Palm Foleo cancelled

I have it on good authority that the Palm Foleo will be cancelled! (or perhaps "not launched" is more accurate since they haven't sold any yet).

It wasnt a very good idea, to be honest... and I like Jeff Hawkins. I expected (when they announced a " breakthrough") something very exciting.... then I saw the Foleo and thought, youv'e got to be kidding me....I am glad the came to their senses before launch.

Quoting the official Palm blog, it sounds like it's not dead, just postponed to a future iteration:

"Jeff Hawkins and I still believe that the market category defined by Foleo has enormous potential. When we do Foleo II it will be based on our new platform, and we think it will deliver on the promise of this new category. We're not going to speculate now on timing for a next Foleo, we just know we need to get our core platform and smartphones done first."

Re: Palm Foleo cancelled

Thank god they realised that launching a Linux device in late 2007 based on the closed source Opera browser with Flash 7 which can't show youtube videos (because it doesn't have the horsepower or an up to date version of Flash) was a total non-starter... you could get away with that kind of thing in 2005 but not 2007!

Maybe Bono had a hand in "postponing" the Foleo... "What's this shoite yah feckin edjits?!" :)

How long have Palm been developing their own Linux platform? Must be getting on 5 years+ and still not produced anything of value... either their software sucks, or the hardware sucks, or both. I won't hold my breath waiting for Fooleo II - you can fool me once...

Software and hardware don't suck on their own. It's their management that sucked. Listening to (the overwhelming) negative critics and consumer responses and responding to them is a great first step in correcting their direction though.

doesn't palm own Be? Had they just released the hardware with the last version of BeOS, with bluetooth, PIM, and a mozilla based browser, they would have been set! oh well...

&*%$#@!
I would have ordered one. If they'd included the option to download email directly over wifi – without smartphone – I would have ordered three.

If anybody knows another device that lets you edit docs comfortably, doesn't get hot on your lap, has wifi, decent battery-life and instant-on, I'm interested.

I wonder what Palm will do with the Foleo hardware already made. Dump in the desert? Or sell them for $100 on Woot?

Re: Palm Foleo cancelled

something tells me the same hardware will be back, but with the unified software stack.

as for flash videos, people here on this forum should know why flash is a pain in the *** to play. using uktube and mplayer it plays fine even on a 770, but in the browser? forget it.

so its not like the hardware cant handle it, its that the way flash work, as a plugin within the browser, makes it unable to access the hardware effectively. but then flash have always been a ineffective design. i have seen it crawl on high powered desktop computers! the day we can all dump flash for something thats native to all browsers, is the day im doing a naked happy dance!

all in all i think they are aiming for developer mindshare here. given that they recently started talking about a linux based os developed in house with legacy app support/emulation, it would be strange to use a third party os on the foleo, like they where planing.

so im guessing that the foleo isnt as much canceled as on ice.

And only a week or two ago I received an email from Palm Developers about the exciting new development possibilities with the Foleo.. oh well. After the initial frawn I actually started to like the concept, I think it made sense. It'll be interesting to see what (if anything) comes out in the future.

The market is constantly moving. If they try to reuse the exact same hardware next year, it will not be competitive. But of course, they have more important issues to sort out, like the UI and OS.

yep, they may scale up the cpu and ram, but i dont think they will go for say X86 or anything like that.

palm knows ARM, same as nokia (as i suspect thats why the 770 and N800 went ARM, simpler access to parts).

and if they can get apps to run on multiple devices without a recompile thats good for both user and corp. hell, one may use the foleo as a kind of dev platform for treo apps...
