The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 7 of 7)
The yearly event is back! NOKIA n900 Week 2014!
Next week is the n900 week 2014. I want you to ditch all your new phones as a celebration to the mighty n900 during next week. From Monday 00.01 Oct 6 2014 to Sunday 11.59 Oct 12 2014 (Nokia headquarter time) . I want to see all who is having a n900 charge your phone and join in. I want you to spam this thread with everything you find interesting related to n900 and the use of the device. It will be a revival of the n900 during next week. If you use it as your daily device, even better. Tell us what we can try or what was the last thing you installed. If You don't use it tell us why. If you used it once tell us how it was. If you heard about someone that talked about the n900 tell us who. If you have a great video, image, commercial or other **** with n900 post it. If you planning to buy a n900 transform it to a neo900 tell us why, how, when and why. If you have anything to say about the subject of n900. This is the week to do it and this is the thread. Welcome! You have 7 days to prepare, find (or buy) and charge your n900 until the n900 week 2014 begins. Who will join me in this calibration and celebration of n900 ? |
Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
What if I've already been using my n900 since November 2009 as my daily phone?
Edit: Why is this in the Neo900 subforum? |
Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
I use my N900 in host mode to connect using the amazing RTL-SDR $12 software defined radio USB dongle. The dongle and wire antenna fit on my keychain and I can listen to air traffic control while I wait in the FBO for my rental airplane to be prepared.
I am looking forward to ADSB(dump1090) to be compiled so I can watch the radar transponder tracking of nearby aircraft so I can see if friends are in the air. The N900 is what happens when a major phone corporation orphans a development project and they end up making insanely awesome phones for tech savvy end users rather than building dumbed down money pits to be exploited by phone companies. |

I'm always in a hurry so I simply thought I posted in n900 forum which I didn't do. I take full responsibility for that and Hope some mods can correct my mistake and move to n900 sub forum. |

Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
Hi
I have been using my N900 since day one and i stil use it everyday mostly because of the build in FM transmitter ( and some other cool stuff).. I enjoy the usage of my n900 very much and every time i pull it out people tend to ask questions about it... What is is it ? what does it do ? can you call people with it i think you guys know what i'm talking about (at least i hope lol).. We came along way with the N900 and i'm happy to be apart of this community... I code HTML/CSS/Javascript and getting the n900 and reading and learning about it on this forum definitely boost my knowledge and coding skills.. I also own a N9 and a Jolla.. But the N900 is where it started so thanks Dave for starting this EPIC thread... Kind Regards J Neutron |
Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
Got my N900 in February 2010 and I'm using today because there still is no other device that can replace it. I did use Harmattan for about a year and a half but I ultimately can back to the N900 as it can't be beaten. The awesome work going on to upstream kernel patches is what makes me believe it still has a bright future and is the very thing that has made my pet project possible.

Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
Quick reply...
In the best case, I will have battery re-charged for N900 by the next week. It would have been useful to find full-body armour for N900, which would be inseparable like second skin, and protectful. Best wishes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Per aspera ad astra... |

Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
I stumbled onto this thread today and smiled. I love my N900 and still use it on wifi. I just purchased another battery for it about a month ago and was grateful I was still able to find a battery.
We may not be as visible, but we are here quietly rockin' our beloved N900. It still "lives long and prospers" in my hands... A big "cheer" to all my fellow N900 lovers :)!! |
Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
How do people still use a N900 as a daily phone? The USB port in mine is borked, but I have an external charger for the battery so it can still function. Fired it up a few months ago before I moved to my Nexus 5 and I found it slow as ****. The few minor things that make it unique just aren't worth the hassle of a phone that is now just too limited.

Did you flash it? If it is slow and running "off" that can help. But if you find it "limiting" it might not be worth it to you - it can all depend on what you want and need from a device. |
Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
I use it as a daily phone but am constantly on the edge of giving up due to it being unreliable. Starting the phone program, it will sometimes freeze-blur, unless you disable autorotation. It cannot send or receive messages reliably - the database will get messed up and then I have to fix it. Internal errors...And I just want to do something phones could do decades ago - make calls when I need to, send/receive SMS when I need to, not later.
But since this is N900 week, let me end with haiku: song of the dependencies USB port trembles command line dreams at dawn |
Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
I still use mine as a daily phone.
I have just about filled the 64G sd card with music, & I listen to it in the car via the FM xmtr. Neither of my cars has bluetooth. I use a number of other apps on it often, too, like Firefox, Modrana, PyOBD, Symfonie, gpodder, cuteRadio, etc. I've never had a problem with the USB port, but the slider switch is now inop & the screen is getting eczema & is having trouble reading touches at the upper left corner. I literally cannot function without the internet clock radio created via shellscript, alarmed, & kmplayer. I have never been able to wake up reliably until I put this together. |

