldn't afford the cost of the time-consuming piece in some odd or unique material...mammoth...narwhal horn..etc...I always made sure they could have an affordable copy of it that looked and felt the same.

I ain't on a crusade....I just could never stand seeing people left out of something....especially if it isn't over ability ...but money.

but if I were..and this was a crusade...

wouldn't this be a good one? :D

Way big and confusing postmaybe you were weak in summary writing :D

its not body replacement but way better in some regards Actually the sandwich idea can used for lots of stuff like extra capacity battries full size ports lots of extra gears you can even put in .......:eek::eek::confused::cool::rolley es::cool:.

The then neo900 users can find a lotta usecaces of the extra space maybe even custom boards with extra..............etc etc ;):confused::eek::eek::cool:

its all abbout extra functionality uses just limited by ones imaginations and also super cheap and efficent .......

We are here to discuss on the viablity of such a product intrested people more usecaces sharing ideas and if fesiable laying down plans on the table to move forward .. ;-;)

Nothing wrong in being a mad carving monk, rather the opposite! Handcrafting such materials is what did bring us to where we are today.

Sometimes your writings are a bit difficult to follow though, at least for non-english-native speakers as it feels like free association... you use lots of ellipses there... but anyway, I enjoyed your long piece, even the longer one I had time to read before you edited the 2 opening pieces into one :D

[and nothing wrong also in coming across as socialist or communist either, I think those things are considered some kind of sin or felony on your part of the world, but in europe it's pretty OK...]

I like your idea, endsormeans, I really do,.. since it's great. But I can't get away from the N900 in antler body. Gosh, that'd be f***ing fabulous! Or ivory, even better but waaay more expensive, I guess. But hey, imagine, in couple thousand years archeologists come across an N900 in antler or ivory case... "What do we have here?" Insides will not survive the time challenge, of course, but the case will... Fantastic!

Hehehe the time passage?....replace "archeologist" with "mutated sentient giant cockroach archeologist" saying "What do we have here?" :D

Ivory is nice...it is beautiful...but it is a brittle material...it isn't as strong and durable...I've worked old ivory...it's all the same..with age it just gets more delicate.
I have beautiful "plates" lengths and "beams" of deer and esp. elk that are china white...slick and beautiful...as lovely as ivory...waiting to be worked....Ivory is nice but there is better for the purposes.
I believe existing ivory should be worked properly...not burned, mulched or destroyed. The poachers should be shot and the elephants left in peace at worst and helped at best. But that is a perfect world and we don't got that yet.
So working old ivory isn't an issue for me. Recent ivory is.
Be that as it may...any endangered species I think should be left in peace...until it dies naturally...then hand me the goods and I'll make something worthy and respectful of the life of that animal.
Extinct species?...Mammoth ! WOO HOO! bring it on baby!
A grand material to work in.

Hmmm...wait for it...
shortly you will wish to see stuff I'll be posting here... :D

Hehe
You want f***ing fabulous?
How is this...I am going to give a demo of how f***ing fabulous antler really is ...very very soon...

But 1st I am going to post 2 photos shortly which and an exceptionally short (for me even :D) write up. Everyone should find that VERY interesting.

Secondly after the understanding you've grok'd from the demo ...
oh my yes you will want an antler mid-section....

After the demo you WILL want an antler full-body...

After the demo you WILL want an antler case....

And...(in my whisper voice here....) you can have ALL 3...hehehe

I won't make an IDENTICAL full body....Why?...It's been done...I'd rather do something different...

"But how then Paul?..." you are supposed to say...(adding before I can respond)..."....you said you wouldn't make a n900 body out of antler....you said you wouldn't mass produce antler bodies at ALL Paul...what kinda **** you pullin' man?..."

To which I say (in an even lower whisper in an even quieter room .. :D)

"....did you notice (in my atrociously long but relevant explanatory post) my mention of making the "part" out of resin....and specifically out of resin and "other" materials?...."

I will not make a n900 body out of antler...yes...instead I really really really do hope this project ends up as "a go" since it opens up the ability to make not just enhancement attachments for ALL our devices...potentially from the n770 up to the Jolla....BUT AS WELL POTENTIAL FULL BODY REPLACEMENT...(here's my stage whisper again)...out of resin and "other" materials preferably...

You are supposed to say here (dramatically)..."but Paul...what do you mean by making full bodies out of "other" materials and resin?..."

And here is the answer...the joy of modern (for the last 30 yrs) resins in the use of casting has done nothing but become AB FAB in my opinion...15 years ago was the last time I worked with resins in production of copies...

If you want antler cases and bodies and parts you can have them.
If there is enough consensus for their production IN resins...and "other"...yes of course...and pretty cheap too...cheaper than just making said cast out of 100% resin.

Available in almost every northern hemispheric country...it will be imperative wherever production will be occurring...since keeping material acquisition as localized as possible to minimize red tape...it is imperative to find a reindeer (at worst) or (better) deer/ elk farm...buy a whack of antler (much cheaper may be hunting down every antler you can in europe at garage/ estate/ flea market sales ...talking to old hunters...or their widows...they always have a whack of them collecting dust in the attic....make sure they are always properly dried...I do not suggest antler from a fresh hunting expedition...it needs time to dry and to cure.) old antler is best...and there is always lots of it.

Since deer and elk farms raise the animals take the shed antlers grind them up too..mainly for asian demand (supposedly keeps you young and vibrant...aphrodisiac properties...hmmm...THAT accounts for my youthful appearance, excess energy, and mad libido !!! I've been inhaling the stuff for YEARS :D)...it won't be hard to track ready to use supply down...but the cost may be more....hence my unorthodox suggestion concerning tracking old racks down...yes it may sound odd .....but any single hunter ...young or old or a widow of a hunter could have a dozen or two racks in the garage or attic that they don't mind giving up/ getting rid of / or selling afford-ably ....deadly earnest here...it will be a fraction of what the farms would sell it to us. Trying to gauge how many cases or bodies a rack could make is fruitless...some racks may be small...some large....but a rough middle ground ball-park conservative guess 'tween small and large....would be 10-15 bodies or cases from 1 average mid sized rack of deer.....so....in the 100's or even thousands of cases / bodies...it can be VERY economical.

Get all your antler ground to a fine powder...
As an example of it's ability to "bind" with itself as equally as other things...get abit of the dust wet with water....hell....spit even :D
when that little bit of powder now dampened ...dries...it will dry seamlessly...as hard if not harder than before. But there is no agent to "hold" it together...
Lo and behold ...the resin.
JUST enough resin..(.it depends on the purity of density of the antler...ie...when you grind up ALL of an antler...you are as well grinding up the porous honey-comb middle or center of the antler...so it all mixes with the more denser outer part of the antler(best part for carving in fact...a few cast attempts with testing antler dust vs resin ratio for EXACTLY the totally and thoroughly mixed antler dust in possesion...by this I mean....don't add new dust to the pile...use up everything in current stock 1st....adding new antler dust to old WILL throw off you resin to antler dust ratio....because invariably the new dust will be more or less dense than your existing supply thereby throwing a monkey wrench into your measurement equation.)...

