Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

Hello i just saw in this page
http://n8delight.blogspot.com/2014/0...light-v14.html

They are making this petition
http://www.change.org/p/nokia-corpor...he-environment

So i just thought if we can make a similar thing to request nokia to release the source code of the closed source packages for maemo
Maybe this will be as a base code for developpers

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

There is precisely ZERO chance of that happening (for Symbian or Maemo) regardless of any petition. Which is why I (and others) are working hard to reverse engineer key pieces of the N900 software stack to understand how they work and so they can be changed.
I am 99.9% done with MCE (one function is not quite there but it may not matter) and work is being done to reverse engineer the closed source pulseaudio blobs among other things.

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

There is a greater chance that the leader of North Korea will hold democratic elections than of Microsoft releasing any code of any sort (including header files or dev info) for ANY non-Windows-Phone Nokia hardware.

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

Definitely it would be extremely nice to have the blueprints/source code, but I doubt that Satya and Co. would be so generous.

One question. Who really now owns Symbian and Maemo (also MeeGo)? Microsoft or Nokia (not that Nokia which Microsoft purchased). Source codes, trademarks everything related to these two OS's.

Yeah this was what I was going to ask. I haven't kept with MS or Nokia lately so I don't have any idea.
Not that it really matters as I don't see either company handing the source code.

True. These petitions wont help. And i don't know about Maemo but Nokia once handed over Symbian to Accenture. They were responsible for the bug fixes and updates.

Yeah i know and thank you for the time and the effort you make for maemo , i was just wondering that if you had the source codes you would have made maemo bugless :)

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

This is like stepping on the sleeping lion's tail.

All what these petitions will accomplish, if anything is to remind to MSFT to take action to bury the source code even deeper.

It is better to let MSFT forget that there ever was a threat by a desktop style, open Linux running device combining the best camera and hardware emerging as the only potential iPhone killer.

Is there anybody that believes all MSFT was after was the best hardware platform or the name of Nokia which they recently ditched?
Pureview? degraded to "just good enough" camera tech. Threat neutralized.
Naughty OS gone, hardware captured. Two birds, one stone.

Better stay under the radar and hope for a friendly, well timed source leak to happen soon.

For Symbian there might be a straw of hope in reminding certain EU politicians about their intentions in 2010 and the threat by foreign spyware OS taking the place of the Symbian OS. (post 2013 "revelations")

The SymbEOS was scrapped in 2011. And EU cancelled its 22 million funds. See http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/...t_scrapped.php

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

This is yet another prime example.
Time and again....it comes right back to this fundamental.

To initiate, maintain and grow something good...and most importantly ...keep it.

Don't put your faith, hope, money and trust in a corp. to do it.
Don't put your faith, hope, money and trust in (a) government(s) to do it.

They both have their own (completely and understandably justifiable) motives, agendas, politiks, issues of accountability to investors/ shareholders, pandering/ catering to multitudes of jackdaw consumers with a desire for pretty shiny things (as well as so many more base survival issues) and many more priorities which [at some or many point(s)] are and/ or aren't at odds with what that populace really wants or needs.

Consequently many talk of "reliability", "stability", "longevity" and many more "-ity's" ...
well ..sanity dictates...corp. and gov't are the last places to look for it.
You'd think (as an intelligent species) we would have caught on by now...after so many disappointments by the same organizational models over and over again.

Rather...
Invest in good people.
Invest in your friends.
Invest in your community.

The fundamental Question:
Who really understands... knows... what you want or need and can deliver it?...

