Hello there,

I am a newbie here, have read good things about N9 and Meego and got me one. Unfortunately everything seems to be outdated. And all possibilities to bring a new OS to the phone are outdated. Links are down, Nitdroid is down, N9-apps, you will know them all ....I

I really like Meego and think it is the best. I woud give sailfish a try but I cant get to root my N9. I have installed warehouse, but any try to get ino developer-mode fails. No root, no partitioning. Changed repo paths. nothing.

Has anyone an alternative for me. One first flash-try failed but I just re-flashed the original and it worked as before so I am not afraid to try things.

It is a pity that there is no "wine" like thing to make android apps run under Meego. That wound be THE solution. Are there still some people here or am I really way too late with my N9?

N9 and Meego Harmattan is still working somewhat good. But not out-of-the-box unfortunately. You must do some tweakin.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on buying phone with the best OS there ever was, to my oppinion. It is such a shame that idiots managed to get it killed.

@Boxeri: the first link operation failed. The repos are changed, updating still doesn't work. I had allready installed from Warehouse the N9repomirror and devel-su (which is not installable) for some reason. My phone wants to download a file to enable developer mode - which fails of course.

Second link 100% succes. I can navigate!!

@rzr.fr: I need programmer skills to contribute, n'est ce pas?

To be completely honest, once you follow Boxeri's first advice and replace the dead repos with something working, you'll end up with a magnificent device. Have 2 N9s and firmly believe they are the best mobile devices I have ever had.

I think it depends on the project. In some it might be requirement, but in others there might be other way to help, like helping to document the project on the wiki or testing stuff.

If they added android compatibility, fixed the easily-spooked battery manager and swapped the pins on the headphone jack so it was standard for headsets, then the N9 would be absolutely be perfect.

The Jolla Phone fixes all three of those, though at the expense of a whole raft of other things. You win some you lose some.

Maybe you can just document on wiki how to use n9 in 2015 (after nokia dropped support) like flashing OS, repos etc it would be helpful and appreciated

A lot of people here are saying that only older versions of the repo mirror are working. Maybe try an older version if it is not working for you.

seems we have to manage this ourselves....

once, I dont know why, I had the repos switched and some files updated like facebook, twitter and one more. but I dont use these social media. why use facebook? so the update was not really usefull. For some reasons I put the phone back to original and so the alternative repos were gone again...

wiki: there are people who know what they are doing. I just followed a tutorial on youtube to flash my N9. So all I could contribute is to copy and paste their instructions. If you want I can do this. btw, flashing was not successful. Open"xx" could not be installed, BECAUSE I CAN'T GET TO ROOT! and the only success was to flash it back to the original version. ##

I will check the other links to find a start. I am interested. I have been writing for the german wiki of Manjaro Linux so why not.

Agree on the battery manager, though a restart usually fixes that.

Hmmm, I don't have problem using headsets on my N9.

There's two standards.

There's the OMTP standard, which the N9 followed and pretty much everything before that. OMTP also made microUSB standard, set standards for SIM cards, charging... etc

Then there's the later American Headset Jack standard which reverses the microphone and ground and it's what Apple followed physically at least. Apple use their own signalling protocol so volume up/down often doesn't work or the mic. It's sometimes referred to as CTIA or AHJ.


Guess which one won.

Which, really, is kind of surprising, considering how often Apple backs losing (and pseudo-proprietary) cabling formats. There was the Apple serial cable, the Apple Desktop Bus, Firewire (later renamed Firewire 400), Firewire 800, and lately they've adopted Thunderbolt (which might have a chance...).

I think Apple prefers to adopt "standards" that are unpopular, simply because they become pseudo-proprietary for them. Once a standard becomes popular, Apple tends to try to phase it out and move on to something else. Apple has kind of surprising by supporting USB on their devices for so long now, but of course they rushed to USB-C as quickly as it came out, so they're still finding ways to try and make life harder for folks using non-Apple devices. :)

I think the problem for Apple often is they back the technically better standard or invent their own where one doesn't exist and then the budget PC crowd pile in with something cheaper that is not as good but suffices. eg. Firewire v USB or Lightning v microUSB. I'm not sure that's the case in the OMTP v AHJ debate though. That seems a pretty stupid argument.

USB-C is a good thing though. I'd be quite happy if that sees off USB, microUSB, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort, Micro HDMI, Lightning and especially power. A laptop I can charge from my bike's 5v hub generator or any USB charger/battery like I do a tablet or phone today would be pretty handy.

Equally, the N9 "suffered" from following the USB charging standard too closely to the point I used to carry around a dongle that shorted the data pins on a USB cable so that I could use anyone's USB charger/battery including "Apple spec" chargers that negotiated the charging rate on the data pins in contradiction of the standard. Apple did that so that you couldn't charge an iPad with a low power iPod charger - a simple idea for their goals but rubbish for everyone else.

hey there,

I was lacking time to continue to get root access to my N9.
I have tried actual (0.7.2) and the old (0.6.0) Versions of the repomirror , but installation of developer-tools from warehouse still fails.
With myExplorer I was able to change the /ect/apt/sources.lists entry of aegis .... but with no result.
No root. No alterative OS possible.
Now I am asking myself what happened if I formated the phones memory with fdisk or gparted. Would that be possible? After that flashing with sailfish? or ubuntu one?
could that be succesful? gparted shows me that the phone has only 8 GB but it has obviously 16! Is there no method to format it completely?

one the other side I must say that since "maps" working it feels nearly like a full smartphone and I dont knowif Sailfish would really be a step forward.
