Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

Waiting for my new/old one to come in the mail, I figure it'll be inevitable that I start making little programs for mine for things I need (check my bank account, uber, etc). Small things that don't take long to code, rather than large projects.

Anyone still need anything done, who currently use their phones?

Yes, still out here, I have a feeling N900 usage period will overlap and contain my Jolla usage period :)

I miss Firefox: reading mode, save as PDF etc..

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

Daily user here.

My only real disappointment with this device has been the unability to sync my Evolution calendar/tasks/contacts directly with my N900, without having to rely on a third-party solution like Funambol.

But it's not a trivial task since Nokia managed to screw up syncevolution, somehow, somewhere...

I guess the only thing I do miss that might be realistic to achieve is a better MPD solution for the N900, rather than the buggy and ugly client we have now (CuteMPD).

uber for the N900 would be ... fantastic :)

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

Folks using a N900 in 2016 are probably not as app crazy as the Android/Apple crowd. I am very pleased with the current software available but of course some stuff can be improved. Would like some better browsing experience, Telegram GUI, improved security. Probably not the small tasks you are looking for though.

One thing I liked about Android and doesn't seem to be available for Meamo is a more advance swipe to unlock. So not a very secure lock - just a minor one (e.g. a small obstacle for the snoopy colleague) that is quick and does not cause flashing the device if it is forgotten.

Any app that can crawl webpages and provide some data in a readable manner on the small N900 screen is appreciated.

i use n900 as my main phone, would like to see(1) flash share app; bluetooth is alot slower to transfer files to an android phone. (2) Imei changer and generator (3) dvb-h and dvb-t on nokia 900 (4) symbian '3 or belle emulator (5) RAM booster and battery optimizer (6) an upgraded mplayer that plays 1080p videos (7) maemo.org application:

Hi,

- a working again Evernote client (Qvernote) and/or sharing plugin.
- a sharing plugin for Yappari (Whatsapp client) to share many pictures or videos at once from gallery instead of looking for each one from Yappari using slow file dialog .
- a working Google Photos sharing pugin or app now that Picasa is being sunset
- some API based app to connect to Synology services like DS Video or DS Photo

Regards,
Rafa.

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

Daily user. N900 serves me well with regard to having stereo speakers a physical keyboard and the facility to compose one's own desktops, i.e. in the way I like it. I'm not very adware of much other telephone specs though. I'm usually abhorred by what I see around me (no good grip, no good desktops). I have my N900's in aluminium/neoprene case which offers reasonable protection and whose belt clip serves as a nice stand. I keep my N900 closeby usually, even hanging from an earphone with neck strap. My favorite apps are modrana, rockbox and cutetube2.

If asked what I'd like besides that

1 (easy) calendar/contacts syncing app
2 improved browser
3 continual of yappari
4 cutetube option download sound
5 mediabox app working
6 dropbox app working

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

I'd like a Number26 application, as this bank is becoming extremely popular in Europe but requires a Android >4.3 or iOS device, since there is no website to track your expenses and everything is done in the official smartphone application. Unfortunately I doubt the code is open.

And maybe Qremotecontrol.

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

working with two n900s.
a general list of my wishes over time

- a way to load airbnb properly
- a working way to sync google calender
- a way to inmediately prioritize incoming phonecalls over anything in the system or / disable the 'red hang up' button and only make 'green accept call' an option when clicking. hanging up could be done by flipping the phone over (the last point is already a system a system functionality)
- dropbox / google drive / mega
- an even faster transitions.ini as found in all the threads
- working truecrypt update on latest powerkernel, which succesfully mounts containers without crashing

- optfs encryption as found in perfect setup, with the needed files or and/or noob version instructions?

added:

- seperate imap sent folders for modest
- a light firefox style browser with ublock able of javacscipt loading

That's only a little bit understated. ;)

Me, I'd love to have a.client of some kind for MythTV.

Could do with an update browser. Firefox base would be my preference but chromium would suffice.

I prefer desktop view on my sites and jave addons to block out the junk, so don't care about a mobile view (or apps).

Was there not a MythTV client for the N900? It's been a while but I thought we had one.

For me the most needed function is a working GUI integration for owncloud (contacts, calendars and files).

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

For me, would be cool:
- Fb messenger integration to be fixed (I know I know the situation, but this phone is my no1 IM device)
- X360 controller support on USB
- reversed BT headset compatibility (now I can use my laptop to listen music from N900 via BT, but I want to listen my laptop's collection on the phone)

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

A port of petittrack(upgrade the QTE to QT4) would be nice, here is source:
http://www.qsl.net/n1vtn/petittrack.html
It helps plan and track amateur radio communication satellite passes as well as computing the doppler frequency shift in real time keep a radio tuned to frequency.

I would also like a better airplane preflight checklist and flight planning app, that is more a tablet thing though.

A nice GUI for VNC server to make it easy to throw my N900 screen to my tablet for stuff like GPS mapping.

Mostly my minor needs and desires are held back by the N900 hardware not having BT-4le, a compass, NFC, and maybe the absence of new Scud batteries, and a modern browser to browse the bloaternet. Damnit I want my Nexus 7 to run Maemo 5 not CyanogenMod, even if that is the best of a terrible Android situation. I used to daydream of AlienDalvik on my N900 that dream ended when I got my first Android device last year. I cling to my N900 now and dream of mainlined Android kernel and probably unified repository Ubuntu.

