Camera phone competition February 2017: Sunlight

Greetings. Today in the US we celebrate Groundhog Day -- a tradition not unrelated to Candlemas -- the when a large rodent predicts whether Spring will come in 6 weeks or if we still have to wait out another month and a half of Winter. ;) In some traditional calendars, this would be the beginning of Spring or Autumn, rather than the midpoint of Summer or Winter.

All this gets me thinking about the sun. Perhaps yours is just starting to show itself more (or less) frequently now. Perhaps it's just appeared (or finally disappeared briefly) for the first time in a while. By the end of the month, the equinox is less than 4 weeks away, so hopefully everybody will see at least a little in this short month.

So let's go outside and take a photo including sunlight somehow. Sunrise, sunset, sun reflecting off of something or even casting a shadow. Can't get out, then maybe find a cat sleeping in a sunbeam. Go all lens-flarely like JJ Abrams, maybe? Be creative, it's all about fun.

Same rules (copy-pasta from before):

Photos must be taken during this month (after theme is announced?)
Photos must be taken by the posting member
Photos must be taken with a camera phone
Users post only one photo per entry
Users can change the entry only once
Users must name the phone they used (software would be nice too?)

Last three days of this month are for voting. Have fun and enjoy.

Well... There is no Sunlight here... ;)

I like this theme very much! Thanks. I'll try my best... or second...

The sun finally showed itself two days ago and now the snow is melted almost completely. It's not as cold as it was before so that's awesome for me. :D

I just came back from a week long business trip. Wanted to post a picture taken from the hotel room window of a gloomy industrial landscape with the brown sea and grey sky without any sunlight at the background. Then I looked up from writing my report of the trip and noticed this cheerful light pattern on the office floor. The effect lasted all of about 5 minutes.

Taken today, Friday 17 Feb 2017, with Jolla 1.

Good that Rob gave a little freedom to theme. Here, in the middle of the forest, there is no possibility to take beautiful pictures of the sunset or sunrise...

I wanted picture somehow represent the contrast between life's ugliness and beauty, with the sun. I chose the object by chance, and I think the drops that reflecting the sun crowned it...

Taken with N9 and little cropping...

Too bad I don't have much chance to see "sunlight" in this part of the world. (London, UK). This topic is unfair for most of British :P

Re: Camera phone competition February 2017: Sunlight

Quite right, Chen. My business trip was also just to another part of the UK. Still, if you look hard enough you might spot some sunlight, if only just for a few minutes ;)

Ever wondered how clouds are made?
They are all done in my Backyard!
Well, it's not a cloud computing serverfarm but four coal plants doing power for 1/5 of the country.
The hole they dig is quite impressive, the hills on the right hand are what they pull out, minus the coal.

Camera was Nexus5 with SFOS 2.0.5.6

I love the layers of clouds -- or, um, energy byproduct vapor -- in that photo and the light and darkness inn them. Who doesn't like saying, "chiaroscuro"?

And what's growing all nice and green in the foreground? Winter wheat?

ed. . I even see corpuscular ("corpsuckyouler" and I said in my youth) rays and lens flare in the big(ger than my screen) version!

Yes, winter wheat. Apart from shitty air quality, green is the thing that we have loads of here.

Sunlight filtered through faux stained glass.

OnePlus X running Sailfish OS, stock Sailfish camera.

Does it have a backstory? Why, yes, thanks for asking . . .

The decorative window hanging was created by my wife from an old window sash, self-adhesive plastic strips of "lead" and translucent enamel. The design is adapted from the leaded glass windows in the living room of our previous home, a 1920 Craftsman-style bungalow. The colors are from her imagination -- the originals are clear glass.

I like the way it adds color to the room, particularly in the brownish-grey of wintertime. The colorful stylized flowers make a nice contrast to the dreary landscape behind it, cheering me up a little when the winter sun shows itself.

Wow. Just wow. A shame that thing doesn't have its own theme song like its little brother (sister?)

