New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
I have recently seen great news from the QT world, QTopia is open sourced!!!
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS5429713730.html http://trolltech.com/company/newsroo...-17.9260755578 So I was wondering how much time we should wait until QTopia will run on our much appreciated Internet Tablets! You may be asking your self why we need QTopia on the Nokias N___ IT, well, I was a proud user of a Sharp Zaurus before acquiring my Nokia, and although Nokia has done a wonderful job with Maemo, I miss some functionality and apps from the QTopia ecosystem. There are thousand of old-QTopia applications that could be easily ported to the new, speedy, beautiful, easy-to-code version!!! If I can finally get it running in my Nokia I will say bye bye to carry my laptop every day :) It was a really nice movement from trolltech and I hope we can also see it running in the old Sharp Zaurus, many people will be really satisfied to hear this news :) |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
Ditto. Loved my Sharp Zaurus. Had the 860, still use it for some things, and it was the ease of wifi connection that drove my discovery of the N800 (which, as I've seen on other posts and will verify) wasn't particularly well advertised and was a surprise to me. After the Zaurus I wanted another Linux-based device. Have owned the N800 for only six weeks, love its functionality as a media-consumption device, but have also added as much Maemo software as I've been able. Love the 800. Will love it even more as software offerings mature.

Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
I still have to carry my C-1000 with all times on account of the information contained in those oh so useful apps. The dearth of oh so useful apps is a big bugbear with the N800.
So this is great news indeed if it makes it easier for Zaurus software to be ported over. |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
Hi, is there any skilled developper who wants to try to get QTopia in the Nokia IT? :)

Ugh. I finally find a Linux UI that I like, and people want to get rid of it!? :-(
Though, having the apps ported would be nice. |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
HI,
Qtopia and qtjambi: Is that the answere for Java-developers, who want to develop for the N800 I like maemo, but I 'm really disapointed, how long it takes, to bring java to maemo Moin flens |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
I agree, someone please make this possible!

that way maybe someone will make something like them, as they can see the use of it for themselves. but being vague about it helps no-one. its always a bit annoying when people talk about some feature or other that they miss, but never list what that is. or that say that they need app X to do their stuff, but never list exactly what it is that app X does that they need. |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
qt/qtopia v2 and v1 have been GPL for a long time, there's been nothing to stop you porting them to the N800. You could even use x/qt and get qt/qtopia apps AND x11 apps to run at the same time.
the news here is that qt core 4 (what would previously have been qt-embedded) and qt phone edition have been GPLd, which means much better source compatibility with linux desktop apps plus access to some interesting new applications previously only available to commercial buyers of trolltech's SDK. |

Portabase http://portabase.sourceforge.net/ has already been mentioned in the forums StageOne (search Handango) http://www.handango.com/ Zaurus Unit Converter (search Handango) TheKompany http://www.thekompany.com/embedded/ tkcExpense; tkcCard; tkcShopper; tkcToDo; tkcExplorer; tkcMail; Textmaker http://www.softmaker.com/english/ofl_en.htm TuxCards http://www.tuxcards.de/screenshoots.html I am sure some of the other Zaurus owners here would be able to add to the list if it was felt to be useful. Of course certain apps for the N800 such as UKMP, Quiver, both Browsers, are superior to any comparable Zaurus equivalent. |

At one point I had contacted Softmaker to see if there was enough interest in porting Textmaker to the N800 and they didn't hesitate to spit out an email with a big "NO". It's too bad. I would be very happy to pay 49 bucks for that program (what I paid for the zaurus version). It was quite full-featured. R. == |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
I conctacted the author of StageOne but he is too busy to contemplate another project.
tkc did port an app for the N770 but found the exercise to be more trouble than it was worth. Also they do not see much of a future for the N800. |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
wellenreiter is a nice wifi sniffer that's opie & qt based, I miss that now I'm running GPE (Angstrom on Zaurus).
netfront is a nice light-weight web browser. there have been quite a few nice qt based games too. |

