Anyone using a BB10 device?
 

It's almost been a year since I bought my N9, and I'm starting to get that itch to upgrade. Always seems to happen around a year. Before the N9, I had a Symbian-running Nokia 700, and before that feature phones. So the whopping two smartphones I've owned in my lifetime have run dead OSes. Not that I mind; the N9 is exceptional and the 700 was very capable. But I can't lie, I would really like to own a modern smartphone for the speed. My sister's Moto G is so zippy...while I have no interest in Android, I really do admire how snappy that phone is.

I was browsing Amazon and saw how cheap the new Blackberry 10 flagships have gone - $240 for a new Z10!? I paid more for a new N9 two years after it went on sale!! I can more than afford that. I watched a few videos on the BB10 OS back when it first debuted - watched a few video reviews on the devices last night, and I'm feeling like BB10 might be a nice upgrade from the N9 and Harmattan.

So then I wondered if there was anyone here on the forums who has used both Harmattan and BB10, and how they felt about BB10 in comparison to Harmattan? Hopefully some of you folks can shed some light on it for me. :D

i wasn't an owner of n9 but used it couple of times. now i'm owner of q10.

before i had n900/n8/lumia710/720/nexus4 and i have to say that i like q10 and bb10, it's fast, fluid (with native apps), it's getting updates, there are some devs from symbian/n9 who have ported their qt apps to bb10, so i think it's great idea for you to buy device like this after your n9.

The BBX was pretty good for a phone, and it still holds its own today.

With that said, if you wanted to compare the Moto G and the Z10... they're very even phones!

The G has the same screen but slightly larger at 4.5inch, its noticeably thicker, feels cheaper, has a worse camera, but a larger battery.
The Moto G has a more modern/efficient cpu, but slow and limited to 1GB RAM.
Whereas the BB has more performance and double the RAM.

I still believe that 1GB RAM is enough for mobile devices (if they weren't too bloated !!). And that everything should be crammed into one chip, like what Qualcomm is slowly going for.

And that a Dual-Core approach is best for mobile computing (phones, tablets, laptops) because it increases performance without increasing much power demand. Quadcore is less efficient due to restraints by the OS and the written nature of most programs. #rant)

Yet, Moto G is more user friendly, has a great ecosystem, has all those Apps you want.
BBX lacks many apps, but they can be stolen/pirated and sideloaded (and with a bit of luck) should run *okay* on BBX. However, the performance is lackluster because its emulating an older API level and won't run everything properly or launch it at all.

With that said, the ResearchInMotion Blackberry Z10 runs the BBX OS. Its built on QNX which resembles Mobile Linux/Linux closely but are otherwise unrelated. Its very good.
Think of the iPhone or Windows Phone or N9 level of software performance.... buttery smooth but very powerful.

On the other hand, the Moto G runs the tried and tested Android OS. In fact, it runs it pretty efficiently shaming some flagships out there, still is no match for QNX inside the BB.

You won't be disappointed. I personally believe that BB10 is a great OS if not one of the best out there right now.

The Z10 I have never failed to slow down and the UI is one of the most fluid one I have ever seen. Is also one of the few OSes out there to support multitasking in its proper form.

Issue is BlackBerry itself. They are heavily, understandably, focused on enterprise customers.
Still I enjoy using BB10 A LOT after having used all Maemo devices and MeeGo ones and the Jolla now.

Only gripe I have, is the battery, but that's a removable one, so that's an easy to solve problem.

Do you use Documents To Go on the Z10? How do you like it? Was it included on the device or does one have to pay for it separately?

I have a BB Z10, even if it's not a new device it's very good, with latest FW it's simply awesome.

i have Z10 and I one thing i'm 100% sure that BB10 won't disappoint you. and regular update is another thing to choose BB10 over other phones.

Yeah, I agree.

The PlayBook was pretty much DOA compared to the iPad 2 and Android tablets with ICS.....but its a beast, and it only got better with the updates!

Does blackberry still have that silly blackberry internet plan, or whatever it was which made you to pay $ for having your internet functional. Just wondering. Never bothered to investigate that and not interested enough to look it up myself :P

no not with BB10. with BB10 you can use your regular cellular internet connection. no BB specific internet plan is needed.

Is the platform as open as harmattan is? (ignore aegis because we can bypass it). How much is the platform code is open?