A few trial and error will get you mix perfect...BUT only to your existing antler dust...for every new batch of dust ...no matter the quantity you will need to test your ratio's again.

You don't want the mix to be too much antler and not enough binding/holding resin....it will be brittle.
You don't want too much resin instead either...or it is then simply more akin to plastic and you gain less of the antler's benefits.
Some where in between ie a ratio of greater than 70% antler (but no higher than 90%) to no greater than 30% resin ( and no lower than 10%) should get the (personal preference really) desired (feel, density, texture etc...for that specific project) perfect ratio for whatever you wish to make ....STRONGER, MORE DURABLE, MORE DAMAGE RESISTANT THAN MY ORIGINAL CARVED OUT OF ANTLER. VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL IN LOOK, FEEL, WEIGHT, DENSITY, TEXTURE... EVERYTHING...IN EVERY WAY THE SAME....JUST BETTER...:D

Get it?

And yes.... I won't carve a new body...pointless really :)
And I'll tell you why....
Because whoever is going to do the mold and cast work...could just as easily take an old beater n900 body apart.. make a mold....AND MAKE RESIN / ANTLER bodies far easier and quicker than I could carve it....and I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT SOMEONE TO DO JUST THAT !!!! :D
It would be stronger and better than what I could carve.
I want an antler body too.man!.... :D

Get that too? :D

About the antler case I am artistically fine detail carving...now.. :D
Oh yea man!
Wait until you see it when I unveil THAT puppy!
You will most certainly want it!
(stage whisper again :D)

"...And if things go well...why ...you could have that too...Made out of antler/ resin ...better than my original ..with ALL the bas-relief carving I have done...."

Get it yet again? :D

Just wait for the photos...
And the upcoming demo...

BAM!
Feel that man?
That was you gettin hit with a "...you can have your cake, pie, ice cream, donuts AND cookies ....AND eat it too..." Way-Cool Bomb I just hit you with... :D

Re: Affordable Mass Production of Parts for the Enhancement of All Our Devices

OK.
1st my promised update: "Everything S'ok so far!" :D

Next ...O you lucky guys :D
Here it is ...this post and the next I think you will like.

Baby Pictures! Yay!
yup you heard right.
I dug out 2 pieces ...took me awhile I'll tell you..I was digging through old (I'm a sucker for keeping nostalgic work) saved work for DAYS to find these 2 relics! I carved and cast it when I was 15 years old...36 years ago...wow that makes me sound and feel real old :D

The 1st photo ....looks like hell eh?
Well when it was 1st carved ..it was carved in a specific way to highlight the detail and augment it for the final product ....the mold.
The original here..on a backdrop of white to show the pierced through carving (very tricky delicate work that...not to mention it makes said piece VERY fragile in compare with a solid bas-relief carving in antler.)
It is exactly 1 1/4 inches in diameter not too big..... :D
It WAS EXACTLY 3/16 of an inch thick...I say was since the mold process was a hot one (for metals) and it charred the antler to a depth of almost 1/16 of an inch on its front surface....I scraped it down...brought the relief work back to snuff where it needed it...and I DID ANOTHER hot mold...it made it through a second charring and what you see in a photo I just took less than a couple hours ago...is the original still in pretty good shape ...now only 1/16 of an inch thick ...survived high heat charring twice and 36 years of abuse on top of that...If it had been twice as thick originally I don't doubt it could have made it through 3-4 or 5 intolerably hot mold making procedures...(When I mean hot...I mean so hot in fact we mere mortals would have caught fire or begun to melt from the heat - Hot....pretty hot)

Now then...the original was done in the choicest cut of deer antler and the piece though pierced and adding vulnerability was circular and concave...adding to it's strength.

The moose antler part I have made is not as strong (a negative)...but it is more flexible...(bonus)...it has finicky "levels" to it (negative)...but there is less surface to "hold" the heat during the process. (bonus) and has a higher survivability if doing a hot mold process for something like metals....therefore I give the moose antler part done in metals only 1 hot mold...at extreme 2 before collapsing for good. If doing cooler molds...for resins and such..it should survive at least 4 such processes if not more...but I cannot see it surviving more than 10. Also...it would be imperative to make a cast in something very durable...any metal...really... so a "master" copy exists...to make future molds from...since cool molds out of liquid rubbers...do not have a good lifespan.

Anyway here is the original in deer antler having survived 2 hot mold processes..and 36 years of additional abuse at 1 1/4 inches in dia. by 1/16 of an inch thick and accompanying it...the very 1st cast in metal I ever did..in silver. Antler is resilient ...holds an edge well...no matter how shallow the depth...I measured once..it can hold edges...ie...carved line beside carved line beside carved line...etc...with a distance between the lines of less than 1/64 of an inch...for myself ...I used to be able up to 1/ 128th I know....but few bother to notice such details...so it is only for personal I carve "THAT" tight. :D

http://s26.postimg.org/j58d0f76h/original_3_dogs.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/dsex8jtw9/3_d...ver_cast_1.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/70oi5p4wp/3_d...how_detail.jpg

It was my 1st work at the age of 15 so...it is young and not indicative of my current work 36 years later obviously...

the next post and the photos contained will give you an idea how I have progressed since then in the realms of skill and application of the medium.
It may take a bit ....but it will be posted within 4 hours tops.

P.S. the design is of 3 dogs knotted around each other chasing and biting each other's tails ...drawn onto the antler and then carved from that point. As well the legs and body parts overlapping each other in proper bas-relief style are carved down or carved up to give the viewer's eye the impression of depth or "over and under knotwork" ...ie. a leg "in front" of another animals leg.

In conclusion here...Oh yeah ....antler is freakin tough. :D

Re: Affordable Mass Production of Parts for the Enhancement of All Our Devices

This is a little closer to this current date...it is a hawk...bas-relief in the round done what...just 2 years ago now...maybe 3.
Note the hole through the beak for a lanyard...said lanyard would then appear to be being bitten by said hawk....quite handy really.

I'd show a pick of the entire piece but the additional 21/2 feet of syrian damascus steel (in raindrop pattern) double edged sword attached to the elk hawk handle and guard was rather awkward to fit all into the foto.
The damascus I get is from the self same city from a family I have dealt with for decades....good friends...grandpa, son, grandson....many generations they all work my steel...grand guys really.

P.S. carving the feathers thus did a fab job of enhancing the grip...it gently catches in the hand...stays firm very well...not slick...or smooth if I carved it flush for example.

