TMO needs Captcha which sends data to google

I am a new user and I have NoScript enabled. Enabling script option for external captcha provider is one thing but enabling script from google dot com for the captcha is sad. :(

Added to all that the image captcha is so previous century. Can't we have decent spam prevention mechanisms?

I am not sure if the community forum is even thinking of upgrades to the forum software but sending google every time a "hello" when I am logged in to post is not in my interest.

I have to add that as a non-logged in user you are kind of forced to login as it needs one more captcha to search for posts. Since I was suggested to create an account to avoid captcha. I was actually surprised to see the captcha again on search page. I was told it was for few first posts. I don't understand the logic controlling search queries on a logged in user

Welcome!
There are lots of strange things happening around here. I have learned to live with it and so can you :D

What do you suggest we do?

First of all, welcome pavi to TMO.. Check this out to learn more about what's going on and perhaps discuss your problem further: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...3&postcount=49

6 posts in order to avoid CAPTCHa, that's not really that bad, although it would be nice to know why this rule is in effect. :)

Probably because of threads like these:

If the Captcha approach succeeds is keeping an undesirable off would it then be considered a Gotcha...

Doesn't seem like it succeeds, every now and then you get a bunch of spam, even with the captcha, is google sending it?

I come from a different world where life is without captchas once you login. 6 posts seriously? Added to all that why do you need captcha for searching ?

What could the logged in Spammers ( who filled the captcha once to create the account and email verified) do with the search option? DDOS the system with search queries?:p

I am new and I shouldn't complain. Seriously I took the pains to create an account can't I at least get to perform search query without filling the damned captcha? It makes a very bad barrier of entry not just for the visitor who quickly wants to find some information but also the logged in user who created the account.

PS: My 2nd post. 4 more captcha's to go. :D

  1. 1. Please replace google recaptcha with something non-google. There are many opensource libraries out there which can provide captcha without relying on google:eek: servers/services. ( we live in post 2013 era )
  2. 2. Please leave the search querying without captchas atleast for the logged in user. Expecting a reader to make 6 posts is just too unfriendly for newbies.
  3. 3. Think of a way to control spam without all this captcha business. There are other platforms which do that successfully. TJC (jolla) for example.

PS: 3rd post, 3 more captchas to go ;)

You are lucky search results aren't being served through email

I think TJC does without captcha because to login you need a jolla account which means you have to have a SFOS device.
There's just not that many spamers who are into jolla :)

It's worth noting that Google's CAPTCHA probably now serves no purpose other than tracking users and data mining. It's useless.

Re: TMO needs Captcha which sends data to google

What is really fascinating is that with all our talk of spam monkeys...
it seems the little vermin have realized that we are trying to exterminate them however we can from tmo...in all our discussions on the topic...
they have subsequently upped their game and are now poo flinging !
I think war has been declared on us actually....
In fact quite a taunt....

I found a new spam thread which had been tagged with " spam--- vs. tmo "
http://talk.maemo.org/tags.php?tag=spam---+vs.+tmo

brazen I must say...

Whether this is simply a rogue monkey or is part of a larger spam monkey poo-flinging armed movement...
I am not sure...
But there are quite a few spam posts today...
which makes me wonder...

Where is the electrical feedback when you need it?
I don't mind the smell of burnt monkey fur....

I also just noted that the other spam today was also tagged with " spam--- vs. tmo "

I am curious as to who exactly is doing this...
and their reasoning ...
if a legit member found a spam post...they would report it..
not "tag" it....

interesting..

Re: TMO needs Captcha which sends data to google

Sorry endsormeans, but I had to remove that post. I saw the tag. But I don't think it was done by that person. If it were, then I agree. Brazen. But in the end, can't keep that trash here.

In the last days i was reporting various spam on TMO.
Always it comes from new member with one message.
It seems that they found a way to pass the captcha

Yeah, that's their modus operandi. Some badly spelled username and zero posts... I see that and I start the waiting game. I know it's going to be some ********.

Exactly. When you have a lot of posts in the database the single search query makes some load on the system. Multiply it by hundreds of spambots doing dozens of search requests per second and your forum is dead.

Back in 2008 I was fighting with multitudes of spambots registering on my forum evading the captcha. Then with the little help of the almighty google I found out that the text question (e.g. "Write the name of this website: ") is much better than the picture captcha.
After adding it I could confirm that it really is.

There are numerous services allowing you to bypass the captcha with the help of Russian or Indian students, e.g. http://antigate.com/

reCaptcha has been replaced with questions. You cannot simply replace a service like akismet. I will consider turning akismet off again if someone comes up with a better solution.

I understand that akismet filtering is used for the few first postings of a new account, right?
Do you have any data how much spam does it catch, as some stuff still gets through the filtering as spammy first posts?

It should block creation of threads with links in it now. So not even moderation, just prevent posting at all. If the moderation part is tuned too much I get like everything posted to queue. It is like 1 out of 5 is actually spam. So I turned it off.

It doesn't block spam.

They pass yahoo, wordpress, google and microsoft, don't you think they manage to pass our measures just as well?! Akismet is wordpress btw, so if they pass wordpress and google they pass everything else just as likely. And there is probably a bug in the link detection of akismet or the forums bbcode parsing, as both are set to prevent posting of links for new users. I am out of ideas btw.

gerbick 2016-11-03 15:49

Re: TMO needs Captcha which sends data to google

Why can't we have a system in place that disallows, even on edit, links in the initial 5-10 posts?

There are plenty of ideas I'm sure we could all come up with, but what's all been tried?

And I'm familiar with Akismet. Use it on my WP blog.