two programs indespensible: the PIM suite kdepimpi (also known as KO/PI) and the password manager zsafe. KDEPIMPI builds with Qt, while zsafe requires Qtopia. I have already built Qt 4.3.3 within Scratchbox, and have begun to start looking a recompiling kdepimpi and zsafe. This process makes me very aware that I am not a very good software developer...while I it is just possible that I will be able to get the programs to recompile, I strongly doubt that I'll ever get to truely porting them to use the Hildon environment. I'd be extremely grateful for any help or suggestions that you can offer about porting Qt/Qtopia apps to the Nokia. Thanks! |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
once the hard work has been done to make qtopia run in a hildonised wrapper, it should be relatively straight-forward to port an application from qt-embedded-2.3.2/qtopia-1.5 IF you have the source code so can rebuild - the hard part is doing the "hildonisation" of qtopia (at least, not having tried either, that's my guess)!

Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
As a Zaurus user now using the N810 - I do miss the KDE PIM suite opn the Zaurus - Kopi /Kapi in particular. The GPE PIM suite is far sub-standard compared to KoPi (Calendar) and Kapi (Contacts).
Another useful app to have is the password manager (Pwm/Pi). I am suing the password safe for the OS2008, and while that is good, is not as easy and useful as the Zaurus equivanlent. Of the closed source apps from the Zaurus world, - I will certainly back (and buy) the Textmaker and the spreadsheet (hancomsheet) equivalent if they do develop one for the Nokia IT also. The TKC apps were also pretty - some of them useful too - like tkcFTP for me. Another thing I miss is a good RSS reader for the Nokia. While the inbuilt one is not too featured, I guiess I can wait for Canola to maybe fill in the gap in this regards. But Corsair from the Zaurus world was a good RSS app - with podcast support too. In the media world - photo viewer and Audip player - the Nokia softwares excel - like Kagu, the image viewer, Quiver and of course waiting for Canola. I wouldnt want to replace the N810 browser with Netfront though. While Netfront was good for its time, there hasnt been much changes to it since then. The Nokia inbuilt browser is certainly far better. As a last request - the TreeExplorerQT on the Zaurus was a very advanced File manager - which would be good to have on the Nokia also. So much for the Zaurus to Nokia requests from me. |

It is good to see so many Zaurus users here. Maybe we can get a collective momentum going, there really is a wealth of Zaurus apps available which would be very suited to the N8*0. This thread is running in tandem with http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...762#post109762 and I am starting to get a bit dizzy |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
Yes, I was quite pleaseantly suprised myself whan I saw you Rebski, Lardman, Richk, fpp, and then speculatrix on these forums. How can I forget these screen names from the Zaurus forums - you guys were one heck of a gang out there and thanks for all the help from you all
Nice to 'see' familiar faces again, and nice to get to know the 'Nokia IT' guys here - I hope we can all share a wealth of information and apps between these 2 great handheld platforms. |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
BTW - if you guys have a suggestion for something fun to do with a C760 that's gathering dust, I'm all ears ! :-)

* run tomtom on it (need angstrom) * attach a large wireless NAS and use it as a media player * get a data logger interface and log your engine management unit data or get one of these cameras and use the zaurus to control it: http://www.32bitimages.com/?p=19 |

Second thing, I found a front-end shoutcast client for the Zaurus on a Japanese site, it's written in ruby. Seems too work fairly good, but some of the buttons and messages are in japanese. It's fairly straight forward though to cut-n-paste them into google translations, to get a rough translation going though. |
Re: New Open Sourced Qtopia on Nokia Internet Tablets?
I too used the shoutcast client on zaurus, was quite useable, was translated to English by someone (forget the name, hermasoft?), but it was a bit ugly.
You could also use an old zaurus as a TCP to serial console driver. Set up a streaming audio server and use it as part of an alarm system? Install an x11 distro or one with vnc server, plug zaurus into your hifi, remotely run xmms and then can use it as an internet radio? |