The most obvious Answer:
The talented people standing right next to you ...
Who want or need the same things too.

ok...I'm done...burned mah soapbox :D

Funny, few years ago would agree wholeheartedly, but... ms is trying hard to change its appearance now:
http://www.thestar.com.my/Business/S...softs-support/
@bc3tech: #justSayin RT @mattwallaert: #Microsoft signs #student #privacy pledge; #Apple, #Google refuse. http://t.co/SGblIqF7tw #fb #in
@javispedro: Out of MS's Wireless Display Adapter, Google's Chromecast, and Apple's AppleTV, who do you think uses an open standard? #rolereversal

So if that was marketed correctly to their PR dept, who knows, costs are probably low for a good PR move

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

The difference is that in those areas it benefits Microsoft to support those things (especially when a competitor like Google isn't). Even their efforts to support Linux in the cloud are necessary because if they dont, everyone will go to Amazon or someone else for their cloud needs.

On the other hand, supporting anything for the N900 has zero benefit to Microsoft (since supporting the N900 will not earn them any future revenues and if anything, will hurt them)

There is benefit in turning their image, like they tried with IE for millions of dollars. Costs them nothing in comparison as they have legal dept 24/7. Pushing fake image works but costs lots of bucks. Doing something actually benefitting open source would be harder to blame on MS trying to PR it up (yeah just a gimmick; no, look they actually gave us the source, this is great...). There's nothing undermining their business here (unless the mountain of cash from samsung is based on those maemo bits) and actual real boost to their 'hi new Microsoft here, not the bad guy you think you know, now apple/google are, look we care'

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

It undermines their business in that it benefits a competitor to their Windows Phone offerings in the form of the Neo900. (and potentially gives other competitors access to some of the things that made the N900 good)
Not to mention any 3rd party code they used and cant release for that reason. And any proprietary algorithms/info they cant (or wont) reveal (e.g. the secret algorithms used for the audio stuff or the secrets of how to talk to the cellular modem or the secrets of how various bits of 3rd party hardware work or the secrets of how the N900 talks to Microsoft email servers (details that Microsoft doesn't want to share for obvious reasons)

There may even be things they cant release for legal reasons (e.g. the wl1251-cal daemon used to pass configuration information to the WiFi chip, releasing the code for that might make it possible to configure the WiFi chip to use different country settings than they should be using which would then cause the chip to act in ways that are illegal)

:D
I'm sure neo900 is on MS horizon as a competitor

That's why I mentioned legal 24/7, they can easily check which code is licensed how, which Nokia bits can be open sourced (when selling to MS Nokia must've inventorised what is theirs, no?). Let them leave the problematic bits. Still would be plenty to give out

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

It's been 3 years since the last update and since then we've seen Maemo servers shut down and go through a change of ownership. At this stage, I'd say there's a good chance that the infrastructure that was used to maintain Maemo source code has already been junked with the code being lost forever.

I agree with many things said in this thread but this one is highly unlikely. I would not believe for a second that MS would lose or throw away anything, even if they never use it.

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

Truth.
second that emotion.
Any other entity possibly...but M$ would keep it ...perhaps to study it...for many reasons fathomable and not.
Indeed ...they may even say it was purged ...when it was not.
I concur that it is sitting in their hidden vaults (somewhat akin to the Vatican's vaults) along with all kinds of treasures that may or may not ever see the light of day.
It isn't a dead on example...but kinda close...
lookieloo at what happened with Boxee Box Crew (xbmc variant smart tv device...better than appletv, googletv or any of the other smarttv devices frankly...kinda ...the n900 of the smart tv universe :D )
Great idea...great product (til they stupefied and really mucked up their last innovation) but lucked out...kinda-sorta...Smashsum (samsung) said "looky what we got here" ...made them a deal they couldn't refuse...bought 'em...bam-gone.
'fore they completely shut the lights out and packed the last of their equipment for the move to the new lab facilities...some kind soul released some data that enabled the opening up of the Boxee Box ....now a few souls run that (Boxee +) ...I got a boxee...great tool. installed a xbmc sdcard hack and boxee + for it too...(haven't used it for a bit since I've been using xbmc (t400 to one of my tv's)....huh...actually I really should check in on the forum ...see how things are....
Anywho...you know Smashsum will most definitely utilize what they bought and future tech will have that Boxee smell to 'em...
Anyway there is my rambling story parallel :D

M$ most likely hasn't flushed anything...
Tho we all may wish they had...