Only dilemma with antler ever is having to work within the parameters (at times and depending on the project) of the material's natural proportions....hence I didn't want to shave off too much just to make things look needlessly symmetrical in this case...(that piece of elk was pristine too...it would have been a crime to grind away chunks of it ...to not to use it all...so ya :D)
Oh yes....the process of enhancement and preservation I use is 1st I shape the piece to suit the purpose...then design on it...then carve it...then use a homemade mixture of crushed and ground black walnut shell paste with a carrier linseed oil...coat the entire piece...let it dry...with jewelers tools scrape and polish the most upper exposed flat to the gentle grades going in..giving the enhanced appearance of a greater (false) depth...as if (in this case) the feathers truly went underneath each other...the lighting here was a little too bright to show the proper shadow ...to see in a natural light the true nature of such depth work...The crushed black walnut shell extract seals the antler and helps preserve it ...ad millennium infinitum. Direct antler carving application of work is just as limitless

http://s26.postimg.org/jykyt1d7d/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/aj53ftv6h/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/cq9c3r0gp/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/jac4a3ehl/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/sw5oqe5nd/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/g8lc051cp/image.jpg

And I'll pop up other photos...more detailed and diverse in carving and purpose ...(after I finish dinner) ....for your perusal :D

What I could immediately find of "key pattern work" a more geometric form of patternwork...knotwork...in some cases irregular shapes altered through carving to appear towards center to balance...
none of these is over 2 inches in diameter.fairly small...truly small is expecting detail carved portraiture of your puppy on a 1/4 inch button of antler :D

http://s26.postimg.org/617e1h4ih/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/abm1x29ll/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/x1l6q1st5/image.jpg

Fairly standard knotwork under 1 1/2 inch in diameter and just less than an 1/8 inch thick and pierced through...

http://s26.postimg.org/ldr4vi3o9/image.jpg

And lastly of course zoomorphics are fav of mine...

http://s26.postimg.org/ic0cljqjd/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/3oze3vrx5/image.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/sjivxycrd/image.jpg

got a soft spot for this little guy..he was my icon here at tmo for a long time...he's less than an inch square..and 1/8 thick out of narwhal horn...I did even more humour applications ...which since done in B+W was perfect for my coffee mug and some of my blank t-shirts..I don't like to wear logos or advertising ...but I love pleasing to the eye pattern and design..:) ...
..or course much of what you have seen thus far was applied to inlay ...gunstocks, hunting knives and bows...all kinds of things...as well I then pull out sketch paper...then do pen and ink...then do finished illustrations...then do graphic comp. ...make silk-screen work...prints...wicked t-shirts etc.. and usually finish either integrating the same carved design into a painting or starting a new oil painting.....this little guy spawned quite a bit of humour actually....

http://s26.postimg.org/xjgc5wie1/image.jpg

this here is more indicative of what results with pen and ink illustration from a carving. The size of the original (ink) is about 4 feet tall...sharp clean lines...perfect for posters and such...the final design in oil ended up being integrated into a 8 foot tall 12 foot wide scene painting.

http://s26.postimg.org/f947vx0yh/image.jpg

I'll stop here or I may as well post my entire portfolio ...but it is in all a small sampler of what varied work I have done and do...I'd show my carved inlaid music instruments off, my work in whale vertebrae, more tools, jewelries, weaponry modern and renovations/ reconstructions and embellishments on period piece weapons ...and more carving and inlay but...I'll leave it there... ::D

So...there in a brief nutshell is what I do after explanations....sorry 'bout the photo quality... a photographer I am not...so there is a rundown not only of the artistic end of my work but cross applications thrown in.

So ....tighten the post up a bit and...time to go back to the bench and continue on the part...

Re: Affordable Mass Production of Parts for the Enhancement of All Our Devices

Aw...
thanks man... :)
me I'm never quite content with what I've done personally or professionally and am always trying to do either sublimely perfect simpler pieces or more insanely complex work...or a balance 'tween the 2.

The photos really don't do the work justice...the lighting sucks and the enlargement to see the detail is deceptive. The real joy is holding any piece in the hand...looking at it...feeling the texture of the work...the proportionately the weight feels real without being heavy.
And the nice thing about antler...compared to metal...or gem or stone...even woods..it isn't cold..... it holds the warmth of the holder...the wearer. It feels alive. All around the stuff looks old...feels old...feels hmm timeless when it is in your hand...it grounds you..makes you feel more ...real...more present..(if that could be described as a feeling) and at the same time...I swear it pulls you out of your body...in this time....and makes you "see it" buried or exposed or dug up or found by another... God alone knows when from now.
A bit unnerving but at the same time a real feeling of permanence ...hmm..........like when you are going for a swim at the river...and hanging onto a rock in the middle and feeling the fast current..the tow pull at you...YOU aren't the rock...the piece IS.....by holding the piece ..you feel you are just trying to hang on ...to be present with that permanence in the fast flowing river of time....THAT is the feeling it pulls out of you...it is ...interesting..

Haha
probably accounts for my writings...how I explain myself ...express myself in posting in our forum...

In my 1st original unabridged very long 2 post -post :D I in brief mentioned it's only vulnerabilities and another example of it's wonders...

A- Constant (overexposure) long term immersion in water will slowly disintegrate antler...or wearing jewelry repeatedly while showering will strip it of the oils that moisturize it. Handling it re-moisturizes it to an extent..from the natural oils in the hand...but after serious exposure (ie. a shower) ...it's the continuous abuse without remoisturizing that will dry it out....normally a couple drops of baby oil rubbed in by hand will keep it fresh....especially if it is being continuously handled and exposed to enviroment

B- Leaving a piece on a window sill, a radiator, or a car dash will not destroy the piece per se...but it will fracture it...the energy of the heat from refracted sunlight...from a radiator...will build up as an energy inside the piece until it snaps. Weird huh?...It can take incredible extremes...but it can't take that.

The Lost Quick story removed from the 1st post.
I will show one of these pieces in the upcoming demo.
Ahem...about 18 years ago..up at my mountain shop...I was sitting in the sunshine on my porch ..carving outside...a whack of small pieces destined for inlay and such...I had about hmm...40 or 50 done...and as usual toss them at the end of the day into my ball cap and carry them home...unbeknownst to me at the time on my way home about 6 or 7 fell out ...and were lost...I got home ...and was sure I had carved more than I had...but couldn't find them...until 11 years ago walking up to my studio porch in the big hills...I saw something sticking up out of the ground...just a bit...and it was THIS little guy...

http://s26.postimg.org/9h43orr4p/image.jpg

partially buried with 6 of his friends completely buried...Picked them up cleaned the dirt off...and they were...are still (couldn't part with them after their ordeal :D) perfectly fine...really a pinprick of time in their lifespan...lost and buried....and that was just my cute lil' old experience with ones I made. :D

Wait for the demo(s)...all around I am sure it will help give more of a ...an understanding ...a feeling of relativity... than environmentally isolated photos under an extreme false lighting....the demos will be ready as time permits in between working on the part....I do see though physic demonstration as being a better representation of the material and it's qualities as being imperative to a greater understanding of it's applications. "Saying it" or showing photos is one thing..."Seeing it" displayed in action ...in real time....... is an eye opener.
The demos will floor you I am sure.

Re: Affordable Mass Production of Parts for the Enhancement of All Our Devices

Ok folks

I've set up a site to handle various projects I'm doing at a few of my studios...the one up the mountain....my in home ...and one of my shops...as well as a general cool-***** place to chit-chat. I'm also thinking of having a small space for a few of the obscure n8x0 programs and files some are always asking about...hosting a bit o' stuff seems cool to me.

Anywho ...proper introductions will have to be later (I will do a more casual sit down once I'm not so ...um ....driven...yea.)

