XFCE :-)

What is in the tarball

x11vnc when starting vnc server (password is rootme)
REALVNC is also installed, both client and server, server works, but hangs when disconnected and cursor does not showwhen using xrdp. I compiled x11vnc which works good, you can use vncpasswd (realvnc) can be used to set vnc server password.

xrdp (Allows you to connect to n800 with MS Terminal services client using x11vnc)

Sylpheed email (works great, but menu setup is difficult) Note look for username and password, (under send/receive server in setup) it hides under the XFCE menu panel, you need to move it around to access the username and password when setting up new account)

More Software
Gaim, gftp, mousepad editor, epdf, gpmgep (mp3 player), gqview (image viewer, fullscreen slideshow)

Links I started playing with the mime for links, this version plays avi/mpeg after downloading with mplayer. Shoutcast.com links start in mplayer also go to shoutcast.com in links

Command line
+ su tar bzip2 grep ping telnet ftp nmap hdparm mpg123 aterm xterm

eyecandy
+ xdaliclock (Fullscreen Clock), xdesktopwaves, xpenguins, explosions, xlock

DOCKAPPS
wmSMPmon, wmcpuload, wmmemfree, wmnd, wmnetload, wmupmon, wmagnify, wmfsm, wmmemmon, wmnet(not working inside wmdock), wmpiki, wmwifi, wmcdclock, wmifinfo, wmmon, wmsm, cputnik, asmem, Mixer, asmixer
(Not all dockapps are working, start up a dockapp and it will automagically be pulled into the xfce-wmdock holder. use the -bw or -w if available)

FYI - I think the theme issue is resolved, it should work with any hildon theme, let me know?

Known Issues:
Submenus are not working on panel, submenus for hildon apps only seem to work when app is in fullscreen, some have more issues than others.

Menu's that are taller than the screen will not open at all, there are several menus as of right now :-)

Not all menu entries have icons

Enter key not working for minimo, hildon keyboard is available from the menu

xfce4-appfinder stopped working, it used to work? Now it seg faults

Booting from XFCE, While it does boot from XFCE, its not working properly, the trash icon is missing from desktop if boot from XFCE, and audio devices are not working.

This is setup on a n800 with , 770 users please report"

Additional Reccomended Changes

Disable metalayer-crawler (It always causes me problems using lots of CPU)
Delete /etc/rc2.d/S99metalayer-crawler0
to re-enable
ln -s /etc/init.d/S99metalayer-crawler0 /etc/rc2.d/S99metalayer-crawler0

Update the allowed pty's
edit /etc/init.d/af-services

Change
echo 4 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max
to
echo 24 > /proc/sys/kernel/pty/max

You need a pty for each terminal session you want to open, ssh or xterm. This will fix the problem that you can not open more than a couple of term sessions then it will give some error, like no pty's available. I did not want to include the file, was not sure it was the same on 770/800

Re: XFCE Available

Don't exactly quote me on this, but from understanding it searches your filesystems for media files

# Description: Metalayer Crawler part of the Mediaplayer suite.

I can still play media files inside osso-mediaplayer, so to me, its not needed. When it starts searching all the files it pegs at 100% and will often cause un-explained reboots. In Microsoft terms, that would be a feature :-)

Well, it's neat and certainly a change but it's by no means a replacement.

penguinbait 2007-09-14 01:12

Re: XFCE Available

Well this, nor window maker, openbox, or kde, was meant to replace hildon, the intent is to show that these are viable alternatives to the matchbox prison. My hope was always to spark interest in the community and nokia. Are any of my ports commercial grade, tested by lots of people, nope! I test and pass along, i miss things, idont know how to fix everything. But, look what a hack can do, part time, in two weeks, What could Nokia do with some real direction.

Re: XFCE Available

Is threre a good way to exit the XFCE to Hildon? Every time I log out from XFCE, the screen keeps showing the XFCE background image. No hildon menus are shown. The only way seem to be to press the power button and then the power button menu pops up to top left corner. Not whole menu can be seen but enough to select the Turn Off mode. After the restart normal Hildon desktop is restored.

Also, I noticed that my battery was drained overnight... Does XFCE leave something running so that the N800 can not enter into sleep mode?

in the control panel menus, select "Switch to Hildon"

Now... I have some serious problem. I tried to load XFCE this morning and all it show was just white screen. I restarted and tried next time XFCE@BOOT, and now my N800 is in constant reboot loop. (After original OS loads the blue bar stops at full, waits about a minute and then restarts.) How can I solve this without reflashing my OS?

Well, do you have ssh, if so, you have about 10 seconds to fix this.

NOTE NOTE NOTE, if it does not work when switching via menu, dont try to boot from it????

If you have ssh installed, you will need to ssh in when its booting, you only have about 10 seconds

as soon as you log in, run

su - user
nwm.sh

Sometimes this takes me 5-10 trys but I can always get in if ssh is installed. If you do not have ssh installed, I think its a reflash. Also setting the no-lifegaurdreset, may give you a some extra time to get in,but with no ssh, your hosed.

nwm.sh
This will remove the XFCE boot scripts, and return to hildon

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My first question? Did you install to MMC1 prior to my fix? If so, Have you updated your mount1.sh. Once you get booted back up, as user run mount1.sh, does it mount user local? Also make sure you updated the mount1.sh script before running it. If the mount is good, run ldconfig, and it should be fixed. you should be able to start it and stop it without issues.
If mmc1 is not the issue, please let me know...
NOTE this happened to me, thats how I found the script problem with mmc1 and the mount script. Luckily I was not bootinf from it, but I have been there before.
Nope... do not have SSH in it. So I guess it is time to reflash?
I tried to remove the memory card and boot to see if it would boot to Hildon, but no. (Assumption was that if it can not mount the disk image... it would not try to boot XFCE...) Maybe that is one future improvement idea to put a script to check if the image is available. If it isn't, the normal Hildon boot would be executed? Is that possible?
I installed the XFCE to MMC2 (internal card).
Re: XFCE Available
A replacement it certainly isn't. However, I've found that it is excellent for X11 forwarding! I get full Firefox, Evolution, even OpenOffice on my n800 while sitting in the living room at the speed of my desktop.
Hildon would handle the X11 fowarding, but very poorly. XFCE (Openbox and even KDE, for that matter) handles it smoothly. Highly recommended for those of you with Linux desktops.
Can't thank you enough PB!
Anyone using XFCE and wanting to print pdf files
http://penguinbait.com/epdfview.gz
this is a single executable to replace the file in /usr/local/bin
this will add the printing option in epdfview
gunzip epdfview.gz
rm /usr/local/bin/epdfview
mv epdfview /usr/local/bin
Sorry if this seems like spamming, just want to make sure all relevant threads get updated with the info...
Just a guess since I haven't tried xfce on the tablet: how about changing the value of 'gtk-menu-popup-delay ' in ~/.gtkrc-2.0