I'm sure the Biopsy on the poor screaming maemo stuffs will be a complete success.....
so be prepared for the launch of an evil alternate n900 maemo twin though....
kinda like evil alternate Captain Kirk....but probably worse
Update: just logged in to one of the boxee hacks forums...alive and kickin.....pluggin away at bugs, fixes, updates etc....still.

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

There is nothing about the N900 or Maemo that Microsoft would have any interest in. The hardware is old and obsolete, the design is nothing like what Microsoft wants for Windows Phone (does anyone even make hw-keyboard phones for Windows Phone?). The software is totally different in the way it works to anything Microsoft has (the kernel is different, the middle-ware is different, the UI is different, its all different)

About the only thing from Maemo or the N900 Microsoft might want would be any patents and it would only want those so it can shakedown its competitors for more royalties.

Re: Petition to Nokia & Microsoft

In all honesty, forget about Nokia and forget about MS.

All MS and Nokia are focusing on is:
-fixing bugs in their cloud system, making sure their services do integrate
-getting all their core apps converted to Metro (how the hell have they not achieved this yet, is astounding)
-the Xbone, trying to get it to compete better against the PS4
-building new lackluster Lumia devices
-building Windows 8, scratch that, I meant Windows 8.2, crap I meant Windows 9, no crap I actually meant Windows X, oh **** its actually Windows 10
...to me, MS (just like Nokia) has lost touch with the industry and deserve to do bad.

I mean you have Apple who has great demand for products, and can deliver them.
They've got excellent quality*, and customer services, alongside developer and third-party support.
They have the iPhone, iPad, iWatch, iTV, OSX, iCloud, App Store, Apple Pay, and Apple services all tied nicely. They don't do "too much" but for what they do, they do reasonably well.

Then you have Google.
Who's got Google Search, YouTube, Chrome, G+, Gmail, Maps, Earth and trying to tie all these services in and get them on as many platforms as possible. And not to mention things like Google Cardboard, Glass and Car experimenting with the future. And lastly they have Android which will integrate into Smar****ches, Phones, Tablets, and finally TV units. Not to mention the upcoming Android 5.0 Google L(olipop) update.

These two are behemoths, and MS is a distant third with no plans of catching up.

It would be nice to see a forth contender, maybe if a rich corporate were to unite them, I'm thinking an ecosystem collaboration in terms of:
Ecosystems: --------Google - Apple -------- MS ------------------------ "new runner"
OEMs: --------------Samsung - Apple ------- Nokia ---------------------- Hewlett Packard
OS: --------------------Android - iOS/OSX --- Windows ----------------- Ubuntu OS
Store: -----------Google Play - AppStore --- Windows Store --------- Amazon App Store
Gaming: --------Play Games - AppStore --- Xbox Live --------------- Steam
Search: ---------Google/Now - Siri ----------- Bing/Cortana------------ Yahoo!
Browser: --------------Chrome - Safari ------- Internet Explorer ------- Firefox
Email: ---------------------Gmail - iMail -------- Outlook ------------------ Yahoo! Mail
Messaging: ---------Hangouts - iMessages - Skype -------------------- Viber
Storage: ---------Google Drive - iCloud ----- OneDrive ---------------- Dropbox
Maps: -----------Google Maps - Apple Maps - Nokia Here Maps --- Open Maps
Videos: ---------------YouTube - iTunes ------ Vimeo ------------------- Twitch

Other competitors include Facebook, SONY, Blackberry, HP, Opera Browser, Tango, etc etc that I haven't mentioned, but can do at request.

IMHO, Micro$oft and other USA mobile companies have a great interest to not have any concurrent outside USA. Including USA government interest to control the mobile OS (NSA, etc).

Keeping alive and old mobile OS, made for geeks, doesn't fit with this logic.