To pique your curiosity the antler stress test is just that.
I have extolled it's virtues of longevity
and it's strengths as a perfect (or near to perfect) material for use if powdered and mixed with the proper resins at the proper ratio.
Let's look at the material in the raw...unenhanced with only 1/3 less the strengths as my purported hybrid resin/ antler dust poser.

The prime reasons I posted this more privately is the gratuitously flagrant abuse and use of..

A- An open flame

B- Much clanging banging shaking and noise involved.

C- Pliers, Hammers, Mallets, and a very old...very large...very heavy 20lb. sledgehammer.

D- Pointed and specific use of profanity to emphasize a point...if not 2.

E- Being summer now and getting hot in the shop...which means the end of my self-imposed 6 month teetotaling...and the grand time of "Work-Beer"!!!! woo-hoo...and so there is alcohol involved....(not that I'm inebriated during the making of this...or ever use power or any tool during such work of any kind...
(disclaimer :D) )

So before you see it whadaya think is going to do it in?

fire?
the hammer? ...
a two handed over-the-head swing with the 20lb sledge?
the less blunt or more piercing impact?....
how many attempts?
How much repeated brutality in succession can antler take?
How much can 3 pieces 18 years old...lost and buried in the ground suffering through 7 years...7 winters ...then found...how much can these old boys take ...do ya think?

I love the stuff ...it's like freakin' superman. :D
Perfect material for making anything out of ...let alone bodies and cases ...lasting long after you are dust in the grave :D

The 1st segment I have up ( thus far ) I call "Blunt-Force Drama" ('stead of "trauma"...hehe)
After the test I continue with discussion pertaining to vehicular damage...and lastly with talking on it's merits of stopping a bullet... my childhood reminiscence and 1st hand observations of the effects of using pieces for target practice on the farm with the rifles ....how it all can apply today....and finishing it all off with shouts of ...."Work-Beer !!!" ... :D

So make yourselves comfy...grab your favourite stimulant (pop, coffee, tea. etc...) or depressant (Alcohols...etc ;) ) sit back and enjoy...

don't mind the wonky vid bit at the beginning ..it straightens out quick.

enjoy.

http://celticartco.mobi/

Alriteythen..
I'm not about to spend any more time on this I draw the line at borrowing a semi, asking to use a tank at the nearby base....or wasting a bullet....I think I proved enough of a point on material durability.

That being said...I couldn't resist ...just one last demo. :D

Here's a visit to a good friend's place...where with their helpful assistance with the vid.
Here we have the 18 yr old piece (which was lost and buried for 7 years) I attempted to set fire to in the 1st video...now being run over by a mid-size 4-door car TWICE. Unmarred.

It isn't a case..of course...but with a resin/ antler dust hybrid case properly made...Seriously weaponry or explosives would prob. be the only thing to damage it. :D

Or ivory, even better but waaay more expensive, I guess. But hey, imagine, in couple thousand years archeologists come across an N900 in antler or ivory case... "What do we have here?" Insides will not survive the time challenge, of course, but the case will... Fantastic!

Hey Flash...just to let you know....concerning ivory..VERY recently...I did salvage about 5 -7 lbs of ivory (5 -7 lbs of "ugly" actually...some shmoe did a terrible carving in it ...a cigarette rolling station...thing is huge and butt ugly)...destined for a thrift shop (can you believe that?!?! I just couldn't let it happen) from a deceased friend's estate leavings..predating 1920... I have taken it apart....the base of it alone is a plain plate of ivory rectangular shaped 3/8 inch thick x 4 1/2 inch wide x almost 9 inches long ...and that s just the base...bloody huge ..and am intending it for some work...not sure exactly what yet...really need to think about it ....to utilize all (like I do anyway...nothing ever gets wasted )....of the ivory.
And yeah...it won't be cheap whatever I turn it into...

I have been leaning towards a knotwork bordered knotwork animal (zoomorphic) scene carving all over it...and make a universal case out of it...suitable for any small device. Not sure yet if that is the direction yet tho.

Other news:
everythings A-OK with the final touches on the sandwich part thus far.

Hopefully there will be enough interest in making copies...otherwise...sad but... I'll just call that a day and enamel the model for my own device for a bigger batt. and additional ports.

After I'm finished said part I'm going to continue on with my original project which was the case I was working on out of antler which would accommodate the expanded n900/neo900 (can't wait :D) have proper carved-in spot for tripod mounting etc...and ergo. fit for forearm for strapping to the arm....finish 'er up with nice detail carving (decorative carving is what takes a looooong time there...takes the most time in fact....compared to making the case...let alone any structural work..which really took very little time....).on my own time I've carved pieces that have taken days, weeks, months, even years to finish...I'm not going to spend years on this case though...I want to use it :D. Excited about it's completion....

Heya Peter! :D
Just popped in from the shop to grab a mouthful of food noticed you posted ...figured I'd say ... " WAAAZZZAAUUUP!! " :D
how you doin' man?

Hmm...which way-cool awesomeness exactly?
-the N.C.S. part for n900/ neo900?

-the potential for cool-@ss hybrid bodies and cases outta resin / antler dust with (hey... who knows how that'll work out.... maybe just plain?...or possibly)carved art work (by making a delicate wafer thin pierced carving and fixing it with a thin layer of epoxy to the plastic back of any old body-back that was going to be used for mold work...casting that ...and make wicked pattern-imprinted hybrid resin/ antler dust bodies?...huh..now that is an interesting idea...)

-the funky-dunky case I was working on before the sandwich part kinda consumed me...(which I will get back to shortly...I swear mah fingers and gut got the itch worse than a junky once I sink my brainstem into any carvin' project :D) ?

or the ivory I'm wondering what to do with?

I personally think all the above is way-awesome :D it's hard to pick for me...(welllll maybe not so hard for me)...but ya man..if you could.....narrow it to a specific point of reference in cool-factor please :D .
..ok filled mah face..grabbin' a work-beer ...goin' back to the bench...I'll be back in I dunno...later...a buncha hours.

Huh, even that answer was way longer than expected ;)

I would pick an antler/resin body as the coolest.
The sandwich idea you should bring to joergrw/dos1's attention.
What exactly is the N.C.S (missed that)?

