Y Adapter / Splitter For Headset

Does anyone know where I can get a Y-adapter or -splitter in order to plug a headset with separate earphone and microphone plugs into an N800? The N800 side needs a 4-conductor 3.5 mm plug just like the stock headset has and the other end needs two 3.5 mm or 2.5 mm jacks, one stereo and one microphone.

I live in the USA but I'm so desperate that I'd pay postage from Antarctica  to get one!

Thanks

I'm interested in that one, but has anyone tested and verified that it actually works on an N800? From what I read on the dev. mailing list it sure didn't look trivial to make a working splitter by hand..

I confirm that it does work fine on my N800. Tested e.g. with Skype (full duplex) and Maemo Recorder. Mike and headphone connectors are not marked so you need to try 2 times in the worst case.

The package I received shows part number ADA-XDA325MY35F, which is the 3.5mm splitter, but what I got was a connector with a 2.5mm male plug, 3.5mm female receptacle, and a built-in mike. Looks nothing like the photo.

This is what I wanted: https://www.seidioonline.com/index.a...ROD&ProdID=349

This is what I got: https://www.seidioonline.com/index.a...ROD&ProdID=300 or https://www.seidioonline.com/index.a...ROD&ProdID=517 ...not sure which.

I left Expansys a comment, but I'll have to contact their support to get this swapped.

*sigh*

Moral: be careful ordering these things!!! :(

The one I got from the original link (seido, splitter for IPAQ) is good though. Too bad if they're out of stock. Hopefully you'll get it sorted out.

Just got an email back from expansys (note: use returns@expansys-usa.com
for products purches in the US, not the other address shown by expansys, us-returns@expansys-usa.com).

We'll see how it plays out.

BTW, products still out of stock at Seidio, and I cannot find another source. :(

Re: Y Adapter / Splitter For Headset

Oops, turned out I had the wrong part number as well! Not sure how that happened. Expansys still messed up regardless, but I'm sure glad I caught my mistake before I reordered! The Seidio part is ADA-IP6335MY35F. Seidio has them back in stock, but their cart refuses to accept my order...

*sigh 2*

Re: Y Adapter / Splitter For Headset

Well, BAD NEWS.

I just got off the phone with Seidio. They decided recently to quit making these adapters due to low demand. It isn't even supposed to be on their website; it's removed from the ordering system.

I informed them that they may want to rethink this decision in light of the internet tablets' need. Hopefully they will look into it (emails and calls from folks here can only help). I just bought a nice Plantronics headset and really want to use it with the tablets. I may rig something up on my own if I can find the parts.

Anyway, VERY disappointing.

EDIT: This guy is on a similar track... http://www.brenorbrophy.com/HG/head_set_ptt.htm

There is a thread around here about hacking up the included pendent. That works good but like you I want to use a headset with a mic. Wiring that is a little trickier.

I am not surprised that this is hard to find as I've not seen a 4 conductor 3.5mm jack on anything but the Nokia.

Got a spliter from Radio Shack a while back--with one end plugged in it gives you
two plugs for two earphones. Costed around 5 bucks.

Right. I tried anyway, and the guy at Radio Shack reached the limit of his experience in about 90 seconds. :D

I was hoping to have this sucker for my next trip (off to Helsinki again this saturday, for a week) but it sure looks doubtful...

I have, however, suggested this as an accessory to the Mothership.

It's on Dell Axims and a few other devices... Seidio folks said the iPhone has one even.

Re: Y Adapter / Splitter For Headset

Shouldn't be all that hard hacking up one out of the comes-with phones, I'd think... but I use a BT headset, so I'm in no great hurry to do any such thing.

At least not hard compared to finding one. But one from Nokia, if it were to happen, would solve that nicely. Then again, they say Nokia makes N800 styluses, too...

OK, but what do you need the mic for on plane trips??? Does WiMAX reach up there for VoIP?

For recording if I wanted (although I'm not sure if I have the nerve to dictate story ideas on a crowded plane... lol). But for the most part you're right, no need on the plane, but certainly afterward.

My main use for it is with Skype (when I want to use a headset and mike - I can't use the provided earbuds).

I asked for that back at post #21 of the OTG adapter thread:

Tex, he's onto the conspiracy! Quick go to plan Romeo!

