SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet

Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Since this is the closest to the first post I can get I will update this with the current Situation:
Well working Sailfish OS is available for both LTE and WIFI versions, Install Instructions: Sailfish OS for Xperia Z3 Tablet (LTE) Sailfish OS for Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact (Wifi) With a notable exception of the Cameras, everything else works. |

One can work around sensors especially on a tablet using powermenu 2. Gps and camera has less priority on a tablet for me, bluetooth would be a nice to have in the future. |

I agree sensors and cameras are of lesser importance on a wifi tablet, but there are things that don't have rows on the HADK table that are currently broken. I do miss the screen orientation sensor though. |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Is there a thread or wiki where I can follow the current progress of this port and find builds? I couldn't find a corresponding link in the wiki https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris

builds can be found here: https://nokius.net/SFOS/ I will have to get Nokius to re-add the scorpion_windy build I have |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Just installet the latest image from Nokius. Looks promissing. Will try to use it like daily Nerd-Device

Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
After a busy weekend porting I've built a new port for the Z3 Tablet based upon the AOSP 6.0.1 hybris branch released by Jolla last week as part of the Xperia X stuff.
The situation is already looking much better than before, with working Wifi, sensors (yaay dynamic orientation!), media playback, and cameras (working as well as AOSP, which is badly). It's still a bit rough around the edges and things may not work consistently yet, some videos might not play and some play with no sound. There's a few issues I want to sort out before releasing it to the public, like the lock screen doesn't work properly and it regularly hangs during the boot process for some reason but once Jolla releases 2.1.1.X I'll release an update image for the Wifi version. The 3.10 linux kernel means we might be able to run anbox too which would be nice. Hopefully either Nokius or nh1402 will build a image for the LTE version, the fixes should be mostly the same. |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Just a status update, thanks to the work that Jolla has been doing on the Xperia X we now have working bluetooth on the Sony Z3 Tablet as well. I've tested file transfer with a Jolla C, as well as headset and remote control profiles, thats all the bluetooth devices I have.
I also fixed the lockscreen, and so the only major outstanding bug is the fact that sometimes it takes 6-7 attempts before it succesfully boots. I've got an image for SailfishOS 2.1.2.3, so hopefully Jolla can make this one a full release sometime this week |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Fantastic to hear this. SailfishOS looked great on the Jolla tablet, even better than on phones IMHO. The only problem was apps failing due to memory issues. Better hardware like this Z3 should fix that.
I hope Jolla starts offering commercial support for SailfishOS on this device, like on the Xperia X phone. |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet

I don't think we will see commercial support from Jolla on this though, the base AOSP is not good enough and the hardware is a number of years old now and probably not that easy to buy anymore. In fact its been a few years since Sony has released a tablet at all so maybe they have a new one in the works. |

It would be nice to see a Sony XZ1 Compact tablet. Then I might be tempted to mess about with Sailfish (again) on my Z3c. |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
I havent really been working on it for a little while, but I build a 2.1.3.7 image last night and haven't yet managed to get it to boot.
Now i get the fun of figuring out if i need to do something or it's just the same bug thats been annoying me for a while now where it takes 10+ attempts to get it to boot... |

Is it working well with older builds, maybe we need at least one more sailor to test and reproduce the issue? |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Ok I've made some headway into the boot failure problem and I'm uploading a 2.1.3.7 image for scorpion_windy which i'll edit this post with once its done.
This image may take a few attempts before it boots fully, but I've altered the init script with a LED light sequence so we can tell what its doing. The sequence is: Power on -> Orange LED -> Aqua LED -> Purple LED -> Off -> White LED This should happen in reasonably quick succession and so if it hangs at the Orange or Aqua stages for more than 10 seconds then it is most likely stuck and needs to be turned off by holding VOL UP + POWER until it shuts off. I haven't seen it get stuck at the Purple or White stages, so if you see those it should finish booting ok. To Flash the Image first we need to put on AOSP6 by unpacking the tarball and using fastboot as follows: fastboot –S 256M flash boot boot.img fastboot –S 256M flash system system.img fastboot –S 256M flash userdata userdata.img and then you can flash the SailfishOS .zip as per usual through TWRP. EDIT: Downloads Here |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
I think this thread deserves more attention from our community.
Besides the boot issue the scorpion windy is the best choice for running Sailfishos on a tablet as the Jolla tablet is very rare. Everything seems to work well here. With this build we have working sensors, bluetooth, video playback in browser etc. Many thanks r0kk3rz. |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Thank you for your great work.
@BluesLee Yes, I agree! I already liked the first version. The battery life was great! Unfortunately, I sold my Cellular version, but think again to buy one :) Only I would like to have one with Celluar feature. I have two questions about this: 1) Can the owners of a Cellular version also flash the IMAGE? 2) is the kernel adapted for Anbox? :) |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet

2) Anbox is a possibility, I need to check what it needs on the kernel side |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
How does the Z3 Compact tablet compare to the Jolla tablet w.r.t. memory? I have Jolla tablet and love it, but it struggles with more than a few apps open and some Web pages are too complex for the browser.

Many would look forward to Anbox compatibility :) thanks for your work |

Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Yeah I will talk to Nokius about it, there might be a way for us to use the same build which would make things easier to support.

Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Unfortunately i tried an OTA update from 2.1.3.7 to 2.1.4.14. It looked to work in the beginning but the device does not boot - besides the ugly boot issue we have.
@r0kk3rz: Did something wrong and OTA is supported? Can you provide a new 2.1.4.14 image? p.s. ssh is possible, will try to downgrade if it makes sense at all. |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
I set it up for OTA but I didn't actually try it myself yet, but I do have 2.1.4.14 running from a fresh build just fine.
On the boot issue, I havent fixed it yet but I jave narrowed it down to some kind of cpu power state issue, and realised that it would mostly boot ok from being plugged into the power into act-dead mode. So I turned off act-dead and it just boots normally |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Can you share informations how to deactivate act-dead mode and share your new build? IRC conversation would be fine whenever you are available, until then i will try to rescue via a ssh.

https://build.merproject.org/project...scorpion_windy The act-dead mode stuff is a boot option, so I'll just include it in the next image I think |

Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Thanks to cvp for testing this out, apparently it boots and works about as well as the scorpion_windy version.
Install instructions are the same but the LED pattern has been simplified a bit and you can boot it fully from plugging into a charger. If it hangs on the Aqua LED stage for more than 10 seconds it has stalled and needs resetting. Install instructions AOSP Base Sailfish Image for Scorpion LTE |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Thanks for the first Alpha :)
Here are my test results Work: BT WIFI GPS (CSD fail, but google maps @ Browser works) SSH Light sensor (Backlight dimm) Youtube @Browser Video Play (mp4) Music (mp3) Jolla Store Rotation sensor Sound Headset Back camera (no sharp points yes, bad quality ^^ ) File Transfer via USB cable (MTP) Not Working: Modem (2G/3G/4G) - Phone - Message Compass Proximity sensor Gyro & Accelerometer (rotation work) Camera Video Record (green video) Frontkamera (in CSD ok, but camera app will close, not possible to change back to back camera - need reinstall) Not tested: FM Radio (no App installed) I can not say anything about the battery darin. |
Re: SailfishOS on Sony Z3 Compact Tablet
Hi all.
I just installed the sfos build on a scorpion_windy device, But I have noticed that it hangs when booting with a MicroSD card inserted (The LED will die out after going white), and boots successfully without one. |