Enjoy your work beer (and of course the after work one/two too). :)

--
forgot about the awesome graving/carving!!!
But that would need a backcover replacement (or just a little bit on the snadwich/body part).

hey endsormeans,
don't go too leete with mass production of the elk-mugen yet, you might not find the time for producing the prototypes (and all of the few hundred?) spacer frames for Neo900 :D
[edit] btw a translucent keyboard frame would allow Neo900 to place several nicely useful indicator LEDs there, think capslock/Fn indicator, whatnot else

Well I really didn't want to disturb you guys..
I know you are busy...and when you have time...or if something changes design wise with the neo...I'm sure I'll be able to accomodate....
Your spacer is between the screen and body correct?
This part (N.C.S. part) is between back AND back cover...but I would imagine with enough time I could do whatever other part or parts to accommodate whatever the need. :D

Ok brief (or as brief as I'm able :D) rundown

-spacer part (N.C.S. part ...short for N/Neo 900 Clubhouse Sandwich)
-working as well on (artistically) carved case for N/ Neo 900 which ergonomically will fit forearm (think Leela's wrist comp/ bracelet from Futurama :D) and have ability to be used with mount screws like tripods...for example.
-think of said spacer....case...body ...physical parts ...enhancements to existing...designing NEW next gen bodies...is possible as well.
The videos on the mini site show the durability and strength of the original material (antler) which in it's natural form is 1/2 or even a 1/3 as strong as taking antler...turning it to powder...mixing it with synthetic resin...colouring to suit desire...clear, opaque, solid ...ANY COLOUR...and making desired parts ...bodies ...cases...whatever out of a super-duper resilient hybrid combination of the two.
As I show in the videos the demonstration of abuse is done to 3 pieces out of 7 I made and lost 18 years ago....found them 11 years ago ..partially and fully buried...surviving 7 years...7 winters of enviromental abuse....THEN I really put them through the wringer....at the bench in the videos and then with a car.
So...imagine what we could do....If desired...I could carve a durable Master copy that can take multiple mold processes...even very very very hot mold processes...for making cheap resin/ antler dust parts...cases...bodies...
I can if desired do embellishments...which can be cast the same way...
Or our existing plain plastic body parts can be mold and cast into hybrid resin / antler dust parts...in any shade...any colour...any opacity or translucency desired. VERY CHEAP...it is a very inexpensive process with very inexpensive material and labour and shop costs with a very high... very rapid turn out
I was casting STRAIGHT from antler into silver....very hot...when I was a child...I was doing resin works from antler by my 20's...now I like to just make the original stuff ....let others do the actual production from the original.

Sky is the limit boys.
Imagination is the limit.
The cost is minimal...a fraction compared to other methods
The only limit that can be dictated... is the amount of interest by community.
Hit me with an idea...a schematic...if it has physic dimension it is probably doable as a Master in antler. From there...well...the door is wide open. :D

Like the harp dos ?
:D
I make true celtic harps...wire strung...(largest I make) that size has almost a full piano range shy of an octave...it stands 2' 8" weighs in at 28 lbs and is made of real fine good hard maple....tri laminate pillar and neck ...mortise and tenoned ...sept -tupple laminated sound board and back...on the neck..the machined tuning pins are 1/4" tapering to 3/16" ..the holes through the neck are exact to allow said taper..you tune by using the tuning key and tighting or loosening the string AND pushing or pulling the pin in or out...wood expands or contracts thus...snugging the pin firmly...better than gears and delicate machinery ...if the pin gets too loose from wear and tear....detune the string ...pull the pin out...grab a whittling stick and a pocket knife...whittle a while until you have the perfect shim...the perfect sized wedge of scrap wood..put the pin and the shim. with a bit of wood glue on the outside of the shim where it will contact the inside of the pin hole...tork it in...let it dry...string it back up tune it.....away you go...no necessity to take it for expensive repairs :D
servicing the strings occurs through the back of the soundbox...detune the string in question from the peg on the neck...access the string and remove replace strings from the back...the back is brass hinged...brass hasped and has a cute little tiny brass lock :D
The inside is the cavity for resonating sound...servicing strings is simplicity....and the soundbox is big enough for a lunch for 2, a bottle of wine and a couple glasses...or if travelling...sheet music, your n900/ neo900 and all your chargers...extra food...flask of what's important :D ...extra clothes and socks...a travelling companions best friend this type of harp. Toss it on your back got everything in it like a backpack...and away you go into the world with your music with you :D
When I was young...it packed with my tools and away I went...I can't recall anyone ever turning away a harpist ...a meal...a bed... a song...everyone thought (including myself :D) it a godsend to have it show up at their door or their farmhouse. Good times.
Sounds WICKED with a pickup plugged into a laptop run through say any good old rendering prog. ..or....like say...milky for n8x0 :D
or say sunvox on the n900....:D
.eh...whatever...make it sound like ANYTHING you want...then pump it out an amp...BWEOWOWOWOWOW! Makes hendrix sound like fumble-fingers :D Used to have a group when I was young and crazy and all the time in the world....now I'm just older and crazy with all the time in the world :D

That harp...in particular...it's one of a few I have kickin around still.
THAT harp...didn't take long to make...9 months...made it 28 years ago...it has yet to mature..."to belly" on the soundboard...it'll be 8-9 hundred years before it comes near it's prime.
THAT harp...the carving...the knotwork ivy on the sides is an exact mirror image of itself on the other side...the particular style is ....odd....it is old...predating christ by 5000 years...not alot was done in the style...it took a couple years of planning and design...alone...and that in spare time...then in that hard maple....it took 10 years and countless numbers of tools destruction to accomplish it....for ever animal...2 carving tools died.
This is the result.
Better still than this harp is my own....with mad antler inlay embellishment
Mine is slightly smaller...1 octave again less...(no choice considering material)
See...there are a set number of woods considered specifically sacred for creating a true harp ...and those wood types dictate the soul of the instrument...what direct and subliminal impact and influence on the listener can be achieved...what the instrument will really sound like as well....and most importantly ...how it will steer the player...psychologically, intellectually, and spiritually....(I may speak on the mathematics of persuasion and influence concerning instrumentation and sound ...in a vid on the mini site.)
My harp...well....originally a very old very tiny violin maker friend of mine gave me a pristine 70 lb block of wood...he had been curing it for about 20 years...didn't have a purpose for it...and gave it to me....(he has sadly he is dead...I miss him like I miss so many others...I would have liked to show what I made with it)...anyway I carried the thing around everywhere with me ...One of the few things I couldn't let go of....20 years after he gave it to me...a very young man...I finally got the nerve to saw it up ...every piece I utilized...even the dust...I still have pieces from it to work....THAT was hairy work I'll tell you...40 year old seasoned wood...pristine...unmarred....made the most sublime harp I have ever made (and I have some pretty cool stories there about resulting harps I'll tell ya :D....like the ghost harp I made...the thing PLAYED back to you! It freakin Accompanied your playing...it had a natural echo that subtly altered when playing back to you....one of the most beautiful...weirdest harps EVER...)....anyway. back to topic.....my harp...my own...is an Apple harp ... "Querterion" ...seeker...hunter of questions.....qwerty - the question.. Quert - the old old name for Apple...for very good reason. The tree of questions and answers, the tree of wisdom...true knowledge, the tree of love, by some the tree forbidden, but most of all the tree of healing...real healing of the mind and heart...of the soul...and the tree of the only refuge...the tree of peace, it is the only haven I have ever found in all my hunting through the vastness of esoterica and exoterica ...with the answers I hunted most of my life for...and her sound...it is ..beautiful...the only word to fill the feeling...hmm from the proportions of her structure to the content of the embellishment on her...I worked what I have come to understand...the truest sciences ...sacred geometry, creating things based on true measurement...infinite measurement that can help weather time....harps are meant to be built thus in fact...there is an incredible amount around us... to wonder at..hm.. the music of the spheres...the underlying nature of...nature ...ha ...hmm ...so very much indeed......o my yes...she goes with me everywhere. for multitudinous reasons...which I may chat on another time....

