Worth buying an N9 these days?

Probably a bit of a daft question considering that this is a community of N9 / Maemo enthusiasts,

I'm considering buying an N9- the prices seem rock bottom and I've always wondered what they were like.

I've been a long term Symbian user- currently using one of three Nokia 808s - thats how much I like Symbian. I have in the past tried Android- never took to it- and also bought then sold a Jolla handset- again, never took to it.

Couple of questions- if I buy an N9 -brand new- are there updates available? - Should I install a new firmware? - (I've got Delight on each of my Symbian phones) - or is the stock firmware fine?

Are there Apps available? - is there an official store any more? - an unofficial one perhaps?

Looking forward to any feedback- thanks.

Re: Worth buying an N9 these days?

Worth buying? depends on your reasons for choosing N9.

I've never used it (for a long time) but I played with a friend's N9 which came for USB fix.

Hardware is awesome .. I'd buy one just for that.

Software/apps -- the Harmattan community is still supporting it quite well, so many things do work. An unofficial "store" does exist ..

some people feel the N9 was a regressing when compared to the N900 .. in some ways, I agree.

At the end of it all, just choose what you believe will satisfy you in the long term ... Do your research on the strengths and weaknesses of both devices.

Maybe we'll just see you on the N900 side ;)

Re: Worth buying an N9 these days?

Curiosity is probably the reason for considering the N9 - I've always thought its a cracking looking phone and wondered what its like to use.
I tried the Jolla- I personally didn't like it- the interface for me felt unintuitive - if I'd persisted that I might have grown to like it- but overall, the hardware, especially the camera was a let down.

The camera for me is a big part of my phone- as a keen hillwalker I use the camera all the time- whilst the N9 won't replace my Nokia 808- I'm pretty sure the 8MP + Carl Zeiss lens will more than do a good job.

Thanks for your reply.

I have never seen a Jolla .. but the UI should be roughly the same as N9's UI ...

ymmv..

N9 appears to be a far nicer looking phone- think I'll jump in and get one.

Cheers

and there is at least one more thread of same/similar content (but did not find just now)

here is the other one

That should be enough for the first decision/month-of-playing-around :)

(ofc there are still plenty of things to discover: just like that the build-in swype vkb had all arrows and full shift and copy/paste functionality :) since the beginning in 2011 :D)

They share a similar paradigm but do have a few aspects that are very different. But if you're a n900/n9 user, then you still be comfortable with the UI.

Not in the least. Not unless you're quite fine with half working apps or convoluted workarounds and have a strong need to tinker and/or want for reliance on folks that might abandon a project without any given notice.

It's to the OP and in regards to buying the N9 now. I would avoid based on the prior criteria I had laid out. But if you're a tinkerer, run with it.

I love my N9, I still keep it. Just wish it could keep up with my needs.

No.

It's still the best phone for me out there, and soon it will be 4 years as I use it.
But since you're on 808('s and heartbreak :)) better buy android/iphone.

Re: Worth buying an N9 these days?

I'll never buy an Apple product- as for the Android devices- would maybe consider a high end one like the SG6- but to be honest, I don't mind tinkering so an N9 would likely keep me amused for a while.

Alternatively, I'll just keep the Nokia 808's they work for me- cover most of what I want a phone to do.

Re: Worth buying an N9 these days?

Any time i see someone somewere selling an n9, i'm tempted to buy it, though i already have one, and not using it as my main phone any more, but after smashing it in anger a month ago, i promtly ordered replacement screen and a black case for the phone and it's now alive again.

Just that, i've removed most stock apps, and finally even stock musicplayer app, because i've got enough of fighting with media tracker on the phone. Quasarmx does the music ok.

Also, the whole time i've had the phone it have had this irritating issue: on a fresh install n9 battery reports that it can keep about 9-14 days on battery in standby mode, but then after fiddling with phone it suddenly can go as low as 1 day of standby only, and i haven't found a fix to it, else than restoring full system from backup (i've done many incremental backups of my phone just because of this buggy behaviour). Maybe it is linked to using internet or hotspot, app-installing or trackers *.db files in home directory, i'm not sure.

Edit: And i've checked, the phone can go full week on battery without sim card nor any usage, so reported 9 days could be correct. It reports 7 days of standby from 79% of power currently.

Speaking from my own experience, 3G is the biggest drain on battery life

Well, I've just bought a black N9 from ebay -the 64GB version- looking forward to it arriving.

Anything I should watch out for?

Re: Worth buying an N9 these days?

For black version, keep it warm in the winter, it developed cracks near camera eye on the back of the phone on mine. Also, continuous wearing of a silicon cover+humidity can damage the nice matte finish of the case, can make it look spotty.

Re: Worth buying an N9 these days?

Thats interesting, wouldn't have expected that.
Anything I should do? - any particular apps I should use? - Where can I indeed get apps?!

I use sports tracker on my Symbian phones a lot- keen to see the N9 version (if there is one) - I'm assuming there is a version of opera too? - What weather apps are good? - Does the N9 have widgets??

How do I transfer music / maps etc etc- does the N9 work with Nokia Suite??

Sorry, so many questions - quite keen to get to grips with this new phone.

Warehouse from openrepos.net for apps
Opera for web
Meecast for weather
Meerun for running

The phone connects as mass storage device to a pc, files can be transfered via file manager.

For stock maps and navigation you need to find the thread with solution here on talk.maemo because both ovi and nokia maps services are shut down.

Here's a vintage photo of my n9s screen featuring my main apps. :-)

Most unique app of n9, imho, is profilematic, worth checking out.

Really useful, thanks- that will give me a great pointer to start with my N9- I've already used MeeRun on my Symbian phones- good app - I did use sportstracker more- but I reckon I could use Meerun easily enough.

Re: Worth buying an N9 these days?

For nice overview of apps made for n9 try n9-apps.com (or my-meego.com), probably can't download from there any more, but descriptions and screenshots could be helpful.

Also there's this another thread about archived content of ovi store, which i knew nothing about til today: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=166

Re: Worth buying an N9 these days?

My N9 turned up today- lovely looking phone- very classy.

I'm just in the process of getting used to it- so far downloaded Warehouse- MeeRun and Meecast.

I'm surprised to see my Facebook feed integrates with the phone- keeps asking me for my password when I first log in though- which is a bit annoying.