Coincidentally, there's a similar artifact not far from here! In a now-exhausted strip mine rests Big Brutus, now the largest existing electric shovel in the world (the larger ones having been scrapped years ago). Although physically different and much smaller than that bucket-wheel monster of yours, it's still pretty big and served the same purpose: overburden removal from a surface coal mine. It was assembled in place, and was deemed economically impractical to move or to tear down and scrap after it finished its work in the mid 70s. It's now a museum and tourist attraction -- just one reason we're #46 in tourism in the 50 US states plus DC. Take that Nebraska!

Ok, I put the link in both as an img and a url, I think that was the change I made -- for me it looked better. Hope this works everywhere now.

Actually, Bagger 288 now resides just around the corner in Garzweiler, even closer to me :D
Nice Nice, i loled my a** off, Thanks i did not know the song. Only that bagger 288 was featured in hunger games and ghost rider.
Those things are moveable! I still remember the day when one of them had to cross the Autobahn 4 some years ago.
But the glorious days for coal are over. 2 villages that are already ghost towns will not be digged off due to quite remarkable renewable energy availablity recently.

Re: Camera phone competition February 2017: Sunlight

Again, first some light scrutiny and critisism on each entry :)

#1. pichlo, Jolla 1, "Pattern on the office floor"
Very good stripe patterning on the carpet, the carpet texture is well defined by the slanting light towards the camera. Strong leading lines and good massing with the slanting wooden windowframe creating an effective transition. The bluish hue outside the windows looks nice too. Overall tone of the picture is very pleasant. Too bad the picture size is so small, detail is lost.
#2. catbus, N9, "Dropping Sun"
Really well caught moment with the droplets, could not have nailed it better. Fits the title since drops do contain a bit of sunlight, too. focus is not on tack on the subjects, or else there is just a tad motion blur, cannot decide which. Anyway clear drops are really difficult subject to execute well, having better bokeh on the background would help to make the subjets out. Good foreground/background balance.
#3. juiceme, Jolla sbj-1, "Walking on the ice"
Came out pretty much like I wanted, even the horizon is fairly level (it was pretty difficult shot since weather was quite bright and using Jolla screen as viewfinder is fairly taxing endevour!) The greenish lens reflection in lower right is a pain oin otherwice well washed out exposure but cannot really be helped with considering the limits of optics.
#4. saponga, Asus Zenfone 2, "In movement, while driving"
Good rainbow capture, very impressive massing. Composition of the arc really good when the situation of the capture is taken into account. Good and interesting detail, cityscape well defined against the stormy backdrop.
#5. tzsm98, Lumia 950 DS, "Winter Curtain"
Moody and enticing subject, there is more of a hint of sunlight than actual light. Some detail of the subject is lost due to too small pictuer size, and maybe because of grain due to underexposure.
#6. mosen, Nexus5/SFOS, "How clouds are made"
Foreground is a bit dark even though the clouds show the sunlight. Nice way how the vapour from the plant exhaust mixes with clouds. Good depth and decent leading lines in the field. I'd like to some fore/middle ground brighter detail to add to depth perception.
#7. mossy, Jolla1, "Rose sun shadow"
Again too small image, detail is lost. I like the way slanting light paints the flower texture (which are tulips btw. and not a roses, :) nitpick) Ethereal and capturing image.
#8. robthebold, OnePlusX/SFOS, "Sunlight filtered through faux stained glass"
This kind of capture would merit more from a direct frontal representation, the slanted angle makes the picture a bit restless. The sun through the coloured glass is nice detail. Background would be better with more bokeh.
#9. mihsun, Z3C, "Cat photo"
The cat is a treasure, posing here looking through slit in the curtains. lots of detail in the room but a bit distracting, for example the digital clock draws eye too much. The mid-gray areas are too grainy for my taste.
#10. Macros, Nokia 808, "Local train station"
Nice framing of the open sky with aeroplane traces adding detail. Good diffraction pattern in the sun's shadow side.
I have to admit there are lots of good images; I am so torn between choises!
However, I'll select #4. saponga, Asus Zenfone 2, "In movement, while driving"

Shows that knowledge about flowers is not a strong side.
A bit embarrasing.
