Gpd win
My unit arrived today and I haven't messed with it too much yet. I'm gonna do a clean install tonight and then mess with it some more in the morning :D ;)
Specifications Intel Atom x7-z8700 Windows 10 64 GB ROM 4GB RAM Fan (Off, Slow, On) Gorilla Glass 3 1280 x 720 Resolution Mono Speaker Bluetooth Physical keyboard Embedded Xbox 360 Controller 6700mah Lithium ion battery Ports USB-C Mini HDMI USB 3.0 MicroSD support up to 256GB 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Here's another size comparison ;) Size Comparison between GPD WIN and Nokia N810 I am going to try installing Arch Linux tomorrow because a user on reddit by the name of "Azelphur" worked around a few bugs and got the wifi working and the rotation crash fixed. :) I will post a full review in a couple weeks. For now, I am willing to answer any questions you might have. :D |
Re: Gpd win
It would be interesting to see the battery life of GPD.

Re: Gpd win
This could be a nice Linux mini-PC, but somewhat pricey. Is the sound chip working (often an issue with Atom-based SoCs)?

Seems like someone doesn't know about the Pyra... |
Re: Gpd win
Wow. Looks amazing. Would be interested if they removed the gaming style. remove the gaming pad an add a huge touchpad :D
Can it make calls? |

This aims to be a portable gaming console, that is why it has gaming controls. At a certain point i was thinking of building a similar device with an Intel Compute Stick, a 5 inch lcd and a bluetooth keyboard. |

I am personally tired of that phrase. |

I did it from my Google Voice/Hangouts, but make sure you are wearing headphones as the microphone is close to the speaker, otherwise it'll echo like crazy. Quote:
The sound chip does not work under Arch or Xubuntu, unfortunately. Hopefully there will be a breakthrough soon. This reply was typed on my GPD WIN :) It does take some getting used to, but it isn't bad at all. ;) |

GPD is like a reborn UMPC, something i did not expected to see in 2016. I don't know the production capabilities of GPD, but i think they have only one production line for the GPD win. They should focus more on this project because the demand is high. |

But Linux actually does recognize the controller. |

I am looking forward to see an unbiased comparison between both running a Linux distro. BTW. they have designed the Pyra to be CPU upgradable so it might be possible to get an x86 on the Pyra as well. |

It's 2016, nearly 2017 and yet we're nowhere closer to where we'd rather be. It's almost like the oft-repeated, never actualized mantra of "Year of the Linux Desktop" - and here we've more than likely moved past desktops now to more mobile solutions. I get the faith, the trust and even the merit behind your decisions. But I am no longer to be counted in that group of the faithful or patient. In my estimation, I've been waiting since the mid-90's to now for something to become what I'd fully support and would fully support the needs and wants of my ideals around computing. x86 or ARM; I don't really care. Just be real. This has my attention though; I can admit that. |

Outstanding !-
You said you were installing Arch: Are all these observations are all made regarding performance under Arch ? Quote:
Thank you for your report. If you accepted LTC I would send you a couple for an in-depth... |

My GPDWin Also arrived yesterday.
Build quality is pretty nice if you ask me |

Re: Gpd win
I'm wondering are they going to have a Core-M version instead of Atom chipset. Or is it user upgradable to Core-M?
Atom chipset is quite useless in my opinion, even with light tasks. Never had any good experience in the past... |
Re: Gpd win
Please, where did you guys get it from ? I`ve tried to order it from the GPD`s store at Aliexpress and they said me that is out of stock. Thank you.

I haven't got much time to play with it yet, since I'm doing updating the OS and patching things I don't like on the OS :p Quote:
You could buy it from www.geekbuying.com they are one of the official distributors for the GPDWin. Edit: Seems like Geekbuying is also out of stock, but it'll be in stock soon. They also give you a free case at the moment for pre-orders: http://promotion.geekbuying.com/promotion/gpd_win |

Yeah too many in queue+ships in 20 days :D too long... Please get back with a note if you are getting the browser up and running, eventually, maybe. It will be a nice edition to your collection of gameable devices :D |

@saponga I got mine from DragonBox. There's also Amazon, DinoDirect, GearBest, etc.. Quote:
I will still be doing that soon.. i'm just enjoying it the way it is right now before I do that. :D The things I have said about linux on this device is from another person's experience on it, not my own. Here is a video of Xubuntu running on the system. Xubuntu 5Ghz Wifi Works and Steam Quote:
The screen might be generic as well, because it defaults to a portrait orientation when you first set it up. People have speculated that they were used on smartphones. Definitely not bad quality though. Watch these to get an idea to get an idea about it's components. Heatsink Mod Part 1 Heatsink Mod Part 2 Note: His is different from mine in terms of cpu (z8750) and his heatsink has fins where mine does not. |

I'm talking about the instruction set of the CPU. If you want to do something more advanced like programming microcontrollers, you'll face challenges if you try to run a specific program on the ARM instruction set, since most programs for that are made for x86. Yes, you can run x86 apps on ARM if you emulate them (https://eltechs.com/product/exagear-desktop/) but again you'll face all kind of strange errors when trying to do something specific. |

The sensor connects to the pc only via USB and came with a software called "CalexConfig" which is not programmed for ARM architecture. Now i have a small pc based on raspberry pi, so i have to rewrite the entire software and drivers to be able to communicate with the sensor. But i don't want to reinvent the wheel, i just needed some portable computer that could just work. I ended up buying another sensor (analog) and connected it to a CAN and then to the portable raspberry pc. But this is another story. My point is that if you have some specific commercial equipment, and have a small portable pc with an ARM cpu, you simply don't have the possibilities that you have with the x86, since most of the softwares available for that is designed for x86 architecture. |

GPD announced new device - GPD Pocket 💻 UMPC / OS Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or Windows 10
http://www.gpd.hk/news.asp?id=1520&selectclassid=002001 its kicking in soon February 15, Indiegogo price $399 so chip in... ;) |
Re: Gpd win
Tempting. Where can I part with my money? They mention Indiegogo four times on that page but not a single link. Search on IGG yields only the old GPD Win campaign.
|
Re: Gpd win
The Indiegogo campaign has yet to launch. I'm curious about this one as well. No touch screen does hamper my interest slightly though.

I saw the bit about the Linux engineers but missed the bit about the fashionable women.
IMO if they target their pitch at fashionable women then they have lost already. This is not a device for that target audience. Apple products are. |
