Camera phone competition January 2015:"Animals"

Here's finally this month's camera phone competition!
chenliangchen won again and he chose animals as this month's theme.
Here's what he said about it:

"Although there are still some hibernated, animals will be the first theme for 2015. It could be cute, silly, adorable, surprising, and could be things related. Hope more people could join the competition, and bring us more joys in 2015."

The rules:
Photos must be taken during this month
Photos must be taken by the posting member
Photos must be taken with a camera phone
Users can change the entry only once

Users must name the phone they used
Last three days of this month are for voting

Let's start this year with a fun theme. :)

That's a nice photo, thanks for starting this thread! It's winter here in Croatia so there aren't so many animals out there.

Quick reply...

The same butterfly I have seen before... and met again, today.

The full resolution photograph (+ uncropped version) are here:

I'm afraid EXIF was lost. It was shot with Nokia N900, CSSU-Testing-latest, Auto (not Macro, if I remember correctly - I made several photographs, before choosing best one; Macro was just trying to make it worse, and not focusing properly).

Thank you. Best wishes.

Great photos! Now I'm gonna have to go to the zoo, there aren't a lot animals out there. And it hasn't even started snowing properly. :)

I thought the same. And I still do not expect to see anything greater than the butterfly... Not that the butterfly isn't beautiful, but I do not see a composition here.

It's not snowing here, period. Not even in winter. There was hail, several weeks ago, though...

Thank you. Best wishes.

I don't really like the winter, now it's raining and it will be snowing again in a few days probably.
When there's snow, I can't go anywhere because it's so tall.. When it rains it's muddy. winter? No thanks, spring and summer are fine for me. :)

Lot of nice entries, this month!

Finally, I've managed to get a photo that is at least slightly on-topic for the competition ;)

http://s1.postimg.org/b1anz5ttp/filip_lucek.jpg

The photo was took with N900, cropped on-device with GIMP. Sorry for the noise grain and blue hue, N900 used for taking this shot was using vanilla backcover, and the infamous blue mirror bug got it "revenge" :(

Here, my son strangle hugs grandparent's cat, Lucek. I swear that I haven't done any edits to it - it is how Lucek's eyes looks after reflecting N900's flash, without any alterations/edits to accentuate it.

I call it, in the honor of old e-grade S-F movies: "Colonel Filip and the Sneaky Cats from Mars". Judging by the expression of his face, this particular specimen must be having quite an internal struggle to maintain his disguise as innocent and patient earthling cat ;)

Oh, and I hate cropping. You should already "crop" your photos by composing them well in camera. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't do some minor corrections though. :)

pichlo 2015-01-23 21:01

Re: Camera phone competition January 2015:"Animals"

You do realize that the stock N900 photo viewer can crop too, right?

BTW, I cannot see any picture or a link in Estel's post; is it just me? The thanks in Estel's post and Half's follow-up suggest that at least some people could see it. I've tried MicroB, Sailfish browser and Firefox and... nothing. Just text.

Half-Life_4_Life 2015-01-23 21:37

Re: Camera phone competition January 2015:"Animals"

I didn't say that cropping was illegal. :)
It's just what I as a photographer have to say.
And I went and checked what was in Estel's post, I went to that link where the photo should have been and it opened a site with a picture so I simply went ahead and copied the source img url of that. If that made any sense. :D

pichlo 2015-01-23 22:30

Re: Camera phone competition January 2015:"Animals"

That bit about cropping was meant for Estel ;) Sorry, I do realize it was a bit ambiguous.

And "that link" is exactly what I am talking about. I do not see any link, only some text with blank space that does not react to clicking. Only after your post did I try a Quote & Reply and only that showed there was a URL.

Half-Life_4_Life 2015-01-25 11:14

Re: Camera phone competition January 2015:"Animals"

Yeah, some of those photo sites aren't too keen to let us see the photos without going directly at their site. Use flickr, people! :)
I'm going to send a PM to Estel because I figure he's busy and hasn't seen his mistake yet.

Err, no, you did not ;). Not for me anyway. See below and note the red rounded square where the picture is presumably supposed to be:

Attachment 36450

In your defence, I tried pasting the URL in a way that would show the picture (having copied it first by opening your post in Quote&Reply) but it still did not work. Must be the site restricting a 3rd party access as Half-Life said.

Re: Camera phone competition January 2015:"Animals"

How come it does show the picture for me?
It also showed the picture for me before he edited it?

I don't understand what is wrong with Estel's post...? (yes, even before the edit, it was just showing fine)

pichlo, you better change your browser or see if firewall or any scripts that you have blocks something :)

Hmm. I tried three different browsers: MicroB, Sailfish browser and Firefox. All three from home and from work (i.e different ISPs), all with the same result.

Now I have added a fourth browser to the list, IE. The result is here:

Attachment 36452

There is a slight difference but the picture is still not shown.

One thing all my experiments have in common that is different from yours is that they were all conducted from the UK. Perhaps the content blocking is location based?

I don't think so... I can (cannot) see Estel's post exactly that way on Firefox with or without adblock plus that is the only possible "blocker" i'm using now. Rather, i believe that site is blocking any tries on viewing the picture without visiting it.

I doubt it. The other site does not know that you are a moderator on this site. I think it's more likely to do with your location.

FWIW, I have installed Webcat on my Jolla just to try this out (a very nice browser, BTW, but that's even more OT :)). The result is the same as with IE.

@Half-Life_4_Life. So can I put one single photo here to participate? My first post was "not competition intended". I hope your answer.

Re: Camera phone competition January 2015:"Animals"

Yes, only one photo and you can change it only once with a new entry. Sorry for making this confusing, I'll write it in rules for next month's competition.
To all the others, I've been using adblocker for my mozilla on Win7 for quite a long time now.
I don't know if that is or isn't the problem but before Estel's edit I couldn't see any image.
