Ipod Touch

As a proud owner of the Nokia N800, I love it, but I just saw the new announced Ipod touch , and Im very very enticed by it. For just about everything the Nokia can do, I can do on the iPod touch , I believe. I imagine because its built on a version of of OSX in the future more and more applications will be able to run native on it. Not sure if it has ebook reader but I imagine it will. Just wondering what other people think, and if this could be a good replacement.

Re: Ipod Touch

The closed-source approach and reliability of the iPod Touch will make it hugely popular, providing many of the functions of the N800 in Apple's pure design context, including music and video playback and wifi web-browsing, plus the new iTunes Wi-Fi store. It apparently does not have Bluetooth, so an external keyboard is a no-go and file transfers will be more limited, presumably. I believe there will be no speakers or microphone or camera on the iPod Touch, so clearly no VOIP phone function or video chat. EBook reading? Unknown, as you said. There's definitely enough room for the N800 and its next-generation successors to carry the open-source cause forward in the mobile tablet space, in my opinion. But there's no doubt this announcement must have had a seismic effect on the N-Series team at Nokia.

Re: Ipod Touch

I agree the no bluetooth sort of kills the deal for me. I can easily hook up my N800 to my phone, and have mobile internet access anywhere. But the Nokia with SD cards just doesn't cut it for me anymore. I need tweezers to pull out the cards. Although I haven't tried SDHC cards yet, and they are still expensive for larger capacity.

Re: Ipod Touch

Nokia have the infrastructure (music store) to compete with the iPod but do they have the design, UI and software skills? The iPod/iPhone Look & Feel and usability blows the Tablets out of the water - Nokia need to step up their game here in order to compete.

The iPod Touch is thinner, lighter, cheaper ($399 for 16GB model), better looking (and probably easier to use) and with better battery life (22 hours audio/5 hours video) than the N800 - the only thing it lacks in comparison to the Nokia Tablets is an open development model (the other features - camera, voip, bluetooth are probably intentional to differentiate it from the iPhone).

SDHC cards are getting cheap. I just bought two Patriot 8GB cards for 74.99 each. Not bad at all, and there you have your 16GB that the new touch has.

Milhouse 2007-09-05 18:45

Re: Ipod Touch

But it's just cost you $150 more to add 16GB of memory. Nobody would dispute that memory cards can be bought for the N800, but it's an additional expense which isn't necessary with the iPod Touch. If your primary interests are media playing with occasional web browsing the iPod Touch is by far the better option as media is easier to manage (sync with itunes), use (designed for dummies), has a superior UI and is significantly cheaper than the N800.

I love my N800... but Nokia need to get serious with this product category, or get out entirely. I sense that Apple are at least 2 steps ahead of Nokia every time.

Re: Ipod Touch

Ouch. This thing is sweet. If I didn't buy my iPhone already (ouch $399 now) I would have dumped my N800 to buy the 16gb version.

very interesting!

buit for me, I think I'll stick with my n800 and maybe look into replacing my aging ipod with the 160GB version pretty soon!!

then maybe in a year or so wait til there's an iphonepod 200GB and a N1000 and make another decision :)

Re: Ipod Touch

I wonder when Nokia will cut the price on the N800.
Apple has put them in a position were the N800 will collect dust on the selves if Nokia does not move fast!

Now we will see if Nokia is going to "put up or shut up" when it comes to the internet tablet . Whatever happens we as users/customers will be winners....let the games begin.
.

Re: Ipod Touch

i'd get a touch to replace my 20GB ipod but I'm not convinced it is a N8007killer. I still think the iPhone comes closest to a N800 killer, especially given the almost daily hacks coming to it.

Re: Ipod Touch

It seems that the Touch is wrapped up based on iPod line, not iPhone. It's essentially a music/video player rather than pda-like communication device like iPhone.

- no BT
- no Mail
- no MAPS (well, you'll get them from web though)
- no memos

I'll stick with my N800...

Re: Ipod Touch

Hmm.. both n800 and ipod touch has their pros and cons..

ipod touch seems to be great for music & video playback, and also as your digital photo album. N800 for so much more (web, email, skype, etc).

I will buy an ipod touch and 'share' it with the wife :)

Re: Ipod Touch

NNo a2dp. That itself is a deal breaker.
No webcam or voip.
Lesser resolution.
I don't understand what is the big deal about the ui.??
Once u use any ui for 2 days its easy. After that it is alll about functions.
The n900 is going to pawn all other competitors. But the best thing about this apple
release is that...it will make nokia to price the n900 very competitively.

no voip, no deal. period.

really nice idea. kudos to apple though.

Re: Ipod Touch

I think the iPod Touch will appeal to "regular" people, but I like the N800 for my purposes. While on vacation this weekend, I used it to browse the web, read email, listen to music through the speakers, make Skype-phone calls, watch a movie while on the ferry, played Battle jeweled and solitare for a bit, chatted with my friends on Yahoo with gaim, and used secure shell to log into my servers. None of these features are hacks that risk being hunted down and killed by the manufacturer.

