What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

In honor of the upcoming release of the Sailfish tablet (and the announced Intex phone), I'd like to start up a new list of desired (native!) apps for the Sailfish OS, along the lines of onethreealpha's original thread. I will play the role of evil Mr. Morden (obscure Sci-Fi reference) and ask each and every one of you, "What do you want?". ;) Please post a note in this thread about the apps you would like to see, and I'll gather them together into this first post. Thanks!

Multimedia Apps (Various Types):
Music Apps:
Photo / Video Apps:
Location / Navigation Apps:
Educational Apps:
Content Creation Apps:
Development Apps:
Messaging Apps:
Network / Communications / Web / File & Data Sharing Apps:
Business Apps:
Utility Apps:
Games:
Android Compatibility:
Other:
Note: if you would like to see some of these apps developed more quickly, TMO member marmistrz has opened a thread where he is taking donations for work on apps.

Thanks for creating this thread (even though a wiki might be better as a wiki page).

Here's my contribution:
  • Kodi
  • R
  • Good flashcard application (Anki port?)
  • Offline vector maps/navigation (need to replace Osmand)
  • File/video download manager with support for various websites (could integrate youtube-dl)

Other than that, I have everything I need (and even these as Android apps, but native would be much better). Plus landscape support to existing apps would be highly appreciated.

PS: I may update the list later.

Ah, well, I kind of like the more informal approach of a thread. :) I think it's also useful for each contributor to give a more detailed explanation of what they'd like to see. But a wiki would work too...

For "R", do you mean the R statistical computing language?

I think he does, and I second that, especially now that we have a keyboard. As we're in the "work" applications, a simple text editor with Cancel feature + support for Asciidoctor would be handy too.

What about the apps that were listed in the other thread? Are we restarting from scratch? It would be good to update the previous list by removing the apps that were developped since then, but to keep the others.

Ah, well, I'm a Sailfish newbie myself (I won't even have a device until I get the tablet), so I'm not in a good position right now to determine the state of the apps in the original list. (Although, I guess that goes for this list as well... I'll try to do what I can to determine the existence of apps as I add them.) Also, I'd kind of like to encourage new folks to post their interests here, without being intimidated by an existing list of hundreds of apps. :)

Re: What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

I add my Catorise-like and Orrery wishes that I just posted in the other thread a few days ago then. :o R was on my list too. And basically space-related apps, including Stellarium but I think this one has a Sailfish package already, just not in any repo at the moment if I'm correct. Airtame is an important one too.

Re: What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

I already posted a few ones in the recently released spreadsheet by one of the devs on here. But here we go again:

-OneDrive app (at least uploading, downloading and viewing of photos)
-Groove Music (formerly: XBox Music) app (at least searching, playing and adding to collection)
-Instagram upload app

Kakuro!

This is my favourite Android implementation: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ot.kakuro.full , and there's an ad-supported version by the same dev I could probably use.

But I'd love a native one. May even try to write one myself, unfortunately I'm a shockingly bad programmer, so it'd take a while and probably not work. :(

Well, that one is specific to marmistrz alone. :) This one is an open request to any developer. (Although I admit I want to get some ideas for apps to work on myself...)

Re: What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

Here's a few ideas (though I don't think I'm a deserving recipient):
  • pass password store front end - like the Android app Password Store (see f-dorid) would also require gpg keychain app.
  • BBC iPlayer/website video streamer (inc. live radio). Could be based round ports of youtube-dl and/or get_iplayer (was planning to try compiling them when I get the tablet, myself). mpv can hook into youtube-dl, but not get_iplayer.
  • Back-up/Restore wrapper round rsync to do on the fly backups to ssh/sd/etc.
  • Front end to add some missing functionality from Contacts and Calendar - eg allow easy playing with their databases. For example I borrowed the sqlite commands to add a custom calender from together, but it's slow if you don't know what you're doing.
  • App that displays UKMO weather forecasts, and possibly weather radar (this may mean cost)

If I had those, I'd probably remove android support from my phone.
:)

Re: What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

I am still missing a decent youtube client as yplayer seems outdated and crashes on long videos, like both browsers do.

- CuteTube2 would be awesome, using it on n900

- A decent Camera app with timelapse function would be nice to have. "BlessN900" or "CameraPro" (harald meyer/symbian) alike.
Jolla phone is soon to get outdated and timelapse photography is always a cool usecase for "drawer phones".

And i second "stellarium" and "catorise", would be awesome!

Well, Stellarium is already there, even if not in a well known repository: https://github.com/skorjevec/stel-sf/releases/tag/0.9.1

Hmm, I should ask -- what features should a dash-cam app have that a normal camera app lacks?

I guess it records on a loop, like a CCTV machine.

