Can I use n9 as something else than a phone?

I have this 64gb n9 lying around in my house.

- The microusb doesnt work from certain angles
- The Glass on the screen is a bit broken (but works just fine).
- The Battery is rubbish, 10 minutes on "screen saver" and then it dies.

I've used it as a Clock in my Bathroom with charger placed 24/7 :D
Can I use this phone for example as a hard drisk drive?

Sure but if your microusb is not reliable I would not use it as USB drive.
Of course you can use it as WLAN attached storage, for example. :D

Re: Can I use n9 as something else than a phone?

- Hook it on a car and use as GPS with offline maps
- Plug it on a desk as a music player (some 3rd party player on harmattan was great) or FM-Radio player?

Use it as a webserver/sftp server sql server etc etc etc

robthebold 2016-03-18 14:27

It can be a upnp server or controller (or both). Or a remote control for your kodi (fka xbmc ) media computer.

Would be cool to make it a webcam or security camera-type device, but I didn't find suitable software to do that without writing a bunch of stuff myself.

Less glorious but still useful, the good parts could be used to resurrect another dead N9 with different problems.

"Can I use n9 as something else than a phone?"

the answer is ...

Yes...yes you can...

a doorstop...
for one...
a self defense tool...
you can throw it at an assailant ...use it as a hand to hand weapon even...

a chew toy for your puppy...

a wide screen prop in a home made barbie doll movie (if you are into that kind of thing)

the list goes on...

A working scale TV in a dollhouse would actually be pretty cool.

Re: Can I use n9 as something else than a phone?

Mine has none of those problems (well, the battery is not great, but is still usable), and I am still asking myself what I can use it for.

I like the barbie home TV idea.

Finding new use for old hardware usually doesn't work for me but ymmv.

You could make it into a dedicated MP3 player - attach a cheap speaker set and voilą.
An alarm clock
Timer (for in the kitchen)
Digital Picture Frame replacement

That's what my teacher said about my calculator. "Put it in your shirt pocket and it may save your life one day."

meemorph 2016-03-19 08:29

Use it with an anti theft tool (ex prey) in a vehicle. If you forgot the parking position you can ask it. If it is stolen you know where it is.

Re: Can I use n9 as something else than a phone?

If it is the 64GB version it could integrate with an old amp / speaker set as FLAC / MP3 player.

But I have no clue how good the sound reproduction is.. forgot to compare during my short time with the N9.

I find the N900 inferior to the Nokia 808. Would like to know where the N9 ranks.

Donate it to someone who has a use for it?

If you can't find any use, its obvious that you don't need anything from this phone.
Give it to someone that wants to fix it and use it. Make someone happy with something you dont even use.

Waw! I always found the N900 ring and voice too quiet. That comparison shows that the N9 is even worse.
I definitely find the Jolla even quieter but if I enter Jolla in the comparison, many lines turn out blank, including the audio levels. Pity.

The N900 struck me as quiet in the beginning but I came to understand that the speakers are of higher quality and so the sound at whatever volume is less high pitched attention attracting.

Poor Jolla has neither volume level nor sound quality.. It plays its ringing tune on a frequency that my ears just can't seem to catch easily.. I always have to wonder what is this background noise before I realize it is the phone "ringing"..
Also the application Quasar MX seems to be wasted on Sailfish as long as Sailfish keeps zombie-ing in this placeholder hardware that is the "First One".

The 3 phone spec comparison is saying nothing about the perceived audio playback quality of the N9 as a replacement for DAC, CD Player or dedicated music player in a HIFI system.

For what it is worth the value of the N9 64GB as a media player is somewhat confirmed in this conversation, but it leaves me wonder if an N8 + 64GB SD is not the better option ;)

I really would have done it already if it were easy to securely wipe the memory. But so much has changed since I was using it, and firmware/flasher harder to come by...figuring out how to do it before giving it to someone is a time waster I am not up for.

I have bought 5 N900's in the last 1.5 years and only one was wiped. The rest had photo's / mail / conversations / contacts etc etc.
Most people don't care or are not aware that these phones don't wipe themselves after the sim card is removed.

Happy to not be most people.

Re: Can I use n9 as something else than a phone?

I do not own a n9 but even my spare n8/n900 serve on regular basis as:

- Timelapse device if you have some work to document
- Babyphone
- Surveillance- or Webcam
- mobile wifi data storage
- spare data sim hotspot
- Dedicated Navi to not get interrupted by calls
- torch and car youtube device for the kids
- webradio (mostly SomaFM)

So, after a towel, i can not imagine a more universal helper than a spare smartphone!

That kind of number just screams for a bigger, broader survey. My gut feeling tells me the results will be the same or even worse if you investigate on a larger scale.

After all: The N900 used to be a special device, usually seen in the hands of people far from ordinary...

Re: Can I use n9 as something else than a phone?

I have purchased four N900s. Only two of them have been flashed, the two purchased from fellow TMO members. The other two were from eBay: one sold by a pawn shop, who "did not know how to turn it on". All that was needed was to charge the battery. That one still had the last owner's personal data on. To the point that I could find who the last owner was and contact him directly, in case the phone was stolen (it wasn't.). The other one was wiped through the system menu, which means no contacts or email accounts but the Sent folder was still full. I suspect very few users, even advanced ones, are aware of that vulnerability.
