Camera phone competition September 2015:"The golden hour"

September is here along with some of it's autumn colors. Since the light is most beautiful during the golden hours of the day (morning and evening, when the sun glows orange), it would be nice to see some nice colours during those hours. So it's not important what you're shooting but we have to see that golden light clearly.

The rules are:
Photos must be taken during this month
Photos must be taken by the posting member
Photos must be taken with a camera phone
Users post only one photo per entry
Users can change the entry only once
Users must name the phone they used
(so I could include it for voting)
Last three days of this month are for voting

Here are some tips and examples.
Link 1, link 2, link 3

And a basic composition rule
Rule of thirds (the most important composition rule!)

Last month's theme

Happy shooting!

robthebold 2015-09-13 18:41

Today was looking promising for shooting an entry for this month but the clouds rolled in about half hour after sunrise . . . Working with nature is even.harder than with.animals and children! (to steal from W.C.Fields)

hmm... nobody yet?
okay, so I'll just make a start.

Sorry for posting kind of typical tourist shot.
But I think it fits the theme.
This was taken in Prague on my Jolla last week.

Golden Hour -- check.

Rule of Thirds -- check (IMHO).

Tourist shot? Who cares? Looks good to me. Thanks for posting! I still haven't posted mine yet . . .

@ste-phan you always amaze me with your angle and composition. This is a master piece, and it's from Jolla's weak camera.

This puts me off submitting mine. ;)

Just post your entry already please; I am so not into competition and we all like to see pictures :)

About the Jolla camera: maybe you already know this but just in case: always try to set exposure manually , even though there are only 5 steps, as well as the white balance.

Leaving those parameters on auto are generally not going to do the already very mediocre camera any justice.

In my experience, really poor tools can ruin a good job but mediocre tools can't. Only a bad craftsman blames the tools. A good one can carve a David with a kitchen knife.

I am not an expert by any stretch of imagination. I would not even call myself an advanced amateur. This is all just my personal opinion and may be a complete BS. But I can tell you this. I have seen a lot of pictures in my long life. Some good, some bad. And the cut between the "yeah, OK" and the "wow!" was never in the camera. It was always in the finger that pressed the trigger.

Your picture, ste-phan, is an ace. I cannot fault it.

chenliangchen 2015-09-27 21:04

Re: Camera phone competition September 2015:"The golden hour"

Here I come - Just share the picture as ste-phan said.

This picture obviously did not take in "golden hours" (So feel free to disqualify it...) but I do have something golden - the moon.

It is Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival (also known as Moon Festival?) today and usually the family gets together and eat moon cakes.

But today it's just me drinking with myself but I took my trusty old pal Nokia 808 with me and shot the moon... Just now. :)

http://www.liangchenchen.com/wp-cont...9-27-10552.jpg

I cropped the picture as original 34MP is way too large but did not change anything.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival everyone! ;)

Last night was supposed to be full lunar eclipse, when the moon would be full and fiery red... bummer, woke up well in time for it but the cloud cover over southern finland was so dense there was no sight of the moon....

Next one is not due until 2018, so there.

@chenliangchen, you forgot to mention the phone you used to take that picture. I am really impressed with the moon. All the pictures I made of the moon even with real cameras ended up burnt out. No chance to see the maria like in your photo.

This morning I was watching the last 1/2 hr of the lunar eclipse had to just tell myself to enjoy the spectacle and not bother taking out the Jolla phone..

But your picture shows clearly that with the old but mighty 808 Pureview, a lot is possible as you got the full moon captured with nice detail retention. :)

It was taken by 808. The moon was quite bright in night sky was trying to avoid over exposure. I turned ISO to the lowest (125 on 808) and exposure to the lowest as well (-4) ND filter on. but since 808 does not have option to adjust shutter time I turned on flashlight. (That looks weird, I know...) to reduce shutter time and I got that picture. (And no need to use tripod)

Tried same setting with Panasonic CM1 the same time but I never got a good picture as 808.

Re: Camera phone competition September 2015:"The golden hour"

I'm not happy to say that this month there won't be any voting. I appreciate Casanunda's, ste-phan's and chenliangchen's efforts but the last photo is disqualified because it's not really what the theme says and two entries aren't enough for voting. So I guess I'll just make an open theme competition next month...

