FAQ:
Q: Are you going to make this TOH for sale also or just to make a tutorial?
A: No decision made yet.

Those who follow me on twitter may have seen this short video;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTO2Q3jX8Z8

It is simply RRD-102 V2.0 board attached to MyHalf breakout board. The board contains RDA5807M chip and 32.768kHz crystal and passives for bypass and antenna.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-J...dio-module.jpghttps://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-a...Xq6xXFXXXG.jpghttps://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-p...fmtunerpcb.jpg

MyHalf bare PCB's available through OSHPark https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/6TWMNB35

RRD-102 Boards are available from ebay, aliexpress e.g.
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-...988842002.html

Datasheet can be found here http://www.seeedstudio.com/wiki/imag...sheet_v1.1.pdf

Topview of breakout board

Simply connect the SDA(=DATA) and SCL(=CLOCK) to I2C bus which is converted to 3.3V levels.
3.5mm audiojack to L/R out and GND
3.3V from phone to VDD
Antenna (piece of wire) goes to FM pin
Leave N.C. and RCK pins not connected.

For reference 3.5mm plug contacts:

Sourcecode in my github https://github.com/kimmoli/fmreceiver

This contains minimalist UI with tuning and RDS station name and radio-text display:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-I...0815214355.jpg

For the transmitter side, i did order some KT0803L chips - currently waiting them to arrive:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/QY...=w1035-h827-no

datasheet http://radio-z.ucoz.lv/kt_0803/KT0803L_V1.3.pdf

To get the audio from FM receiver (and to FM transmitter) to jolla audio-system is under planning. More about that when it is time for that.

Subscribed to this thread. Nice idea, be successful. ;-)

It's a pity that you don't do things for (far superior) N900. You got clever ideas :)

Great!! Good work!! I'm very interesting on this TOH.

I'm in.

(And about what Estel said, I do hope you'll do things for the Neo900! N900 is indeed the King, but it's becoming a bit slowish for nowaday's standards. :()

Re: [WIP] FM Receiver/Transmitter TOH

I'd like to see a bunch of these TOH's merged into one uber "kitchen-sink/swiss-army-knife" TOH ;-P
No easy task; I imagine it'd take many iterations of miniaturisation, plus the I2C BUS may start to get saturated.

It might be due that fact i have had no pleasure to own a N900.

Yep. Getting started with one feature/TOH, maybe next will already combine few things.

Yeah I've noticed that most of them are quite one dimensional...
Hopefully you're learning lots & will soon combine many of them (ones that go together best).

STAHP: You are still going Off-Topic. Please.

Re: [WIP] FM Receiver/Transmitter TOH

Transmitter and receiver? Count me in!

Regarding the feature combination, I think it would make sense to (later) split features into groups - then we would have a Multimedia TOH with FM Receiver/Transmitter, IR and a stand, Travel TOH with e-ink, extra battery, handsfree grips etc.

EDIT: The main point of my post is the 'Count me in' statement, not continuing in off-topic discussion :)

How did I mis this one before. One of the best TOH ideas. Have really been missing this since the old Nokia days.

Wow, just got aware of this one.
FM transmitter is one of the features I miss so much from my N900.

This would be so great.

Really nice to see that at least the community is fulfilling the potential that the TOH idea has

Re: [WIP] FM Receiver/Transmitter TOH

Hey,
just got my Jolla a few days ago and I stumbled over your toh idea here. There are some really nice toh projects, but this one really got me. I collected some old fm tuned radios and I use some cheap fm transmitter from ebay to play all kind of devices on them. Would be really cool to play my jolla on them without any external extra devices.
I'm excited for your next progress posts! keep going...

Hello i am very new on this forum.
Any news about the THO with FM Radio?

That were awesome!:D

Re: [WIP] FM Receiver/Transmitter TOH

Can I order a combined QWERTY + FM TOH? FM chips seem to be pretty small. Perhaps, they can fit inside the QWERTY other half.

I still cannot switch to Jolla because it is a feature-limited brick in comparison with N900. I use FM (both receiver and transmitter) almost every day and even do some work using N900 as a pocket desktop. The FM+QWERTY combo would finally get Jolla phone to fulfill its promise.

alfredquack 2015-06-18 18:18

fm radio + keyboard TOH

That would be awesome. As my last soldering experience dates years back I'd prefere buying it.

I like the Idea of being able to switch the covers, but the killer one would be

radio + keyboard + wireless charging

Count me in as a pre-orderer. Hype maximus. My N900 will "fly out of the window" when this TOH is going to ship.
Pssst, place the electronics full length kickstand cover alike N900 back cover. ;)

absolutely same here...
have a lot of old ghettoblasters and i NEED this transmitter to make my music play :P

would also directly buy that transmitteroth...

and thx again for your precious work kimmoli...
actually it feels like you are realising all the oth everybody dreamt off...

alfredquack 2015-06-22 11:00

Re: [WIP] FM Receiver/Transmitter TOH

well, kickstand would be very nice too. I love the sliding mechanism of my nokia n97. But there the display slides, thus the heavier rest (akku, keybord, mainbord etc.) sits on the ground and stabilizes... .

So back to the roots - just a fm radio (as first step) would definitly something I'd buy.

Summer holidays are starting. TOHKBD is taking some resources, but maybe then some FM TOH work...

I'm very interested on this too. I miss this feature from N900. It would make media listening everywhere much easier.
So count me in as a buyer, when you are ready to ship this project.;)

Seems that summer went with all kind of things other than this...

But this is still in the queue.

I am aware that this TOH won't happen anytime soon. But still, out of curiosity: What was your idea to achieve that. Neither I2C nor NFC are a good choice for Audio transmitting, are they? Thanks!
