Jolla phone telephony stopped working

Hi guys,

I also posted this on TJC, please forgive me if you use both sites. I have a feeling I'm more likely to get a technical answer over here.

Anyway, my Jolla phone has suddenly stopped connecting to the mobile network (no 2g/3g/4g). Wifi and Bluetooth are fine.

Here's what I get from the journal:

Code:

nemo ~ $ sudo systemctl restart ofono
nemo ~ $ sudo systemctl status ofono -l

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Is my SIM broken, or could this be a software problem?

Did you try another SIM card?
Seems there is a problems reading the SIM.
Obviously, could also be bad SIM contacts on device. Try cleansing them.

Thanks, I don't have another SIM to test with but I can probably get one. I'll have a play and see what happens.

That would have been my first guess. Reports of bad SIM contacts started flooding the forums while the first Jolla phones were still wet from the factory.

You have another phone? I doubt it's the simcard.

Just put some paper ontop for more force and you are good to go ;)

Well I have an n900, but the SIM slot is a different size and I don't think I still have the part I popped this bit out of.

I just tried that, unfortunately it didn't work for me :(

Did you ever have the phone in for SIM slot repair?

juiceme 2015-12-31 12:21

Re: Jolla phone telephony stopped working

Incidentally, just yesterday night I swapped my simcard off from my Jolla to my Nexus5, and when I put it back I could not get the device to recognize the sim any longer.

I first thought it was a mechanical problem and tried to twiggle the sim back and forth, to get the device to recognize it, but no avail.
I have often live-swapped simcards previously with no problems like that.

Finally I power-cycled my Jolla, and then it recognized the card with no problems.
Too bad I did not try to restart ofono before doing that, as it might have helped also.

I just wasted my uptime of 65 days for it, bummer!

Nope.

I went into town today and got a new SIM on a different network (I was planning to switch anyway), which is now working fine.

So it really does seem to have been a problem with the SIM card, which was less than a year old!

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

Same issue here, what's exactly a "power-cycle"? A simple reboot? Doesn't work for me :(

This morning, I just switched off my Jolla and removed my TOHKBD in order to extract the SDXC card. Once finished and back into my Jolla, it asked me for SIM pin, but I ended with no GSM signal.

Put the SIM into a cheap ZTE and worked fine. Back into Jolla, still nothing. WiFi is OK.

Journal log:

Code:

Requested file structure differs from SIM: 6fb7
SMS History Probe for modem: 0x1bbee00
Network time: Registered interface org-ofono.NetworkTime, path /ril_0
ril_set_online: RIL_REQUEST_RADIO_POWER 1
data reg status probed 0
Requested file structure differs from SIM: 6fb7
data reg changes 2 (0), attached 0
Unable to read mailbox dialling numbers from SIM
voce registration changes 2 (-1)
export_entries_one_storage_cd with ME failed

This was *after* checking the SIM card into the ZTE handset, so I am unsure the mailbox stuff is not related to some kind of incompatibility.

Getting a new SIM is a real pain in the *** for me and I'm starting to feel scared: I'm remembering how my N900 started to break €10 SIM cards one after another, because of a irreparable bad contact (that was the main reason I bought my first Jolla, by the way).

Really? Here in the UK you can get a prepaid SIM card in any supermarket. Either with some credit included, for the price of that credit, or without credit for £1 or below. £1 does not seem too much for a quick test.

I have never ever heard of a phone breaking a SIM card. I had one SIM card for 16 years, moved from one phone to another 8 times, and it is still going strong. My pet peeve is that damn Jolla decided to change the format "just because", making my SIM card incompatible.

Anyway, your case sounds like the problem is with your phone, not your SIM card. If it were mine, I would open it and try to fix it myself (it is most likely just a contact problem after all) but if you are not comfortable with that, send it to Jolla Care or take it to any random phone repair kiosk down the road.

Oh, and...

Turn off and on.

It is more than just a software reboot since it may involve different initialization for the hardware components.

Power cycle:

I prefer to use that word for
power off
remove battery
wait 30 secomds / push power button for 3 seconds
power on

Re: Jolla phone telephony stopped working

@Peterleinchen: Thanks, no luck.

It's hard for me because when supermarkets are open, I'm at work. And when I'm done, supermarkets are closed.

Not your average phones. But this second hand N900 lacked one of these little screws, so one internal component was not firmly placed. And this component seemed to hold the SIM card. Worked fine for one or two years, but some day it started to "dance". The result was about ten connections/disconnections per minute when I was handling the phone, even more while walking. That killed all those SIMs.

Phone SIM contacts seem to be OK. Let's bet (and pray) on the card. I'm gonna get the answer next Saturday.

I just used a SIM cutter on my SIM. Worked fine.

(although I may need to get a new SIM soon, since mine is too old to support 4G)

Sounds like what was happening to me, even if the cause might have been a software bug (in ofono) rather than hardware.

I guess there's some flash memory on the card and too many reads/writes can kill it.

well. Yes. A SIM have memory.
for contacts
for SIM apps (banking fx)
for carrier apps

basically the apps are tiny java code, stored on card.
the cards can more than just provide you with a number ;)
its even exploitable.

I used simple scissors and a diagram. And I managed to get a "cut-out" mini-SIM remainder from a telephone shop, for free: they throw out a lot every day.

http://www.ais.co.th/3g-postpaid/mul...isize_pack.png

That way, I can use my previously micro-sized SIM (Jolla) on my ZTE (mini SIM slot).

Well that's mildly terrifying. I knew you could store contacts / text messages etc. on there but I had no idea there were actual programs on there too, I assumed all that was handled by the OS.

Java, of all things...

Tried today another SIM card and no luck. Time to write an E-mail to Finland.

Wonder if a factory reset (another one) could do something useful.

I still suspect a hardware fault. Most likely something simple like a bent contact. But if you send it off to Jolla, they will reflash it for you anyway.

I cut mine with scissors. It works fine. The issue is backwards compatibility with more sensible phones that use a normal SIM size.

Thank you for your clear description of the fault as well as steps you tried to fix your device. Based on your findings I would find it very likely, that either the SIM-card reader is faulty, or then the devices antennae for detecting cellular networks are for some reason dysfunctional.

For this reason I would suggest you send in your phone for repair (...)
I'll keep reporting. My handset is still under warranty, so shipping costs are covered by Jolla Inc.

By the way, I just noticed we're at the Sailfish subforum and not the Jolla one... I'm not sure if I must keep talking here about this stuff.

RMA tracking:
Jan 7: E-mail sent to Jolla Care through https://jolla.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Jan 8: Jolla response: I must send my handset to Finland for repair. They ask me for personal data.

Meanwhile, I try to find another phone for daily use.

Jan 19: Data sent to Jolla. They give me a PDF "air way bill" which I must print out and attach to the package.
Jan 20: Package delivered at my FedEx nearest office.
Jan 26: My Jolla is "back" in Finland.
Jan 27: Jolla Care gives me a link, http://www.kirjaahuolto.fi/huollontila/haku.php , to track the progress of the repair.
Feb 2: "Tracking link" says mainboard has been changed.
Feb 3: Jolla packaged and returning Spain, delivery scheduled at Feb 10.
