Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
not sure why you are getting the message, which is given by /usr/sbin/gainroot (which is a shell script you can edit), but you should do your reboot before your first exit in the script, because "user" cannot execute the reboot command.

Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
afdo - install the "becomeroot" package or enable R&D mode using the Linux flasher. Search the forum for "becomeroot" and you should find the information you need to install the package.

I searched these forum's on how to do this. My way of sucess was to install dropbear server and client, and it allows one to ssh to the N800 as root (kind of a security hole there, so best to change the root password afterwards), and then you can edit the gainroot script. I hope this helps, Craig... |
Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
Craig, no offence but that's not a smart solution so I guess you couldn't have searched very hard. Just install becomeroot (repository: http://eko.one.pl/maemo bora user) or enable R&D mode...

Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
I would like to connect the device to the internet via USB. This would be the first time the decive ever connects to the internet. So Without installing this package there should be a way to become root.
However perhaps there would be a deb file that could accomidate this problem ? |
Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
Since I had openssh installed I simply did
ssh root@127.0.0.1to log in as root. Not as good as sudo but requires no internet connection. |
Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
"rootsh" package needs to be installed in N900.

Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
Install rootsh package & type sudo gainroot in X-terminal .. to get the root status.

But yeah.. you need to install Rootsh first. You'll find it in App Manager. |
Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
Hi, Thks
But when I download rootsh the phone show me the same message "Not enough space in application install memory. Uninstall some applications to free enough space for this installation" What can I do, please help |

IIRC rootsh is a very small package so I guess your home partition must be really full if it is giving that message? Do you have conky installed? If so, then you can easily check how much space you have left. |
Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
Hi, MinKin
I uninstall some applications but nothing, I cant yet. What can I do? Thks |
Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
TBH with out any investigation as to what is using all that space, I would not know.
Maybe the size of the files you un-installed were not enough? (I would definitley run a back up before enabling R&D first though (I like making backups) ) I would have to ask you though, what do you hope to achieve by enabling R&D mode? |

rootsh is deprecated and when I run the suggested gainroot I have the error about "root is not a sudoers". How can I fix it? Thanks, |

Re: Enable RD mode if you want to break your device
rootsh is deprecated?!?!?
Probably the one of the most critical things for our devices ..for lack of a better word "pooched"? And without alarums (olde-fash-ioned term) being raised ? I do really seriously doubt that. I'm not sure exactly what make or model of device you are using .. ...nor the kind of commands you are trying to elicit from rootsh... but ... Just to test your statement ... I just now... uninstalled and reinstalled rootsh .. on one of my n800's ...one of my n810's...and one of my n900's... and it still works fine to me... sudo gainroot...bam. soooo...unless you are using a 770...or n9.. or Jolla... or something else I haven't tested yet... then...it ain't rootsh . It's all you man... and uh-oh... you made peter all unsmiley-facey ... oooh and it's red too. More deets from you would help with your problem and peter's unsmiley-smile... :D |
