Good bye Sailfish
Just want to say thanks to all users that supported me all these years.
My phone was stolen again and I'm not planning buy another one since there's no more support from Jolla. It was a nice time, but it's time to move on. Regards! PS: Mods can move this thread to right section if you want. |
Re: Good bye Sailfish
Oh man...
my heart goes out to you cepiperez that is really really really not a nice thing for anyone to do to another ..let alone this time of year... |

The Jolla phone is at its cheapest price right now and who says there is no more support from Jolla - is this something you actually know?, because as I see it, there is another software update release in the pipeline, said to be rolling out end of this week (we shall see of course) - will it be the last ever update?, I don't think so. Intex Sailfish phones are also said to be going on sale in q1 2016 - there needs to be support for the new market. Yes, things look shaky at Jolla HQ, but the lights are still on and financial restructuring is said to be taking place. Anyway, sorry to see you go, your software has always been a pleasure to use, from Symbian times, to N9 and now here on SFOS. Good luck and perhaps change your job so you can stay off that shitty train!! Regards, |

@cepiperez
Sorry for the news, hope some day your return (if jolla still exist), argentina is a hard place sometimes... |
Re: Good bye Sailfish
Hi cepiperez. It's such a pity... you did an excelent work for the comunity.
I'm from Argentina too. Where do you live? CABA or Prov.BsAs?? |

Re: Good bye Sailfish
So long and thanks for all the fish.
You'll be missed by people you've never even heard of. May your future hold (at the very least) a more safe way to work. This might sound selfish (sailfish, hah – sorry), but would you consider "donating" FileCase/FlowPlayer to the Community by uploading it to GitHub? Even if no one's available to take over development, I guess there is a lot to learn from the sources for Newbies. |

As long as it is in our hand it is usable for thousands of people. No more software support from Jolla is sad but it means more support needed from you. I am still on 1.7.28 and after testing 2.0 preview I already decided that it was N900 / N9 all over again -sing it out with unsupported software- because of the road Jolla was apparently taking with their design choices. Till my Jolla disintegrates (which of course it might do quicker than an N900) I hope t be running my applications. Call recorder, Quasar MX, Jockr, Firefox, ... I only need a few applications - and am allergic to app stores. Will pay for something I like 10 fold of typical app price. Maybe this is of no interest of serious developers but I just want to draw that however small, there is a market. Who needs Jolla anyway? Jolla phone just works. It runs applications and has good battery life. Where is the time that we would check our phone firmware with obscure codes and decide the other person was more lucky because his was more recent :D |
Re: Good bye Sailfish
@cepi
This is not only a pity but a real bad luck for you personally and would be a big loss for this community. So what if we start a fund raiser for a N9/Jolla for you? We would need to know how to get that phone to Argentina, remembering last time's failure. ( how did you get your 'current' lost Jolla to your place?) |

Q2: do you have Paypal? Q3: does anyone (HtheB) volunteer to be a Paypal-proxy (IBAN to Paypal) for me? Cheers. |
Re: Good bye Sailfish
Q3: I do! (However please check IBAN fees between DE and UK first)
EDIT: Provided I understand it correctly: you want to send IBAN to person X who would forward it via PayPal to Cepi. If I got it wrong, then please ignore this noise :o |
Re: Good bye Sailfish
@reinob
generous as always! :) HtheB will for sure act as proxy. ;) I am afraid pichlos offer would include a fee (up to 20 but you may check with your bank). Else I can do so, too. But first we will need some info from cepiperez. |
Re: Good bye Sailfish
I thought there was a problem with some stupidly high import taxes in Argentina ?

To a bank account would be eur->usd the rate would be roughly 1.09240 and no extra fees it will take 5 days. |
Re: Good bye Sailfish
sorry to hear about your stolen phone cepi and I want to say goodbye sailfish too bcoz I had money for Jolla phone but I spent it on crapdroid. waited too long for Jolla successor but not any more.
|
Re: Good bye Sailfish
I can get things to Argentina from the UK through friends and family, but that depends on the time of the year of course. Things would usually arrive in CABA (or Capital for the old schoolers) so it would be a bit of commuting for Cepi to go pick it up, assuming he's still interested ;)
|
Re: Good bye Sailfish
I also have a friend in UK and his wife is from Argentina and I believe they will go there in the next few months. They are coming here for Christmas so I'll ask.

Re: Good bye Sailfish
CepiPerez, reading all these awesome great replies, it seems like you're not done with us (yet) ! :D
We need developers like you to keep on sailing! |

It should have been called a new version of Maemo though the graphical interface was quite different. If you own an N9 go to the about device section. |
Re: Good bye Sailfish

Just a different name. Harmattan is just a code name like all other devices had (Maemo 5 was Fremantle) Just to avoid conufsion, they just let MeeGo stay in the name. MeeGo itself was RPM based, while the N9 is still Debian ;) Here is a video that I recorded 3 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX6axn-Id_E |
Re: Good bye Sailfish
Yes it is basically Maemo but it is not called Maemo as I myself stated. It is called Meego because of the whole Intel thing that never went anywhere. The gui is different in many ways from the old tablets and N900 we had.
I do agree the Intel "real" Meego was rpm based and didn't share much with N9 Meego which is deb and basically Maemo. The original plan was that the phones would go to the rpm based Meego and the devices would be more consistent but that never happened. I do wonder if that is part of the reason why Sailfish is rpm based, not sure but it would make sense. Anyway point still stands get him an N900 if one wants to say because this site is called Maemo it should be a Maemo device. Sad thing is this is at least the 2nd time his phone got stolen. I wonder why they target him, not like the Jolla is the highest end phone. You'd think they would grab iphones. |