Thanks for the feedback guys. All the talk of steady updates sounds great. :D I think I'm gonna go ahead and pick up the Z10. Thought about the Q10 cause I love that form factor, but I watched a few reviews an they all raved about how great the virtual keyboard was on the Z10.

But now I have to decide if I want a Z10 now, or if I want to keep the N9 as my daily driver a bit longer...

I have a Z30 and I wouldn't trade it for anything --except maybe the coming "Passport". I think BB10 is great though closed. [For the record I have an N9 that I never use now, and an N900 that I still use as a music player. Both seem OLD in comparison.]

I switched from N9 to Z10 a couple of weeks ago. BB10 is really good, the android compatibility layer does its job, and the hardware is solid. As others have said, the battery is weak. Great buy for 200€ though.

My only experience with BB10 was trying in a store in Germany about a year ago. The phone and the OS looks nice and might be a good replacement for N9 if you either can't a Jolla phone.

However from what I've read I would go for a Z30 over the Z10 do to better battery life :)

I use BB Z10. I have had all alternative smart phones over the years. And tried the mainstream iPhone, Android and WP. And I have to say they are all at some point less than fluid, have some lag. Even the iPhone has some lag sometimes. The BB10 NEVER lags, is ALWAYS very fluid. That's what I like about BB10.
And also that the build in PIM apps are excellent. The best PIM apps I have seen since Palm OS. The multitasking also works very well. I don't use android apps much on my device, but is even possible to install apps from Google Play Store if you want to, aside from the Amazon Store.

I am thinking about buying the Playbook as a companion device to the Z10. Do you have any experience with these, using the Z10 with the BB Bridge? How does it work?

yes. BB10's virtual keyboard is the best keyboard you can get on a touch device. typing on it is a joy.

yes Z10's battery life is not great but its much much better now and even getting better with each update.

The PlayBook is an old device by now and gets very little attention from the Blackberry company. The OS on it is pretty limited compared to BB10 both in features and Android support.

Even die-hard Blackberry fans don't recommend buying a PlayBook at this stage. Some suggest buying a Nexus 7 instead.

Z30 screen is bigger and better, as well as you get hot swap for sim. And hw is better.

Hmmm, the bridge feature was meant to be quite a revelation but it took RIM a long time to get it out there, and some people reported some problems. I never had a BB to sync them, so overall I don't know what the experience is like (it was N900 and Desire Z).

To be honest, the PlayBook is pretty outdated now. Unless you can use it in your kitchen or somewhere else as an appliance (mostly for Web browsing, Music playback, or some videos) it should be fine.

As a tablet its sort of thick and sort of heavy. Battery life was good, but don't know how good it would be now since its been years. Batterys eventually die out, and this one isn't removable.

PS the display isn't HD, its glare-y in the sun, and the viewing angles could be better ...at least with today's standards.

The most annoying thing about it is those button arrangement, and how small and shallow those physical buttons are.

... but not a removable battery! I think this is not a problem if the battery fits really 2 days or almost 1 day by strong usage like they say.

Yes, true.
But towards the end of your 2 year contract.... the phone's battery would be pretty stale. And the only way to renew it would be to void the warranty/change it yourself with a third-party battery. Or to send it back to BB for them to "refurbish" it, which isn't always an option.

A battery even like in the HTC Legend is the best of both world.
You get a unibody design, and a replaceable battery!

Agree, but in my country (like mostly in Europe I guess) there are not much people with a 2 year contract, because we buy the phone contract-free, except i-phone users with all-inclusive packages.

well i can't give you the exact list that what languages BB10 support but its does support many languages. Including Arabic, Espanol, Francais, Hindi, Bahasa Indonesia. These languages are a few i have written from the many which are listed on my Z10.

Thanks, but i know this already. I just want to use it to read books in pdf and epub. And I really like the OS (a webOS rip off).

playbook is an awesome media player.great sound.most other tablets sound teeny.But not recommended for pdfs.epubs..maybe.its heavy.
z30 is recommended over z10.faster; better battery.fmradio.no handicapped stl100 version.But watch out for bad simtray.try and buy.

In all bb10s so far android support is lame.very slow.the jolla phone blows it away handsdown.(future update may change that)

Better to use qtcreator probably I used NDK but it's eclipsed(booo java), here the links I find, but never tried to set it, as when I used NDK qtcreator support of blackberry was poor, now it should be much better