Trust me, I have tried about a dozen phones, mostly Android, but also, more recently, Nokia N9 and Jolla. Some of them load a web page noticeably faster, which makes them perhaps more suitable for passively consuming information, but try to do anything as advanced as e.g. replying to the thread and... oh boy, a trouble! Doing anything even remotely active without a proper keyboard is such a PITA that, having read the forum on a "more modern" phone, I always reach for my trusty N900 to type a reply. Such as this one. BTW, you do not look like such a Nokia fanatic now, having defected to the dark side :) |

One of my N900s is running on CSSU-Thumb, overclocked with minimum freq 500 and max freq 805, and it is just fine. Also, try to reboot often or use something like ereswap or flopswap to avoid performance issues due to swap file fragmentation. |

Estel recommended a while back to do the USB port connector solder fix, and I have been thinking about it more lately. I just need to buy a quality set of precision screwdrivers and a small tip soldering iron first. |

N900 is still my daily phone, BTW. In the spirit of the occasion, let me extol the merits of N900 for me, as a superb entertainment center. - As you mentioned already, replaceable storage! Great to store tons of music or video. iDorks can only dream. ;) - Great format support, thanks to N900's FOSS nature. Play anything that the hardware can handle, basically. - As you just said, FM transmitter! I have set up my N900 with the hacked driver that unlocks the transmission power, and I have a desktop widget to boost the power to 118, which makes the signal very clear in my car. - cuteTube. Awesome YouTube player (and DailyMotion, and Vimeo). Easy to also download any video, or music. Perfect compliment to the massive storage capacity of the N900 (Transmission bit torrent client also says Hi ;) ) - Amazing headphone out. Great sound quality, and able to drive headphones easily. Also, add to it Rockbox and a set of good cans like the Sony MDR-7506. and you basically have an amazing audiophile portable music system. - Video out quality is superb for being analog. I use mine to watch movies on a DLP projector on a 70 inch screen, and it's like a portable theater in your pocket. - FM radio capability. - Transmission torrent client. ;) - Ability to easily record system audio. Now, this is just a small facet of the N900 (entertainment functionality), but one where it shows that it's still better in many ways than phones released 5 years later. I really hope the Neo900 project is successful. And to think that if things had been different we might now have a full array of devices (phones and tablets) running the newest generation of the Maemo OS. Screw you, Elop. |

I am using my N900 this week. Every night I charge the battery, and a spare, as I have a broken USB port (which was the reason I started using my N9 as my main phone). And I am rediscovering the amazing camera apps the N900 has.

(before you say something: at least I don't have a car) Attachment 35870 From a user perspective everything seems so easy with the N900 from typing to select stuff, transferring and managing files, it has plenty of viewing modes, centralized IM accounts, the user interface flow is second to none. I don't need to tell that to all you verterans. With the other phones I tend to wait till some task is done, the N900 invites you to keep up queuing tasks (and then forget about them and wonder why the device is so damn slow all over sudden :D ) I stopped using it as a phone for no reason but the better camera in the 808. And to support Jolla. But N900 is back with a vengeance as cult device. Because of this initiative I have it on my desk enjoying the great convenience of the future proof internet radio that works with direct links. Also the buffering of the internet radio is better in area's with weak internet (compared to Symbian and hardware internet radio Audiostream 10) The sound quality is a true relief after the shreak of the Jolla speaker. Since I refused to update skype by Microsoft on OSX and Windows, it is now one of the few devices I can use my Skyp account on. Also it serves as a remote for my early 2000s JVC amplifier suffering jumping hardware volume button and lost original remote. The form factor is just great. What is there not to love: small and with actual borders that offer great fit in any hand. And no, trying to bend it with your skinny jeans will only rip your jeans and expose your bottocks or worse ;) |

Re: The mighty n900 week 2014 (Day 0 of 7)
I'm permanently back on the N900 now after a while away.
Bought my first the day they arrived in the shops but sold it after 2 years. I was drawn to the big screen of the galaxy note. Bought another about a year ago on ebay which soon developed the sim card problem, which although i initially fixed it, it eventually became permanent. I bought my 3rd off ebay 3 weeks ago and it's a real beaut, 1 careful lady driver and hardly a mark on it. There was so much i missed about it, and only a couple of things the note was better at. I now use it as my everyday phone and keep the note for reading the news apps. My only problem is that i cant install one or two apps because of missing dependencies (libxxs1for example)... If i can't work it out i'll come back and ask for help, I'm a little rusty! I've kept the sim-problem one for testing :-D Incidently, is there anywhere we can get hold of the old ovi store apps? There are one or two i quite liked. I've found a site with all the games (including Angry Birds level packs) but although I've downloaded them i can't seem to find anyone to pay..... Anyway, good to be back and delighted to find this site still alive and kicking :-D Happy days |
