OS2007 Hacker edition 4.2007.36 available

As Quim announced here
http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...3975#post73975
the new hacker adition is available

http://maemo.org/news/announcements/...189171468.html
http://www.notacloud.com/blog/?p=38

Let's use this thread for experiences with this release.

BTW, If you don't want to loose custom kernel or initfs with bootmenu and can use linux flasher, it may be good idea to extract just rootfs.jffs2 and flash it alone
Code:

flasher-3.0 -u -F SU-18_2007HACKER_4.2007.36-2_PR_F5_MR0_ARM.bin
flasher-3.0 -r rootfs.jffs2 -f

Re: OS200 Hacker edition 4.2007.36 available

I guess I'll be first. The installation went great. Recovery went ok, although I didn't have a really recent backup and had to reload some stuff. But everything I downloaded and installed worked. Some didn't on the previous version.

However, backup/restore causes the 770 to reboot. It gets part way into 'Documents' and aborts. Backup/restore now works. Don't know what the difference is.

I was using Opera last night and it kept causing the 770 to reboot. Minimo worked ok, though.

Thanks,

Bob

Note: All I need is a No, or if Yes, a pointer to where these real hackers might be. Followups questioning my moral compass or heritage should be directed elsewhere....I suggest /dev/null but will discuss intellectual property issues on General.

Re: OS2007 Hacker edition 4.2007.36 available

While the loss of the new Flash browser plugin is regrettable, the loss of Skype isn't as much since there IS a new beta of SIP/VoIP integration available.
That is, if it's compatible with this new HE version.

Re: OS2007 Hacker edition 4.2007.36 available

Anyone wishing to try Flash 9 on the latest IT OS 2007HE can download Flash 9 from here.

To install:

Close the browser then...

Code:

sudo gainroot
wget http://nmacleod.com/nokia/n800/microb_flash-4.2007.tar.gz
tar xvzf microb_flash-4.2007.tar.gz -C /

To uninstall (and revert to Flash 7):

Close the browser then...

Code:

sudo gainroot
rm /usr/lib/browser/plugins/libflashplayer.so

Flash 9 kind of works in youtube - the plugin is correctly detected (previously with Flash 7, youtube.com would show an error message stating that Javascript is disabled or an old version of Flash is installed) however the video is garbled (at least it is on my 770). Flash advertisments on other sites seem to work fine.

It's slated for maemo 4.0 (Chinook) which is also announced as a HE for the 770, so it's not impossible...

Step by step to take a look of the new 2007He.36. Warning, you are going to lose every installed sw and ALL your data on the 770. This is NOT the recommend way to updating, this is just to take a look see whether you like the new 2007He:

DL the 2007He.36.
1) make a backup of your system (mine is 2007He2006.47.17)
2) install Nokia ITT SW update wizard
3) flash the new He2007.36-2
4) restore your backup if you have He2006.47.17; answer NO when ask about reinstall your older library from your MMC
5) boot up; it restore ALL your websitesand your WEP routers. You do have to re-install all your favorite SW though.

Initial impression; GUI remains the same as the older He edition. This He edition correctly identify the device as 770 He edition instead of calling the device as N800. In several websites, it is eye blinking fast, for example, the tableer is loading faster than you can see the web page!

enjoy.

Right now I have OS2006 installed. I do not want to disturb my OS2006 and I want to clean install this latest version of OS2007 in to my mmc (right now my mmc do not have any OS) and I want to dual boot between my OS2006 and OS2007.

I guess i didnt use good keyword to search. can some one point me to where it can help me doing this. I need a step by step instructions because I am newbie to Linux and N700.

Thanks in advance

I'd like to add an addendum to the previous question..I'm one of the Nokia 770 noobs. I managed to dual boot so that 2006 is on the mmc card. But I know just enough to be dangerous with this thing. I was hoping someone could point me to instructions on how to install the new 2007he onto the mmc card. I'm assuming the flasher doesn't take into effect the multiple partitions. I just don't want to go pressing buttons and destroy the device.

Can't be done... your best bet would be to copy your OS 2006 install to MMC, then install OS 2007HE to internal flash. There's no way to install a new firmware direct to MMC without going via internal flash.

fpp 2007-09-07 19:02

Re: OS2007 Hacker edition 4.2007.36 available

I have yet another possible scenario on my wish list :-)

Right now I have the latest OS2006 with double boot from internal flash (mostly unused) and 512 MB MMC (stock Nokia kernel).

I also have a 2GB MMC waiting for just this new 2007HE to appear...

So what I'd like to do is :

- keep my double-boot (Fanoush already reminded us how to do that),

- flash 2007HE to internal flash for a start,

- flash a new kernel to support 2GB MMC and faster speeds,

- transfer my FAT and ext2 partitions to the 2GB MMC so I can still double-boot between 2006 and 2007HE...

Is this doable by a normal human ? :-)

Milhouse 2007-09-07 19:07

Re: OS2007 Hacker edition 4.2007.36 available

fpp - isn't the OS 2006 kernel also used in OS 2007HE? So you only need to flash the rootfs from OS 2007HE to your device (see Fanoush's earlier post) and keep the kernel with high speed support.

Try tar'ing your OS 2006 partition that you have on your 512MB MMC (with compression) and see if you can copy the archive off to your new card where you can restore it. As for FAT, just copy it via a PC.

nope it possible but kind of complicated.

in short:

- you have to extract the rootfs from the fiasco image
- copy the jffs2 img to a virtual ram mtdblock
- make a tar
- extract tar to mmc

nokia 770 only used as a mmc card reader for the computer.

anyway I don't recommend that for newbie.

