exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

what services can be used for video calling on n900 ?
skype in india has stopped calls over pstn within the country similarly my operators voip service is doing the same
i want seamless video/audio calls on n900 as n900 is unable to make use of normal video calls so what options are left on n900 that can call outside of their network like skype i.e i want to be able to voice/video phones that reside in a 3g network and are capable of reciving normal video calls .

What's a "normal video call"?

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

normal video calls = you just select video call and it happens = no fuss
anyway i dont know what it is called but you can find it in all symbians some androids i.e traditional cellular video calls where no voip sip is needed as its a service provided by the operators ;

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

So please elaborate. As I have no clue what you are talking about

"Normal" video calls introduced with UMTS?
Never used it here in DE as it was terribly expensive and I guess it has the end of life before it was used by masses?

So no idea if N900 supports that all.

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

on my old S60V5, it call 3G video call. and natively not supported on n900. replaced by skype or SIP.

so if you cannot using skype or SIP. you have no choices i think. "hope i'm wrong"

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

I don't know what the problem is with 3G video call. Can anybody clarify it?

I am currently trying to use GTalk. It was rumoured to have audio and video calls, so could be a good Skype alternative for those who do not like Microsoft's ownership of Skype.

For the future, I would think about XMPP-Jabber whatever. But these times, everybody has to have a GMail account - even if it is not actively used - so GTalk is easier to switch to.

Thank you. Best wishes.

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

Interesting, I was looking for something today and found nothing. Even for a normal VOIP call.

I tried to add google talk account but it keeps coming up wrong password. Same with qvdial which I think is similar that, doesn't allow connection. So if som1 finds something, post it here.

Thanks.

google replace gtalk with hangout and no maemo developer interest to create something compatible with it.

Okay, is it possible to port Linphone to Maemo, for SIP?
And Jitsi for XMPP-Jingle?
There is SFLphone - can anybody test it? How does it work?

Why does rtcom-accounts-plugin-facebook depend on rtcom-accounts-plugin-jabber?

Thank you. Best wishes.

i'm already using linphone service on default SIP application in n900. it work ( video call, voice call and chat ). it's just popularity issue compared to skype

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

Okay. Will try it. At least, with SIP, people can register with different providers, and it will be interoperable, like email - no lock-in.

Thank you. Best wishes.

I'm trying to get linphone working through the VOIP and Chat accounts in Settings.
After typing in username@sip.linphone.org + password + in advanced settings proxy : sip.linphone.org I can't get it to work with two acounts which work fine on a tablet and a laptop. Using it through OpenVPN also did not work. After I click on Sign In it starts loading and spinning and then it goes back to previous screen of Voip and Chat Accounts, without the yellow confirmation screen or green status appearing as in http://youtu.be/QKp0hZ9WL18?t=1m52s

I tried it on WiFi (I don't have any mobile credit right now) on three N900s which have CSSU Stable, CSSU Testing and Nokia's last official firmware.

What am I doing wrong?

Same. If I change username or password, I get yellow-notification that username-and-or-password-is-incorrect-or-something. Hence, the silent-failure-to-sign-in is not caused by wrong username or password.

Somebody who got linphone to work: care to share any tips?

Thank you. Best wishes.

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

You are doing nothing wrong.

KeepAlive parameters should be assumed to be handled automatically.
You do not need to change any parameter under advanced settings BUT:
KeepAlive Mechanism to Registered
and maybe KeepAliveInterval to any fixed value (needed that once but not anymore ).
Then linphone.org will work.

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

my previous issue when i using linphone was the same, and the problem was on keep alive mechanism. i choose REGISTER and everything working.

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

Hi peterleinchen and supergaban, thank you for your quick replies. :)

Audio calls are working now indeed after flipping the switch to REGISTER underneath the Keep Alive Mechanism.

Video calls don't work yet though. Whether started from tablet, laptop or n900, the video window opens for a second and then closes again.

Any suggestions?

Edit: changing the video codecs on linphone on laptop worked. The standard was VP8 which did not work on N900 apparently.
Now I need to find a way to use MP4 / h264 codecs on linphone's ipad app without jailbreaking...it says 'compile from source' if there is anyone who knows how to, or know of a good audio/video SIP client for iOS, then I can really start using it (I will be mostly contacting someone on an apple device)

In any case, very happy that SIP with audio is already working on my N900. But video...would make me ecstatic

peterleinchen 2015-03-09 08:44

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

If on Windows: install h264 plugin from videolan.org (link on linphone)

If on newer ubuntu (linux) try to compile ;)

question:
if anybody knows how to get msx264 compiled on ubuntu12 for linphone, please let me know! [get it compiled (version 1.3.3) but crashes, full linphone compile does also not work]

Wow thanks. A few months ago I tried linphone and I think I had the exact same issue. In the end I settled for sipgate.de, which also works nicely with the fritzbox (I'm almost becoming German :).

Video (also called multimedia call) on 3G aka UMTS networks only, using a circuit switched data connection, similar to ISDN User Part (ISUP).
Nokia did not support this on Nokia N900 or N9.
See.

I am very happy now, I think can make video calls now with any service available. All operators in my country has become 3G and some 4G. :D

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

Why did skype stop working with video? I dont often use it, but last time I did it worked with video/webcam.

I know you found a solution, great.

But:
Pidgin should work with video.

Re: exploring voice/video calls on 900 over internet.

Okay, I got two SIPs at this moment: one LinPhone (use for telephone numbers disabled), another PennyTel (use for telephone numbers enabled).

One complaint: when I go to Phone, and try to SIP-call a phone number, it offers me to choose between the two SIP accounts (even though only one of them has "use for telephone numbers" enabled). Address Book seems to have no such problem.

Second question: how do I do an SIP video call? Can I do an SIP video call to a mobile telephone number (yes, I enabled Video Calls for PennySIM, but I am not sure whether PennyTel can handle SIP-video-call)? /Okay, I will probably test it by trying an SIP video call from myself to myself - from PennyTel to LinPhone or from LinPhone to PennyTel - two options, yay!/

Thank you,
Best wishes.

Just an update to note for anyone arriving here,
this was the best advice:

Register
(I used two minute KeepAliveInterval)

nothing else special - using a sip.linphone.org account

cheers.
