Nokia to launch Virtual Reality device running Linux-based OS on July 28. VR apps for iOS, Windows & Android also coming

VR-1 No, it is not professional camera or imaging tech alone that we will see being introduced on July 28 during Nokia’s event. If a tip from one of our trusted sources has to be believed we will see unveil of “Virtual Reality” device that Nokia has been working on and we have exclusively reported about it in past. That’s why we had included VR devices as one of the probable announcements while reporting about the July 28 event. If the tip has to be believed, Nokia may also announce companion VR apps on iOS, Android and Windows.

More info about the Nokia Virtual Reality device project,

The VR project is product of “Presence Capture program” in Nokia Technologies. Nokia has been working on developing 3D video and audio solutions to transmit 3D presence in Virtual Reality. The device will be based on Nokia’s homegrown Linux-Based cloud OS and will employ cross-platform app development platform Qt for companion applications on iOS, Android and Windows. Yes VR apps based on Qt. Nokia is back to roots.

We have earlier posted about many Nokia patents related to wearable glass and eye movement based interactions. A job posting had already revealed that Nokia was indeed working on a cloud-powered OS based on Linux.

"If the tip has to be believed, Nokia may also announce companion VR apps on iOS, Android and Windows."

I found this website intriguing - there is actually NO SOLID REFERENCE AT ALL in most of their articles.

I'm not surprised if Nokia poweruser "announce" Nokia may Launching Maemo, MeeGo, Sailfish, Acquire Jolla, Making QWERTY device, revive N9 design... Etc in foreseeable future.

Honestly, Mr. Foxkia, I've gotta ask: why should anyone on the Maemo forum board care in the least about a potential tip about a possible upcoming product completely unrelated to Maemo, from a company that has irrevocably cut all ties to Maemo?

I understand someone having nostalgia about the people who brought us the N900 and the N9, but the vast majority of those people no longer work at Nokia. (And, given the recent layoffs, they no longer work at Microsoft either.) I really don't see any reason to bother keeping track of every little thing the company currently called "Nokia" does...

They might make something like this, but they'd be behind HTC, Samsung and of course Facebook and Microsoft in this endeavor.

Can't say this is a shrewd move.

Er, but did either of these two guys have anything to do with Maemo or Meego?

(BTW, it looks like Hans Peter Brondmo left Nokia back in February, from his LinkedIn page.)

Wait... I'm confused. The N9 was an MeeGo device was it not?

My understanding is that Alex is a hardware design guy, not a software guy. At least, that's what it looks like from his LinkedIn page...

Ah, gotcha. So he was the industrial designer behind the N9 but had nothing to do with the OS.

Regardless; I think this thread reads like a wish list of unsubstantiated rumors. I doubt proof will come forward.

But it's different emphasis, at least cnet article didn't say like releasing app or whatsoever for windows phone. This thread's title even looks sure that they will release app for windows ect. I agree with previous that we really don't care what Nokia will release, but how Foxkia and Nokiapoweruser can link that with releasing windows app makes me laugh.

Basically whatever Nokia do will be a big deal to these guys:

Nokia hiring a SW engineer on Linkedin = Nokia back to MeeGo?
Nokia said they have whatever design patent = N9 design revive?
Nokia hiring camera related job = Nokia releasing 41MP?
Nokia releasing whatever = iJunk, Android and windows app coming?

I think I'm becoming r3tarded just read through Foxkia's posts.

wtf was that?
I thought I was watching a commercial for shadowy displayed washing machines...
I've mucked with all kinds of VR equipment and i dunno...
I see alotta hype
I would like to see more concrete results than a poorly illuminated video and a write up.
I want some hard real work done with this equipment showing it's capabilities...not a fluff piece webpage ...before I throw my own money at it

So far it is less OZO
and more ONO ....

Yes but...
...do you remember Jolla's "something big is coming" campaign and the flood of speculations that followed*)?

*) Instead of just waiting for 4 days... people are clearly very irrational animals.

Just goes to show that Jolla and Nokia share the same roots ;)

hehe...yeah good point.
[sigh]
Hype works.. but it is for snake-oil salesmen pandering to the jaded and /or foolish youth.
There is a lot of good VR equipment I've used over the years and the proof of their abilities were not in how well they "spun" their commercials for it...but for how well the equipment actually worked.

we are much closer now...

It means the intent is to use small low-yield nukes in conflicts.

Thank god. I was really fearing they would launch one more VR headset in a market that is already overcrowded.
Better to be on that side of the market in the VR craze at the moment.

I don't know where exactly the 5 figure price point was picked by some blogs. That said Nokia made it clear it's not really for consumers, but rather professional use. So porn industry? ;)

Jaunt Studios was announced as one of the first to use the camera.

Quote:

Nokia says Ozo is the most advanced VR filmmaking platform yet. It certainly looks amazing — a spherical rig the size of a large cantaloupe, roughly 6 pounds, with eight optical image sensors spaced roughly an eye width apart. Audio is captured in three dimensions by eight microphones embedded in the camera, and the result is audio that helps to locate you in space. If you hear a dog barking behind you in Ozo-produced VR, look behind you — you'll see the dog.

A five figure price point.
Well I love Nokia and all..
hell they made the devices I love...
I'm sure they'll have many many many years of unswerving dedicated support available for this spherical washing machine.

Re: Nokia to launch Virtual Reality device running Linux-based OS on July 28. VR apps for iOS, Windows & Android also coming

I do believe now...
considering the umbilical has been cut for some time now...
I think...ANY posting Nokia-related device-wise, os-wise, hardware-wise, software-wise, release-wise, news-wise ...ANY "-wise" in fact...
really shouldn't be anywhere else but in the "Competitors" sub-forum having absolutely no ties with Maemo in any shape or form any longer.
Really ...Nokia is just another competitor like M$ or Apple or Droid or etc..

Hell ...Meizu's Meego has more in common with our direction than Nokia does.
I do think "off topic" or "General" [or anywhere else other than "Competitors"] isn't the place for discussion on "What new hardware or software or... whatever... Nokia is doing now..."
Sorry Foxkia ...but ..our past may be Nokian-based...but for some time now ...our present has had a big Zero in any kind of compatibility, cross-over interests, ...any thing in common...with Nokia...and it is extremely doubtful we ever will again.
So if you could kindly post new Nokia tech and software developments in Competitors ...you will not only get actual "thanks" feedback...and input...but as well your posts in "Competitors" will not get buried as quickly as in "General" or "Off Topic" or similar sub-forums.
