Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
Hi,
Are any of you keeping your MeeGo Harmattan-powered Nokia N9 instead of getting a Jolla phone and why? I want to know because I'm curious to why some of you might have taken this choice :p |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I still use my n950. It has three killer features which should have my next phone and that is power saving mode, I simply don't want wifi scanning during day time, maps and drive, offline maps is a must because I travel often between netherlands and germany, sip calls from addressbook.
Don't know whether these are in sailfish os currently, only found requests and WIP reports. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I still use N9. Jolla has crappy HW, too big dimensions, and I don't like UI.
Hope to get 3d-party hw with Sailfish on top or jolla2 if it's gon be good. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I feel Jolla's hardware is a downgrade to N9/N950 (apart from CPU being better), overall build quality, screen, camera is worse than N9.
On OS side, I still prefer MeeGo Harmattan's looking and UI. Although Sailfish is being good but not as easy as MeeGo's Swipe. And I love the way Maemo/MeeGo intergrates sip and skype to the system. I love Jolla's being able to sideload apk though, |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
For me advantages N9 has over Jolla would: be OLED screen (with LPM), better camera (IMHO) and fully functional NFC. I can't comment on build quality of Jolla, but N9 is really good in that regard. As for size for me N9 is just about right, but I doubt that Jolla bigger size makes it less functional.
The main reasons I still haven't made the switch to Jolla would be that somehow N9 still is quite usable, and when N9 was introduced I felt like it's more advanced that the iPhone (or other phones) of the era - something one can't say about Jolla. Still Jolla is the way to go (their SW development is really unlike - which is a huge advantage in my book). I just wish they would either score big contract with some HW manufacturer to use their OS, or go all in and introduce new device themselves (Jolla 2 anyone?) Either way we would then be unable to complain about missing this/that feature in hardware.Till then - my N9 got new battery and is still going strong. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
and jolla hates some of us :(
|
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I'm keeping both. N9 is still my personal phone, and I got Jolla as my work phone.
Both have their good features. Many have already mentioned many of N9's advantages over Jolla, and I agree with most of them. I have Jolla because at least it has a possibility for future, and I like it a lot even though N9 is better in some aspects. So I want to support Jolla with my little contribution. Also pre-ordered the tablet and hope the best of success to them. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
As far as I can tell, N900 stil rules them all ;)
Next comes N950 followed closely by N9. Both of them have advantages/disadvantages. Then comes Jolla (never seen a SIM). It looks like it will definitely not make it the way to my primary (yet). There is so much missing and lots of flaws (getting better) compared to a 5 years older device. Both hardware wise as software wise. I expected way more but do understand where the team came from and the way they need to go... So in short Jolla could be the future but not yet for me. At the same time we need to see N9/x0 will die anytime sooner/later. :( |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
Not much point for me to get a Jolla, since their hardware does not support the 3G/4G bands in my country.
I would consider trying Sailfish ported to another device, if/when a port becomes polished enough (i.e., "when everything more or less works"). |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
N9 is sexiest phone ever that had touch the face of earth, simple as that.;)

Because there would never be a N9 tablet Jolla tablet (with Alien Dalvic) will be more interesting as the jphone, but not enough to preorder it. Hope I can wait with the tablet an do not have to buy Google or Microsoft tablet. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I am using both, N9 is main for daily use - calls, sms but Jolla for net browsing and keeping an eye on development, features, improvements, apps ...
I bought N9 as used phone and after some time I found out that skype integration was messing up with contacts, also wi-fi is still not stable, some minor problems. I believe there are better pieces out there. Also I like size of N9 and found out that it is easier to type on N9 then on Jolla, hmmm ? I am using uniboot, did flash so for future I think will stick with N9 untill possible. now I hope will get lynx and gt5 to get work, no success till now. still it is 60% for N9 and 40% for Jolla in way of use. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
First, N9 design is out of comparison. Much better. Only phone I think is looking as good as N9 is Xperia Z3 Compact.
Second, it should be forbidden to put such a bad camera like Jolla phone has. I am more and more thinking about Xperia Z3 Compact... unfortunatly. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
Still using N9. Jolla is just too large for everyday use.
|
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
Have both, but my daily phone is N9.
It has (for me) most intuitive way of handling, perfect size for my hands, can't live without Billboard app, heavy use of NFC (I have black and my GF cyan 16Gb version and we exchange stuff A LOT), have all essential apps for my needs, better integration of apps into system (for ie. Fahrplan can add journey to calendar, SIP integration, ...). Jolla has also some bright sides: faster battery charge, with Android integration I now use c:geo for geocaching and battery lasts forever, have data-only SIM and thanks to better tethering (way lower battery consumption and protocol, that any device can use) I cover (almost) everything. I also have N900 (with no broken USB [yay!], yet :), but functions only as mail reader and as music player, but I keep addressbook in sync just in case I need it as phone :D |
I'm in the US, and would only have 2G connectivity. 2G service is being phased out in some locations-like mine. And I'd need to import a Jolla through an intermediary. I guess that last one is a tie with my N9.

Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
For me, the N9 has two features that Jolla/sailfish lacks, which makes it impossible to use my Jolla and are my primary reasons for diving with my unicorn N9: owncloud caldav sync and sports tracker. The rest i can live with.
i prefer in N9: - size, hw design, screen - events feed (esp calendar + rss feed) - qneptunea as twitter client - notifications and im integration - search abilities the whole phone content Jolla is nice because: -much faster generally and web browsing specifically - has the people and community behind them today - has Android app support for many apps, and some are useful - would probably be more to like if it had the basic must-have features for me so that i could actually use it. Oh, and one more thing. N900 ftw!1 Keeping my other Sim in my still working n900. Emotionally, the n900 takes the price. - |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I'm keeping N9 because of:
- better HW-design (look) as Jolla - OLED screen - better UI - I can't stand the graphics and font-style in Jolla - it's really horrible comparing to beatiful UI of MeeGo Maybe SailfishOS 2 and Jolla Phone 2 will convince me... We'll see. Best regards, Jaracz |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I am keeping my N9 because
-OLED screen (with Bilboard notifications), Jolla screen is also otherwise crap. -Better camera -Native offline maps and navigation I decided to get Jolla Tablet to keep track on Sailfish progress, hopefully we get Sailfish on some decent hardware (meaning screen, camera) phones on the future. Either from Jolla or some other manufacturer. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
Yes, I keep using my N9.
Main reasons why (compared to Jolla): - Harmattan has more intuitive UI with less clutter. - N9 has better screen. (LCDs have poor contrast and power efficiency) - Better camera. Also I have a soft spot for anything Debian. I use debian on my desktop, laptop and server and having apt-get on my phone brings some consistency as I shuffle between them using SSH. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
The top picks why still use my N9 instead of jolla:
With that said I know that the N9 is a dead end so my next phone will probably be a jolla 2 or similar. Android is not an option for me. I just ordered a new battery for my N9 so I will probably keep it for a while. :) I did however decide to buy the jolla tablet since I wanted to support jolla. |

Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
It's July 2015 an the N9 ist still my main phone. Better display for summer ;-) and email, caldav and carddav are working perfectly. N9 is a real worker!
I tried last winter to switch to Jolla as main phone, good to read in the darkness. But I can not use it daily. The main reason caldav can not handle events with timezone information correctly. The events get +1hour in summer. Carddav does not work for me, got it working a little with syncevolution, but not stable. email cannot been configured to display text only. This feature requests and bugs are well documented over 1,5 years at together.jolla.com. As long as this is not fixed, I do not need the featureof a replacable battery (oops I think batteries are very short at stock). Sail on Jolla, nice Phone to play with, not more. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I have used my Jolla as my main phone for some time now (have had it since launch) but I always keep getting back to my N9 every now and then. And I feel that time is coming again :)
All the pros and cons have pretty much been said here already. Want only to say that for me, the Harmattan Swipe UI and all mods that community has made to it has made it the perfect and most efficient phone to use day-to-day basis for me. I am still in awe how simple, elegant and effective can phone usage be. And disgussed how phone manufacturers still can't get it that good again. Seriously, I love trying out different phones and OS's and do it way too often and spent too much on weird stuff, but since the first iPhone I feel that Meego Harmattan has been the only spark in the phone industry. All others are just mimics of iPhone or messy cut-and-past improvements of Android without clear goal to actually make one good product. Damn, i gotta switch my SIM to N9 during the weekend :D |

Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
same for me. The Jolla is for playing. The N9 is for daily use.
The Family has Iphones and Samsung Galaxys. Before the N9 every year got a new phone. Since the N9 i use now for three years and still no alternitive on the market |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
The fourth time I buy Nokia N9 broke all previous USB port and next time buy another Nokia n9 :) because it is my main phone all the others have not yet grown to become the successor to the N9 :)

Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
All said, but not often enough:
using N900 and N9 looking/browsing/mailing my Jolla from time to time, but still not convinced |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
The N9 is much more expensive than Jolla Phone. Besides the camera quality and power saving mode on the N9 it's also possible to boot multiply operating systems on the device. I used to multiboot Nitdroid for some android apps. I would buy a N9 instead of a Jolla or Nexus 5. The N900 has a short battery life, different type of touchscreen and only 256MB of RAM memory.

To those not keeping their Jolla... I have a N9 that I'm not using.
Let's make a deal? |

Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
I still like the Harmattan UI better than Sailfish's... and obviously Jolla's uselessness in the US is a problem.
But, for daily usage, Jolla is it: 1. No hacks required to run my own software 2. TOHKBD! 3. (I hate OLED) 4. Replaceable battery ... if only they actually sold it. |

But didn't someone find a 3rd-party battery* that'll work (reliably) & isn't pricey, for those who want a back-up battery? Personally I love OLED (the newest stuff -the old stuff sucked), but I digress. *obviously not supported by Jolla -shame they can't offer one that they do! |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?

Personally I hate OLED as well, from every aspect. My only downside compare with N950 to Jolla is the limit of storage. Though, it would be perfect for me if N950 had a sd slot or 64gb internal like N9. |
Re: Are some of you keeping your N9 instead of getting a Jolla?
Can someone do me a uname -a from Sailfish? Thanks in advance! :)

(However, what truly makes the N950 useless is the LCD problems) |