Seriously though, I'm sorry about that one qole, I remember seeing a request about USB charging, but those that thread got so overwhelmed so quickly that I missed a lot of the initial posts.

Anyways, good news for all on this one, I've gone ahead and ordered some parts and as soon as they come in I should be able to tackle this one; I'll let you know as soon as I've got something tangible!

Thanks,

Other thread got an interesting post:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...49&postcount=6
iPhone adapters seem to work, but may need a ~1mm spacer added so they don't go in the jack too far.

If you can find an iPhone splitter (the ones listed had built-in mic) then that might be a sensible route...

Texrat 2008-04-10 15:40

Re: Y Adapter / Splitter For Headset

It's funny you mention that, Benson, because the guy at Seidio said they could find no new markets for the splitters so decided to cancel them...

Benson 2008-04-10 16:22

Re: Y Adapter / Splitter For Headset

So it's official: no market for iPhone accessories.
Heh.

I noticed, too, that one of the iPhone adapters had a call button. If it works with the N8x0...

Re: Y Adapter / Splitter For Headset

Well I'm sorry that it took so long, but I wanted to get it right and it took a while to source the correct parts; none the less, here it is:
http://www.electronicproductonline.c...oducts_id=1996

Tested and verified working properly with my N800 (I assume the headphone jack on the N810 is the same); no special spacers or silly fuddling around required. I'm also working on reduced shipping costs to the US (just waiting on confirmation from the "test subject" to say that the product has arrived in a timely manor) that will bring it down from the current rate of $9 to $5. Anyone who's also interested in consolidated purchasing might want to checkout my latest post on the USB OTG thread also.

Thanks!
-Rob

Re: Y Adapter / Splitter For Headset

jolouis, thanks for getting the headset/headphone speaker/microphone adapter made for the N800/N801.

I just got mine (arrived to the US from Canada in less than a week with the $9 shipping). It works great. I'm using it with the Genius HS-02N headset, which is a real bargain, with great sound in and out and extremely comfortable. (It also folds up quite small.) I just Skyped a friend, and it worked great.

(I also got "your" USB adapter, but haven't tried it yet.)

Gives me a chance to provide an update: my suggestion to Nokia to provide this splitter was rejected. So, Rob, the market is all yours!

Curious. I wonder what the reasoning was? Hopefully it wasn't "it's not needed because the device comes with a perfectly good earbuds/mike combo that works". Because that one works only for those with ears of a specific physical design (intelligent or other). Some of us have ears without that flip that holds the earbud in. So we have to use headsets. And they don't normally come with those combo jacks.

(I got my splitter already, as mentioned earlier in the thread).

I'm not sure if I can even go into it, but suffice to say I disagree regardless.

Just bought two of these; surprised that they have a blob of glue-gun glue on the "head", under the jack. I didn't realize these were hand-assembled, I thought you had found a source of pre-made adapters. But as long as it works, I'm happy!

Yup all hand-made (with care and hand-tested three times each of course). The glue actually isn't necessary, but I found with repeated use because they're not injection-molded covers the glue just helps give it a bit more strength so the cover doesn't "pop off" over time. Like most of the N8x0 stuff I do, there's a really cool market here for people that are into tablets, but beyond that as we've all seen there isn't a huge base for some of these things, so finding pre-made products is extremely difficult and I usually end up modd-ing or building from scratch. Some things (like the OTGs) make sense to get produced, but the costs are high and demand has to be equally so; I'm more in that "gray area" market... where the demand is more than just a one-off thing, but less than required to justify a huge production run.

Can't say I'm surprised about Nokia saying no to this one, as their focus really tends to be in other areas (If you could use the adapter with every Nokia phone out there I'm sure their reaction would be different). This is one of the great points about the ITT community though... we all kind of help fill the gaps that Nokia leaves open. Helps to Nokia in the end because they get the benefits of having the problems taken care of without having to invest in it, and helps the community by showing that there's room for others to get involved realistically at a business level rather than just a personal level also. (At least that's my hope... though if Nokia does something like bundle their own OTG adapter with the next tablet I'll be disappointed!)

Thanks,
-Rob

Rob, you should make replacement styluses too :D

It would seem you would have that market all to yourself, too.