I'm not pleased at all with the response this month, and I can't find a way to interest people anymore.
This competition was created to have a little fun on the forum and I can't offer any prizes either so help me, suggest something that could improve the competition. Any suggestions and talk will go to this thread. Thanks.

I've gotta admit that I was never in a position this month to take a picture of a sunrise or sunset; either the sun wasn't there (cloudy), or the cellphone wasn't there (I find that I don't carry mine around much at those times of day), or I wasn't there (indoors during that time :) ). This subject demanded a bit more preparation on my part than others...

That said, I think it was a fine topic, and I don't think it didn't interest people (at least not me). :)

Re: Camera phone competition September 2015:"The golden hour"

Yeah, I'm guilty of that one as well. I bring my camera with me and shoot some stuff in the morning or evening but all of a sudden I forget that I have a phone in my pocket. If it weren't for this competition I probably would never even shoot with my phone now after I've bought myself a new camera. :)

robthebold 2015-09-28 19:00

Re: Camera phone competition September 2015:"The golden hour"

I went and tried a few times when the light was good and other responsibilities were at least briefly lifted, but just couldn't get a good subject and shot in the limited radius I'm allowed to roam in at those times of day. I liked the theme, but still failed . . . :(

But thanks to the posters of the entries that were received, and I'll try harder next month.

BTW, my wife -- not a member here, but rather an iPhone user -- accidentally got a pretty good pic in the theme of the month. I probably should have gone ahead posted it in the "non-adjudicated, exhibit-only" category ;)

There might be more entries join on the last day. But even with 2 entries we can still have a vote, as last year "Imperial and Commonwealth" topic just had 2 entries as well. I guess it happens sometime. :)

Me: same as Copernicus plus number 4 - the sun was there, the phone was there, even I was there, but driving at 80 mph down a busy motorway. Not the best of times to take competition pictures ;)

Really like this picture.

It's good example of golden hour picture in itself, but the girl (or maybe a boy) in the middle part of picture is interesting. She appears to have a winter coat like this:

http://puffercoats.org/wp-content/up...nter-coats.jpg

Yet, the runners in the foreground seem to be in a warm climate and ste-phan's nick is located in Hanoi, which I would assume would also mean warmer temperatures.

Okay, enough about that. Just got hang up on that detail. :)

Last night was also a supermoon. Quite a rare thing for them both to occur at the same time, the next supermoon total lunar eclipse won't occur until 2033! I was quite fortunate that it was a clear night where I am (very uncommon in my city!). I took some photos on my N900 but they didn't come out very well. I fiddled with ISO and exposure to no avail.

The full eclipse lasted for maybe a couple of hours here. Even more if you count the time from when it first started to eclipse.

For a comparison with chenliangchen's 808 masterpiece, here is the best picture my Jolla could master. It was taken last night, about 18 hours after the eclipse/supermoon combo. The moon was very low, you had to shift your position to see it over the rooftops. It was also extremely huge. There are some street lights visible in the photo as well. The moon is the smudge in the middle. I used manual settings. Tried about 20 different permutations, none of them made a smidgeon of a difference.

EDIT:
Just to clarify, this is NOT my entry. This is.

Haha, back in my early N900 days I spent a lot of time in Hanoi but this is Oostend in Belgium and in the climate over there you never know what to wear one hour in advance.. However I can confirm that Hanoians are very eager to start wearing such jackets whenever the temp drops below 20 degrees in the sometimes very chilling wintertime.
When reviewing my picture on Jolla I thought it was an African hair style but on the computer screen we can see it more clearly :D

I guess when it's normal light, Jolla camera can be a mediocrity and still can take good pictures, but in extreme condition like that it completely fails, Jolla camera's sensor size will be incapable to take night shots in that condition I guess. (Most camera sensors on mobile phones will fail, anyway.)

But we can still see the moon being very big, compare with other objectives.

It it were the case to extend it I could go for making a beautiful golden hour N900 picture in Autumn's Berlin! If not, the next theme.