I'm glad you like that maple harp there...she is nice...sounds beautiful...the carving style is odd...old......few harps I name ...this one took so long and the intent so specific...it got one considering the content ...she doesn't have an owner yet...no huge push to find the person for her either...however long it takes.

So ya dos thanks ....I am humbled and appreciate that approval of yours. :D

ok back to bench time.

2pm: summer work-beer time!
and it is warm enough! woo-hoo!
Got 1 in mah hand ..back to the bench. :D

Fantastic!

Yes, our spacer part is supposed to go between the screen and body.

By the way, FYI - GDC resumed some efforts to get "case kit" for GTA04: http://lists.goldelico.com/pipermail...ne/005717.html
Maybe a next target for you? :D

Maybe a next target for you? :D

Spacer 'tween screen and body? ...good. :D

Hmmm ..GTA04 body?....easier than the n900 body.
Yup. It can be done.
Alot more room for embellishment too. :D
Hmmm....ya...as example the n900... I have one... so I was able to roll over the n900 in my hands see it in my head ....then work and shave away and carve away that part in less than 2 days...then the finicky work really began.
With everything I do...a 1st hand model is easiest and quickest for me ...I'm tactile rather than schematic when it comes directly to carving....especially fitting things together ....regardless of how much a jigsaw nightmare it is.
If I have an example of whatever... to work with ...and enough antler material...whatever can be made with any other material..I can make..... whatever is desired...
Then make a mold from it ...casts...away you go..
.Always best... is the fewest parts (esp moving ones)...the simplest design...tends to last the longest.
Hmmm I remember seeing a youtube vid of a gta04 (?) I think in a wood body...clever...simple...good idea for a soul who has some skill....and enough drive. Whatever works in a pinch.
:D

Yup make a master...which then could be taken and cast into resins or plastic...or whatever...
I love a good project.
Ya ...I could do it...
I could make a model case for the gta04...
1000x easier than the N.C.S. part for sure.
I would need a junker tho' ..
doesn't matter if it works or not..
.just gotta have all the physic. that is to be expected...
.I could make a plain master model case right quick..
.hmm...could carve the SHR symbol / pattern on the case.....
ooooooh ....could do alot of cool things.

Hmm...ok got the Gorillaz cranked (what ?!...figure I ONLY listen to classical? heehee...)....got the essential work-beer....goin back to the bench..stuff to think about.

:p Damn, I can't figure out whether the OP needs a medal or a renewed prescription of lithium.........

Back for more work-beer...hmmm

A medal made of Lithium perhaps? :D

This is fine and all...given an opportunity and no need to make the triple decker....means after completion...I will then be able to make exacting measurements for ports to be cut (possibly) on the Master...or simply leave it clean for that kinda stuff to be decided by the individual (prob best.)....or I could carve geometric pattern along the entirety of the sides with and work designated blank spacing between said pattern (key pattern knotwork ....love the pattern) to give the whole piece ....when put together the look of designed purpose for every (uncut blank) port. That would run me a bit longer...possibly a week...maybe longer.

Hmm.....the most critical thing for the community in my most humble estimation is to use every available method of finding a resin working guru who knows his stuff...that is critical. Absolutely.
This part and so much more that could be done for and by this community could be done very affordably...
when I say that I mean...say your device takes a severe impact...the resin should absorb the impact...your device at worst comes apart and the resin piece is damaged or destroyed having absorbed said impact...and cheap enough to shrug your shoulders and order another.

make the piece out of antler dust/ resin...the piece will still absorb the impact but will most likely survive...where your existing case may not.
Replace EVERYTHING with antler dust/ resin body....well...watch those stress tests again on those 18 yr old pieces that weathered 7 years buried outside through winters and then were brutally tested by me...amplify the resiliency a few times and THAT is the result....no more fear for your device. WHATEVER device it is....bodies for the n770 up to the n9 could be made...cheap.
A better Jolla body...whatever......cases ...enhancing attachments....Incredibly resilient...incredibly strong...incredibly lovely to look at...and ...last a long time.
Long time? what is that to me?
longer than 10 000 year radioactive half life...longer than diapers in the landfill....longer than both combined.....if you want an ethical and moral alternative...this is it.
I have done countless pieces ...literally ...in my lifetime thus far.
My work is on every continent...from small to elaborate...if only 1/10 of my work survives the ravages of time...it is still 1000's of pieces.
My name means nothing in the face of time...it will be forgotten ...long before my works start falling apart..
What means something... is leaving as much loveliness behind ....flooding the world with it. Virtually indestructible. Lasting 10's of thousands of years....that is what I intend to leave behind me...everyone here now has the opportunity to do the same.

Anyway back to topic...
...just imagine what I could make as a Master for mold work.
If it is physically ....structurally possible for it to exist...even very thin...very delicate....Then it is possible for me to make it.
I enjoy a challenge....
I enjoy making something different and new...
But I REALLY like to embellish the different and new.
I will make cases and stuff...but mainly so I can do some wicked carved motif on it...that is why I really like to do this stuff .
No matter how perfect....a plain case....a plain body...is just a plain box....boring. I'd lose interest rapidly if I couldn't carve pattern or animals or people all over it...or in scenes...

hmm...forget the medal...just pass the Lithium please.

Re: Affordable Mass Production of Parts for the Enhancement of All Our Devices

Ahead of sched.

Here we go...

Only need to clean a few deet edges and she is done.

I started this years ago...all told I couldn't have spent more than a month on it.
Unfortunately at the time (and since) ...I hadn't stumbled into any more moose antler ...so it was from leftover pieces that weren't really prime material IMO that I decided to make this . I cannot call it the most "level" box I've made ..because of the back...(I call it a back instead of a "bottom" because I enjoy looking at it as much as looking at the lid :D)
Light as a feather...but very strong....the walls, back and lid are 3/16 " at it's thickest down to less than a 1/16 " at it's thinnest.
I purposefully made this as proper containment for my devices for my desktop...as seen from this photo...

http://s26.postimg.org/4rvavmgbd/inside.jpg

I have doubled-up some green leather I am debating lining it with...torn between leather or felt...hmm

anyway...this "device repository" I made to hold my n800's...but I made sure the width and height of this container could accommodate a Pandora device.
So consequently....
this lil' beauty will hold 2 n800's comfortably with room to spare...
or will hold a Pandora,
or a Pyra,
or a few n810's ,
or a few n770's,
or a few n9's,
or a few n950's,
or a few Jolla's,
or a few n900's as equally well.