I'm a tad out of touch and confused about these kernel issues, never having used the alternatives.

Ever since OS2005 I have just used the stock kernel that came with the latest Nokia image.

But to use my new 2GB MMC or get the faster speed (or maybe both ?), don't I have to also flash a modified kernel like Fanoush's this time ?...

2GB has been supported by OS 2006 for the last two releases... to get the high-speed MMC support you need to flash your device with one of Fanoush's kernels. My understanding is that Fanoush's high-speed OS 2006 (3.2006.49-2) kernel should work with this release of OS 2007HE.

Thanks for the correction - what would be nice is a simple set of commands to extract the rootfs which hopefully newbies can follow. I'm assuming it would require mounting the jffs2 filesystem through a loppback or something similar.

I am at this moment trying to figure out a live CD or 'pendrive' linux solution so that I can run the linux flasher app. It would be nice if there was a way to make a FIASCO image which the windows-based flashing utility could use.

I've done the flash process and re-flash initfs and fast kernel twice now. Pain in the butt.

Thanks for the clarification Mil - I really had the two issues mixed up.

So ideally I can just set up the complicated stuff without worrying about the kernel, then flash that afterwards just for the speed gain...

Yes, someone recently provided guide for initfs which is similar, for rootfs you just need bigger mtdram, see
http://labs.vivi.eng.br/blog/?p=29

Also if you mount the MMC card directly in desktop linux you can skip the tar make/extract step and copy it on the fly from mounted rootfs directly to card (cloning via two tar's in a pipe could do this effectively too)

Also when we are talking about complex things not recommended for newbies the second (slightly insane) option is to do it directly on the device. You only need space on mmc card and already bootable system on mmc and one spare mmc partition for the result, steps are (in one go, no rebooting between)

- boot from mmc
- download firmware .bin to mmc card
- use http://nopcode.org/0xFFFF/?p=down to extract rootfs
- mount internal flash and make flashable backup via mkfs.jffs2
- unmount internal flash
- flash new HE rootfs via flash_eraseall + nandwrite (or 0xFFFF)
- mount internal flash (with new HE) , clone to spare mmc partition or make a tar backup
- unmount internal flash
- flash old backup via flash_eraseall + nandwrite (or 0xFFFF)

This uses internal flash as a temporary space. flash_eraseall + nandwrite + flashing script example (initfs_flash) is inside bootmenu initfs flasher.

This is only useful if you don't have anything but the N770. Using PC is much easier.

Re: OS2007 Hacker edition 4.2007.36 available

So what would the steps and commands be if one were booting off the internal MMC and slapped in a fresh 2/4/8GB SDHC card in the external slot with the intent to setup the external card for booting into a new image/WM when placed in the internal slot?

Look like initfs is not the same as OS 2006. From what I saw and from maemo wiki (http://maemo.org/community/wiki/os20...b17f7042bef87e) the new initfs is based on RX-34 initfs (n800). So watchout for those how only change the rootfs.

Thanks

First impression
===========
Extremely impressed with this recently released 2007He2007.36-2 version for the 770. The file manager is completely compatible with 2006OS. The prev 2007He (2006.47) version file manager can only read the name of the file, but not execute the file, e.g. you cant even delete the file if file was created under 2006OS and browse under 2007He (3rd party SW is case by case, spreadsheet yes to read but not ren or del, MM route/track cant even read. maps are the same though). For people that flip back and forth with 2007He2006.47 (old one), and 2006OS, like myself (I use 2006OS ONLY for video media, I use 2007He for everything else), I have to keep a copy for each OS, it is headache on management and it wasted tons of space. Now it is over, the new 2007He2007.36-2 does not have this problem. I immediately del dup copies and reclaim space. Space is v precious for a 1G MMC. And yes, 2006OS is able to execute/ren/del files created under 2007He2007.

The new 2007He employed 'similar' GUI as the old one. Some people expressed disappointment. I really dont care, GUI is just a skin, I can put on any skin I want. On a user level point of view (I know, not a double blind scientific comparision with p<.05 bla bla bla), opera browser is more stable, app installation is more smooth (I did not really check, I restore from my own backup, and re-install all the SW, did not encounter even one dependency problem, I am not quite sure, whether the restore or the new version takes care of the dependency problem.)

I use spreadsheet/calender for business, webserving for break/entertainment, video/music for leisure, the first 2 category have improved. Video remains to be try out, 2 out 3 aint bad.

Yes? I heard you, somebody is goin to ask that question "should I upgrade or should I stay with 2006OS?" If you use a lot video media, and HATE to switch, (this is a blatan lie, it is a re-boot, not a switch), between 2007He and 2006OS, I would stay with 2006OS. Other than that, I see absolutely NO reason not to upgrade. "the upgrade is painful", nay, if you always save a copy of the sw before installation, the re-installation is a piece of cake. As a matter of fact, I always format Harddrive and re-install SW every now and then, it is "healthier" and the system runs MUCH smoother in general, any OS or any PC.

when microb for 770 was announced it was mentioned that may be one should install hacker edition. I messed up my previous 2007HE with microb trials and do not want to do that again with the latest update, so my question is whether microb works with latest hacker edition

The first thing I installed after gaining root of the newly flashed 2007he is microb. No, the microb for 770 refuses to install, and the microb for N800 installs successfully but it screws up the browser (application error). Anybody has any success?