Re: Ipod Touch

Once again, Apple misses the Bluetooth A2DP cluetrain that ran right over them.

I'm sticking with the N800 for its bigger screen, open platform, and kick-***** connectivity. I've not found a device YET that can beat the N800's built-in wi-fi antenna for picking up wi-fi networks. Nokia cranked that one little detail all the way up to 11 and ripped the knob off.
But I'll be keeping an eye on the iPod Touch for any "hacks" that open it up to running VoIP, Claws Mail (or better email app), or more importantly Ur-Quan Masters, ScummVM, FreeCiv, etc.
Besides, 16GB SDHC Class 6 cards have been announced and will hit the market soon. An N800 with 32GB of total storage stomps the Touch flat.
You can only get so far within the walled-garden of the UI on the Touch/iPhone before you start banging your head against the wall and screaming at Apple.

But for n00bs and Joe User I guess the Touch is fine.

A2DP isn't taking off, the sound quality is so horrific. Something is wrong when 5 buck headsets sound better.

As far as the walled garden, you're right. But everything in the garden blows the pants off the IT. Always a trade off :)

Re: Ipod Touch

I think it's funny everyone complaining about no webcam. Has anyone actually used their camera?? Yea, there's a picture there, but I've seen monkeys at the zoo paint better pictures with their own crap! Sucks not giving it bluetooth though. Wonder if they'll let us sync over wifi?

Re: Ipod Touch

The thing that turns me off about Apple products is their reliance on iTunes to transfer music. I've always hated it and try not to use it. For my 1st gen nano, I ended up using Winamp and the ml_ipod plugin for drag and drop goodness and it was great. I recently put Rockbox on the nano and it's breathed new life into (after not using it for lord knows how long). I still hate the battery life on mine but I don't see myself upgrading to a newer one although the Ipod Classic looks great but again, iTunes can eat my balls.

my n800 is an irreplaceable asset to my life. i honestly can't see myself without this godsend of mobile technology. I honestl look forward to paying for its successor. the n900 will be the true revolutionary device, and i will be the at the peak of my anti-apple fanboyism, sporting a matching shirt that will undoubtedly match my n900 because nokia is the **** diggity, so they will offer the n900 in so many colors that even elton john would be surprised. Go Team Nokia!

While A2DP sound quality isn't audophile, it's perfectly acceptable for whenever I'm on the train etc. (I currently use my SonyEricsson W950i walkman phone and SE BT headphones) - the convenience of not having wires makes up for the reduction in sound quality, which is still perfectly adequate.

Even A2DP on the N800 is quite good, though not perfect, but should improve if/when Nokia implement an official firmware solution (it looks like it's more when than if nowadays) :)

If I want audiophile sound I'll listen to music in my lounge on my audiophile sound system... but at all other times A2DP is the next best option, for example when I'm listening at night in bed and I don't want to get tangled up in the wires (after I've nodded off) and have my phone drop on the floor! :)

Re: Ipod Touch

Being a regular Mac user, I must admit I was a bit torn at first. The main attraction for me, of course, is the ease with which it will integrate into the Apple ecosystem and play nice with my Macbook. It's certainly a very pretty toy and like all mammals I'm easily distracted by shiny objects. But then I think of all the extra functionality I would be sacrificing by dumping the N800 and I pretty much come back to my senses. I've made my peace with the N800 and found ways to get the things I need to sync to actually do so, so I'm not really missing out in that department although it took a bit of extra leg work to make it happen. Eventually I know I would end up as iBall said "banging my head against the wall" once I had reached the iPod's limits. I'm much too adventurous to not get bored quickly with a closed device such as this (which is why I also have Linux boxes around to satiate my experimental side) and I believe I would regret abandoning the N800 in the end. The lack of voip, fixed amount of storage, lack of bt, and not even so much as a notepad type app for text editing are all deal breakers for me. Not to mention lack of speakers as well. I use my IT as a bedside/desktop radio quite often. So I guess I'll be staying put for the time being.

Did you ever use A2dp??? Well i am sure you never....if you would have you would never put such stupid comments. A2dp rocks. Use one and i ll bet my last penny that you will never go back to wires. That includes the A2dp on the n800

No web via bluetooth, that kills it as a Nokia replacement for me.

Same for Archos 605, though I bought it anyway.

Gizmo, Skype, real SIP-based VoIP, updated Opera browser, new microb Mozilla-based browser (Google apps for the most part work now), Flash 9 browser plug-in (think "Real YouTube"), new Video Center (still needs work) for video streaming/podcasts, Star Control II - Ur-Quan Masters, ScummVM, Mauku (Jaiku client), Exult, Canoe file browser, UKTUBE (download and watch YouTube videos), UK Media Player (flick-scrolling like an iPod Touch), Claws Mail 3.0 (damn good email app!), Aisleriot solitaire game, Battle for Wesnoth strategy game, etc. just to name a few.