It can just as easily hold any single said device a charger and connecting cable perfectly fine. (except for the Pandora or Pyra...this container isn't THAT big to put a charger and cables as well inside....I think anyway...I personally don't have a Pandora so I couldn't know if I could get all the peripherals in with it. But based on the Pandora/ Pyra dimensions she will fit no prob)

The content of the carving however is another matter.
for example ...I decided to go with a un-baroqued (:D) simple clean key-pattern border surrounding not just the sides (I am STILL tempted to go crazy and a ton of intricate finer detail...but am restraining myself...I do need to clean the edges of the bandwork and polish the whole surface of this creation ..though)...

http://s26.postimg.org/mteftfac9/cor...w_of_sides.jpg

and decided it was apt to continue with the same pattern (of course )
on the lid...I did however run into problems with my model.
Tempestuous...willful...feral little darling she is...and she bubbled-out my border after settling into it. No harm done though...turned the border a freakishly cool way..interesting pattern she curled up into too ...eh?..
A common enough pose in european work ....with just a bit of persuading to get my model "vulning" (a heraldric posture- simply put......to tear at the breast...) as well.
In all... accomplishing the "ae" logo of the Maemo symbol.

No entity should have an issue with this usage since "ae" is a common and not proprietary symbol ...
I'm not using "the proprietary colours"
also there is enough distinction between my lid pattern and the official logo to definitely be considered different
as a topper... I don't believe the Oxford Dictionary has allowed anyone exclusive patent rights on the usage of "ae" ...yet.
(Pardon the extended disclaimer (:D) )

http://s26.postimg.org/tnoqj42zd/lid.jpg

I've had to keep feeding her stupidphones...ever since I found her....just to keep her calm. She HATES locked crap. hehe...like any one here does eh? :D

Unfortunately ....though she was obliging for modeling for the lid...and I did explain to her it was a "frame" not a cage or a prison...when it came time to model for the back...she broke the border frame...and decided it was time to finish eating the stupidphone I promised her..I captured the moment for posterity. :D

http://s26.postimg.org/k1v62tbtl/back.jpg

the Latin in the scroll at the bottom she is gripping translates as ... " Freedom or Death" .....apt ...and I concur.

I shall discuss at length ...later my lovely model.

next...to express in a better vein ...not only how thin and yet strong this material is...here are the lid and back held up in front of a 20 watt...flor. light bulb.

http://s26.postimg.org/w7kdd7qjd/backlit_lid.jpg

http://s26.postimg.org/ktxu20g0p/backlit_back.jpg

This can then give you some insight as to how I must "see" things when carving....everything brightly illumined essentially will be darkest dark...a negative ...so to speak...once it is properly stained , preserved and finished...it is deceptive though due to the muddy tint of the moose...and varying thickness of the inside and the angle of the light source...but you can get an Idea how I think out what I do from those 2 photos perhaps...
I am thinking of doing an illustration or two...possibly a t-shirt...I do like her pose.
Anyway a little clean-up and she's done.

Her name by the way is R3ND-R (Render) ...I call her 'Ren for short...I have integrated her into a few other pieces as well...but I'll chat about them another time.
From what I've gathered from her gestured communication....her story is quite an interesting one ....but I won't bore those reading this ....

Anywho...If this is what I do when I'm bored.... with scraps from the workshop floor...imagine the cases (possibly I'm making proper fitting ones as we speak), accessories (same again),
and bodies I could be making....

There is no one that I know of who does what I do...to my ability (precious few in that department) and is applying it thus.

I won't say it over and over again about how this can be affordably copied...look and feel just like the original...but with none of the muddy darker blemishes ..just a clean ivory or china white look and feel....indistinguishable from the original. Or in whatever hybrid combination either.

Also....there is a new development and I'll be posting a vid on my lil' site....I think it would be interesting for you to see...not often...very rare indeed ....do I get my hands on what I'll show you...and what my intended thoughts are for it.

I would hope...at the least from what I have just posted.... to see a wee bit more interest from our community here...

More is coming...and each piece is much different in it's purpose than the last.

See...I'm not just a one-off kinda guy.
Make something and that's the last of it.

I don't just do this stuff for breakfast...
I do it before breakfast...
This kinda stuff and stuff you can't even imagine ...is my daily bread.
It's what I breathe, eat and sleep.
It's "what I do".
I would hope my abilities are utilized here...
If not ...too bad...it's not gonna stop me making this stuff...
now that my attention is focused this way...
but someone else or some other entity may divert my attentions ...
at least from here.
Don't get me wrong now...
I love this place...but ...
I've been carving and painting and making cool stuff since I was a kid...
grew up studying methods of construction..curricularly and extra-curricularly ...so to speak...studied under great people..too
Essentially ....I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up...
I knew from the crib.
and so my work takes precedence.
Whoever can distract me with the right incentives and a cool idea I'm keen to...
wins...
until that is done ...
then I'm bored...
and need to make something way-cooler....ad infinitum...
So that's it in a nut-shell guys.

Left out a lotta wordy stuff..
Especially left out R3ND-R's origin story...
All great superheros, icons and mascots.. have an origin story y'know... :D
Another time perhaps...
back to the bench....getting bored with all this talky-talky ...writey-writey.

Update:
Due to an overwhelming lack of interest in production....
Having just finished the fine detail carving and polishing....
This particular item shortly will be readied for staining, fine scraping and finally preservation...at which point it will be unsuitable and unavailable for mass-reproduction.
This particular project soon to be terminated.

Update:
Artifact preserved.
This mass-reproduction project terminated.

New Developments...

I figured everyone should see what I have just gotten...
before I start marking it off for saw work to cut it up into pieces for planned and future work.
Very rare for me to run into...very.
Very rare for most people to ever see... nowadays.

Also... A look into what I intend to do with some of the "new find"
(freakin' wild by anyone else's thinking I imagine....:D)

And ...A synopsis of what I've been working on at the workbench...that is partially or nearly completed.

endsormeans 2014-07-17 20:26

Re: Affordable Mass Production of Parts for the Enhancement of All Our Devices

Finished rough cutting all the elk up...
took long enough...longer work coming....
halving all of it for plates....to work...
save the points and the beams...starting that within the week.

I cut the 1st section off of the moose...
it is flawlessly white throughout...a very healthy beast...exceptional...
the "Maemask" and the full forearm to fingertip bracer will be exquisite...
Already have the patterns and designs in my mind for the pair...
the rest I am chopping up for other ideas....

A few have mentioned I should turn my attentions to certain projects....
but I have heard no word past just that....
and...well... that isn't much for me to work with...
and even less incentive to begin.

I've already created and am creating works I figured many if not everyone at tmo could use...would like....... multi-device in mind even...to appeal to all...and rendered...wild and artistically to boot ...functional art...stuff other communities and device lines could never... ever ...offer.....
and other than perhaps ...a dozen people hitting a thanks button and a few commenting ...
no one seems actually interested in developing anything....
even though I can't remember how many times people have said..."if only someone would make _ _ ..."
...so working on projects others casually mention they would like .........would result in ...what...?

In the immediate ...I will be continuing the fine detail on R3ND-R ...
then cleaning edges and finally polishing the entire surface...
preparing it for it's preservation...
which means it will be preserved with a crushed black walnut paste rubbed into it...
and then the whole of it finely polished and scraped once again and it will be done.
The process of preservation means of course that it will not be available for reproduction ...
since the methods of mold making would possibly strip the preservative...and I will not be doing that entire process twice...

I will be continuing with the creation of said items for our device lines...that and more.....
but it appears I will be making such things for myself...
which I don't mind :D
But ...I had hoped... that I'd be able to get enough interest so others could have this stuff as well ...