I find that even with all the supposed choice in Android I am unimpressed with the plethora of web-frame and website-API apps and how they pause when minimized. That and how even Cyanogen hand holds me too much because of the mess securing unrooted droid has made of things, let us not even mention surfaceflinger.

I use N900 every day for Network and SSH-Purposes. No other gadget give me the same feeling. My Jolla with TOHKBD (TOHKBD sold) was not so comfortable for the daily use.... But for a dayly smartphone it is perfect.....
Nokia N900 is not a smartphone at all. Its a small Linux Computer with 3G Modem... And for computer usage - its perfect...

Someone solved this in the Android/iOS world. It's called Tinder. Someone else already RE'd the API, so creating a Maemo client would be quite feasible.

ammyt 2016-03-28 22:04

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

Too bad we abandoned the sex app idea.

We were the founders of the tinder concept yet we coldheartedly ignored it and instead some hotshots released it to iOS/Android.

With all the funding that a maemo-ian tinder could've produced, the Neo900 project could've been remarkably accelerated!

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

We'll just make one exclusive to N900. It'll only show you other people near you with who have an N900. :P

I'm reading through the ideas, keep them coming'
Though I must stress the *small* software bit, not something that'll turn into a large project :P

The last thing I coded (I think, in general) is the Smartcam client I made aaaaaages ago, so I am a little rusty.

But yeah, I'll look after all the ideas more and make a list of something likely to least likely depending on what I can find out about the software/if I think it'll be too confusing/annoying for me.

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

I still use my N900 as a backup handset when my N9 is not available. It has one of the best media players - OpenMediaPlayer (OMP). I also like to use it as a serveilance camera with Watchdog app.

I'm pretty content with what's already available, but the ones available could sure use some updates or perhaps a new one that is up to date. For example, I use Twitter and Facebook frequently, as much as the web browser. While there are apps like Tweetian, and the port of Rocket, it would be nice to have one that has updated features like ability to tag (10) people in a photo. There's also video and GIF upload now. I also love the ability to copy a tweet URL and/or quoting, and viewing conversations. TwimGo and Tweed Suit were my favorites but no longer work for me.

The same with Facebook. Facebook has a lot of new features where the native app on Maemo is incapable. There are some other social networks I'm interested in such Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, Periscope, but there doesn't seem any way to access them besides through the web browser.

Although there's one I think would be really good, and that is an application that lets us broadcast live streams to popular services such as Twitch, YouTube, Ustream, WatchPeopleCode, etc.
Bambuser does this, and I like using that, but it's only for Bambuser site. It would really awesome if it supports custom RTMP server so we can direct it to certain IP addresses/any service we want. Something along lines of OBS, which is what I use on the PC to stream my desktop and video games I play. I plan on using my Nokia devices to live stream while on-the-go. I'd love to see a project like that exist. If you need someone to design icons and pieces of graphics, I'd be obliged to help build it.

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

I don't still use it, I use it, because there is nothing better that I can get to fill like my n900 does.

It would be hard to say what I use, I have half of repository installed, use 75% of it.

n900 is my mp3player, camera, mobile computer, web browser, note takieing machine, video player and what not :)

I use N900 as my main phone now. I have workarounded the browser problem with VNC to my server where i use chromium. Works really nice and fast. Maybe it could be even enahanced somehow - e.g. custom protocol or VNC client so that no traffic is needed for scrolling.

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

This should be easy, a selfi-stick app as in in this thread.
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1502457
Probably just a plugin with depends extkbd to make the bluethooth HID sticks pair properly with the N900.
If just a plugin it would bind the Return key to camera app shutter as c currently does, perhaps also allow bluetooth headsets to fire the camera shutter.

Sorry, I've never coded anything with bluetooth stuff. All I can do "remote"-wise is TCP/UDP stuff. That and I'm a firm believer in selfie sticks should not exist

I concur, but consider this. Throw away the stick and use just the remote. A remotely operated camera could be an excellent tool to snap some birds in action.

Firstly I agree up to the point I realized I have almost no photos of my kids with me in the frame. But really I also want to be able to fire the camera remotely using the btton on the stick. Actually all that is needed is to bind the Return key(the stick's shutter button is a HID bluetooth keyboard Return key) to shutter, as apparently the letter c on the hardware keyboard is now in CSSU.

For taking one picture you could use the console and gstreamer and trigger your script with the enter key. For taking more pictures you could write a simple console application.

Edit: I know you will have no flash so the best would be to recompile the cssu app with enter as trigger.

At a minimum avrdude to upload pre-compiled code to AVR/Arduino stuff via USB/serial/bluetooth.
the Arduino IDE would be nice to edit in the field, but I think that might require chroot debian with all of the java, my debian install works but updating is tricky with the old kernel and debian repos.
I tried ArduinoDroid on my Cyanogen Nexus7 but it crashes on load and is so damn fragile.

Re: Anyone still using N900: What apps do you need/want?

Alternating N900 & Nexus 5 32GB w SfOS 2.0.1.7 ... would need an updated/lighter/modern browser, BOX client, GUIed Telegram, Protonmail client and Maps.me.

Anyway the "phone" in N900 has always been the least important part to me.
