Sailfish OS on Fairphone 2

We have a general thread for the discussion of Fairphone (the company), but no thread for discussing the port of Sailfish OS for Fairphone 2 specifically.

Hopefully this can be it :)

The Fairphone 2 is one of the best supported devices for SFOS, and due to its modular construction the hardware should have a long life.

I ordered mine at the end of Feb but haven't got it yet. If you have yours, hype me up ;)

Wait... I thought they licensed SFOS, so that would have meant Alien Dalvik too, no? Really curious about this.

I always forget that people rely on this, I've never used aliendalvik.

Hoping that the excellent work that has been done on sfdroid will make it to the other ports, at which point I'll start using it. The UI is already tied to the success of Jolla as a company, I don't want to rely on any more proprietary components that can't be maintained by the community of Jolla goes under.

I think it was just under discussion... I've been looking for news about this but haven't heard any.

They just announced cooperation with Jolla and more or less confirmed that Alien Dalvik will come to Fairphone, soon™.

Sfdroid experiments are under way, otherwise Sailfish works quite brilliantly on FP2.

As I have understood it, licensees of Sailfish OS get Alien Dalvik

This Fairphone port is community supported, not official. Strange given the alignment (at least in marketing terms) of both companies that this has not yet resulted in a spontaneous wedding.

I hope Jolla could focus on official Fairphone support soon after the Intex launch.

The problem is that for example, banking apps are only available on the 2 biggest platforms (Android, iOS)
So I don't have a choice :(

I've personally asked them if it will support dalvik, they replied that it's not coming since it's not an official port, but rather a community port, just like the Nexus one...

Would this actually work on the Jolla phone itself?

If someone is willing to port Android to it, then yes, or you could revive the emulator project krnlyng/liar tried before this, and get that working.

When did you ask them? Before or after the announced partnership?

Yeah, that's annoying. You can always use a web browser though, or does your bank's app have features that aren't available online?

I've tried using any of the Sailfish browsers for banking.. It's still a pain in the *ss :(

With the app, you just open it up, enter the 5 digit code and you're in...

They're more things that the sfos browser can't handle like searching this thread. At some moments you'll end up using an Android browser.

Thank you for this. I swear most people don't do much on these devices other than tinker.

I quite regularly do online banking in Sailfish Browser. It works fine for me, no need for tainting my phone with Android.

Just because people are doing different things to you, doesn't mean they aren't doing anything of value :p

My bank's website works fine for me. Not as convenient as an app, sure, but good enough for occasional use. I can see why you would want the app if you use it all the time.

how do sensors work in FP2 ?
Better then on the nexus5?
And powerconsumption: better then android?

Thanks, that's all I needed to know. My next phone will be a Sailfish Fairphone 2. The question is, can I buy one now, and flash it with commercial Sailfish when it's ready, or will I have to wait? I don't want to get stranded on a community port, but I don't mind paying a little extra for a Sailfish license when the time comes.

I've asked them on twitter, but no response so far

If you have a Jolla can't you transfer the relevant RPMs? Obviously that's not ideal (or strictly legal?), but better than nothing - i don't think you'd be completely stuck without the commerical bits on a community port.

Dalvik is dependent on the kernel version, which I'm hoping is a lot newer on the fairphone than the jolla. I'm sure there are plenty of other potential problems too, especially with upgrades. I think I'd rather wait for the official support without some sort of guarantee that I'll be able to switch without any of those shenanigans.

I don't think that this is a limitation of Alien Dalvik itself, but rather an outcome of having only binaries.

IIRC, part of Alien Dalvik on SailfishOS is a kernel module - if we had the sources, we could build it for newer kernel versions or use something like DKMS, but as we only have the binary, we are limited to one kernel version.

On top of that, I've read somewhere (if I remember it right) that porting Alien Dalvik is comparable to porting SailfishOS itself, as they are many device-specific problems (like sensors), so that's another limitation of having it only in binary form, not just the kernel version limitation.

That doesn't sound accurate to me. Alien Dalvik maybe, but definitely not Dalvik.

and we have Chinese Flash files for the Tablet. Maybe is it possible to extract from them?

The flash files will be the binaries, not the source.

Well yes, but that's what we're talking about transferring over. I don't know if it's simply a matter of recompilation either, as I've heard it mentioned as a reason why the Alien Dalvik on the Jolla phone can't be upgraded to the 4.4 version found on the tablet. Also there's no migration code so they couldn't upgrade existing Alien Dalvik installations, but the kernel version problem would be a showstopper. I have no idea what the dependency entails, but as Google freely patch the Linux kernel as they see fit, I wouldn't be surprised if 4.4 had a minimum kernel version.

So I'm pretty sure I'll wait :)