I am no masochist ...
and though I make sure others are aware of my skill-set...
I am not interested in self-aggrandizement.. by posting stuff ad nauseum ...with no resulting movement ....

As a consequence ...I do not see a point in running this post any longer since taking photos, videos, and (sparing everyone the) extended posts (hehe :D ) ...do consume time I could be making things instead.

Please do take photos, videos and posts. It's hard to keep up with your stream of content in real time, but it's always a pleasure to go to this thread from time to time and see what you managed to do :)

You can limit the amount and/or length of them to save time... if you're able to ;) but don't cease to produce them completely!

If you want to get some people interested in developing something, I think you should start with a brief and clear "specification" of what and how could be done. Now it's pretty hard to extract this info from all posts - even I'm not sure if I got it properly ;)

Re: Affordable Mass Production of Parts for the Enhancement of All Our Devices

Not interested in turning this post into a "...Look-what-I-carved/ made-today .." Post.
There already is a post like that..."look what I drew on my phone.."..
I am neither that vain nor attention seeking and (no offense intended) more professional than that.

There was a point to all this...applying what I do to facilitate a new (old for me) innovative method for our community to have what they desire at the most rock-bottom affordable price possible..with casting methods that are more efficient and cheaper than fabrication or plastik manufacture. This method Which could be done by anyone with a 10' by 10' room and a handful of materials cheaply acquired and a couple test runs to get mixes right.
The result would be a product more durable than plastic, more resilient than metals...I could make masters carved delicately...they could be reproduced....exactly.
By mixing other materials into the resin mix...the resin then acts as a "binder" ...binding the mixed material like a glue.
In this way... you can have powdered stone, or gem, or antler in the resin mix....it reduces the amount of resin that is needed. As well...the finished product "feels" "looks" and has the weight of whatever the original substance was ...ie- look, feel and be as heavy or light as the antler, gem or stone.... Colouring can be added ...in batch or separate casts for personal preference.
Or just make copies in resin only.....
and add colouring to make it "look" like antler...or marble....whatever the customer wants.
In all it is the optimal method for production in high or low volume production.

I have done such work...many,many,many times over.
In the 1st post I state I'll make master copies for reproduction of whatever community would wish for.
But I'm not about to make individual pieces in assembly line out of antler. it is a waste of antler. a waste of my time and ability. the cost would be high. it is cheaper for me to make a master and then for it to be reproduced using the cheapest and most resilient material and formula possible. This is it. There isn't anything better nor cheaper.
Likewise I also said I work on other different works for patrons...I don't mind spending time doing this for community....but my days of mass production are past...I have no prob with making the masters...some one else can have fun producing copies. I did production ...it was fun... not interested AT ALL now...I spend the time on originals. Community would have to find someone who does resin work or someone here who is intrigued with the process could start.
I have already consumed time, resources and tools which could have been spent in more profitable ventures. Personally I enjoyed the making of things I will enjoy the use of...sadly I do not see sharing any of it due to lack of interest.

Specifically concerning the neo900 spacer...I could do it.
In a heartbeat.
I would only make 1.
I would...never-ever-ever-ever make 100+ carved out of antler.
That 1 could easily be cast ....stupid-cheap.
But I ain't doing the casting.
Judging by community reaction to creating things they could use ...niche or multi-device oriented...what will happen when I make said part?
In the same vein...Gta04 needs a new body concept...turn my attention there? I could do it. In my second heartbeat. And rendered exquisitely to boot ...no device would look as beautiful or elegant...and producible in an affordable resin...coloured, with whatever material combinations the customer desires....
Creation costs of masters is low...since I do not need a warehouse nor an extensive machine fabrication shop...nor computer guided whatever.. I made and make EVERYTHING BY HAND..that being said I can handle nuances ..machines can't ...or cost hideous amounts to do that also being said.. for something dimensionally more complex than a spacer frame...(hell...just to make the sandwich part of mine I needed a n900 to work with so the fit would be exact)...from spec or blueprint would have been well-nigh impossible for me. I explained that. Consequently if a gta04 body design is required I need a gta04 with screen and whatever else would be in the sucker. I don't care if it worked or not...not relevant ....but it isn't getting done by waving a wand...nor from spec or blueprint by me.
And no one is chucking even an old broken freerunner my way to work with?

I like less when people suggest I do something but don't have enough ......conviction...or supply ...or ...whatever.... to hand me broken old devices ...to even start...

I like less ...begging for old broken devices JUST so I could prove a point I don't need proving.

In short it doesn't smell good to me.

In short...the booth which has the free neo900 spacer frame and the free beautifully rendered and carved gta04 body...
both masters in antler... ready for affordable casting...
that free booth is past me and down the hall beside the free beer booth.

I set a timeline...1 month...way past now...for some consensus....
I stated repeatedly how cheap the method....and how the process is done. I have shown my ability and the speed that work can be accomplished in for said production...I even created and am creating accessories suitable for everyone regardless of device...Wickedly rendered to boot.

Option A was chosen: (from post 1)

Option A being....no one is interested.

That has passed and nothing has occurred.
6000 + views up to now tell me there is interest...perhaps ...

I'm not continuing this post for amusement.

Nor am I just going to "make" things for anyone simply on suggestion alone.
If I put out the wherewithal I want to see some reciprocated movement. It isn't just going to be my time, resources, material and cost at risk....however low or insignificant it may be or seem to others. I have no prob believing in the process...I used to do it...anyone can read up on resin casting....I have no prob trusting in my ability to make ...whatever...been making things an awful long time......Involvement at SOME level by others...ALMOST ANY LEVEL OF INVOLVEMENT BY OTHERS in fact...tells me there is at least a base belief ...faith...trust ...conviction. And that would make me feel better ...that would let me know that I'm not just wasting my time .
At this moment ....the lack of interest...of involvement... to me...(regardless of the fact I'm offering the proverbial golden goose here).... sums itself up to smelling bad.

As I said I am going to continue making device line works ....

I just see little relevance in postings, photos or explanatory vids of anything... any longer... here.

It's a waste of my time

Option A being....no one is interested.

That has passed and nothing has occurred.

Well, I do believe there's intrest, but people maybe missed the question in the first post. Furthermore, all of the options you give A/B/C are pretty pessimistic, or else I just did not understand it :D

Oh, now I understand.

But I think waiting just one month for someone capable to organize such production to show up in such a small community is simply too short. As a reference, it's still matter of months till Neo900 spacer or GTA04 case will become relevant and top priority. At least with those two issues it's not about producing anything right now, but rather about finding possibilities for future (or maybe even completely new future projects) - and I personally find your idea brilliant, as mold making has always been a big problem for small hardware projects.

Up to this moment ....other than a few people commenting...I have been essentially shouting down an empty hall.
ANY mention of movement by ANYONE interested in pursuing affordable reproduction ANYTIME within the last month had ample opportunity...6000+ views say plenty have seen this post. but none interested.
Hmm actually there was 1 person interested in a part for a n900/neo900
and a couple of people saying "I should do _ _ ...."

all the above is not enough incentive.