And maybe is voice activated, emailing the video to your insurance company when you shout "HOLY ****!" :)

I have no problems at all with YTPlayer. Not sure why someone else here has?
And as for camera apps: we have one: Cameraplus. But timelapse would be cool, agreed.

Oh, something that's also needed: a new Foursquare app as Foursail is currently broken (doesn't find/refresh nearby venues anymore).

Re: What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

As indicated in marmistrz's thread, I'd like to see the following apps:

- Piratebox, offline file sharing and comm. system.
- Wifi password recovery list, to show in plain text the passwords of stored wifi networks.
- rpm generator, to generate the rpm file of an installed app.
- Conky, system monitor (or is it for X window system only?)

A RSS reader that load full content of news. Have not seen one in Jolla store and openrepos

Re: What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

I'd really love an XMPP app that supports both Jingle and legacy file transers, stream resumption, message carbons, Multi User Chat (MUC), and Message Archive Management (MAM).

Not sure how easy that would be with Telepathy, because the Telepathy XMPP client that ships with Plasma 4/5 is pretty s#!t in my experience. I don't know if that's the fault of Telepathy for not supporting certain XEPs or the app for not implementing them.

A good model for the "perfect app" is Conversations on Android.

By "load full content of news", do you mean load the entire list of news entries, load the full content of a specific entry (or selection of entries), or load all content of all news entries? (That last one would probably overload most storage systems; for example, my favorite podcast site, Ultima Thule, has an RSS feed that reaches well into the gigabytes of data...)

Loading of full article. Not to open full article in html page
Nextgen reader for windowsphone is a good example

-Integrated app access rights control center program for both Alien Dalvik as Sailfish.
-Integrated SIP
-Integrated full XMPP

I am not demanding.

3rd party:

-Native Firefox.

-let's not forget the best of all:

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...t=find+sex+app

Should have a cross platform client "show availability only" for Android / iOS / WP.
I think this app if done right would have a great side effect in pulling people to Sailfish.

Re: What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

I'll add my few because I didn't see many creative apps listed:

Creative:
Drawing app like: Bamboo Paper or Krita or Mischief or Corel Painter Mobile
Note taking app like: Simplenote or Evernote or Penultimate
Wire Flow prototyping
Media:
VLC w/ streaming to devices enabled (Chromecast, Miracast, PiCast)
Flow for Reddit
A much better Twitter client - think Falcon Pro
Feedly w/ gestures & native
A decent CBR reader (don't care, just a good one without a shitty interface w/ huge arrows or some other amateurish UX)
Native Netflix
Native Popcorn Time w/ VPN
Native Periscope
Readability app for offline reading
Web:
Mobirise - there's one for Android, why not Jolla?
Pingendo
Responsive web browser, for testing
Heck, why not add stuff that I know will never happen to the list like Unity 3D support, AngularJS and NodeJS development alongside a decent friggin' editor support (I'd take Atom over Brackets), something integrated w/ SSH and code editing like Panic Coda, something seriously detailed with proper layers and layer application methods and a modern UI like Procreate or Paper, something for business like a mashup of Scannable and Freshbooks (I'm actually partial to Slimvoice) and call that a day where the engineers that are well represented in this thread allow the creatives to live alongside in this digital freedom called Jolla.

</rant>

I just want cool stuff that doesn't look like ****, that actually is used by more than just a couple of people that know something about UI/UX and it helps Sailfish become more of a household name and I get to use my upcoming tablet in a way I'd love to see it done whereas Android and iOS plain limit me.

Sorry for the long post.

I use Daily Comics Reader as CBR and it doesn't have huge arrows, nor does it have an amateurish UX.

I agree that an improved Twitter client is needed, but Veskuh is still pushing updates to Tweetian so who knows how good it's gonna be in a few months. For me it works fine though but a few features are missing. Not enough for me to install an Android client, I love Tweetian too much for that, but it would be nice if they could be implemented.

As for note-taking apps: I want a native OneNote app :)

Do you mean this by any chance?

If so, I'd have to say that the UI leaves a lot to be desired personally. If not, please link me to what you meant. For a decent CBR, I've been using Astonishing Comic Reader with its ability to sync to OneDrive, Box & Dropbox.

Yes to integration! No separate apps when everything can be in one place!

Whoever implements the following features in Telepathy (which is used for XMPP in Sailfish, but also in desktop applications like Empathy) will forever be my hero, and I'll send you some money as well.

Re: What apps do you want to see on Sailfish? Part II

While I wholeheartedly agree that integration is the way to go, instead of apps, I don't think such requests belong to this thread (there are already some on the list and I don't think they belong there either).

In my opinion (correct me if I'm wrong), this thread should provide a source of inspiration to anyone with some developing skills. Proposals for changes in SailfishOS cannot be picked by anyone to implement (except for the Browser, Document viewer etc., but it's not that easy either), so these proposals belong to TJC.

Just my 2c.
